the need for server restarts

Recommended Posts

so with the possibly most annoying thing i can think of about dayz, server restarts.

will the server's ever growing hunger for frequent restarts ever stop?

as far as i remember, back in good old arma 2, it was neccessery to restart servers every few hours due to a memory leak which would otherwise lead to a crash.

there is hope this memory leak might eventually meet it's fix after all these moons?

or is there any other reason why server restarts always have to happen in the most awkward moments.

How do you know they are more frequent. Most servers I join restart every 2-4 hours.

Ours appears to be working fine. It could be true, sometimes a random restart can happen. It could be a small error that forces it to restart. I am not able to see those logs in private about system errors.

This would be the server companies not the renting owners issue most likely. I think you can request a faster restart like 2 hrs, or 4 hrs by default.

Hope that helps, otherwise the server(s) has issues.

Always seemed odd to me...how delicious would it be if they didn't have to restart at all?! I.e. no memory leaks and the loot re-spawn system works like a dream. I hope that's the end-game they're shooting for because yes, the frequent restarts are very annoying. :)

What we need is an automatic information system that the server will restart in 3 (or whatever) minutes. This sudden "crash" without any warning is just extremely annoying!

I'm 100% sure the ultimate goal (the best/unreachable/utopia scenario) is to provide a server architecture that does not require restarting at all. The outcome will probably be that servers won't need restarting unless the software/hardware on the machine collapses, not due to faulty design.

Most private shards I played on already do that. I.e. provide 1h, 5min and 1min notifications prior to scheduled restarts. Of course unscheduled crashes screw that all up. :)

Once proper persistence and loot respawning is functioning correctly, and server architecture is developed and stable enough, I expect that we will see the scenario where servers will only restart every 24 hours (or even longer hopefully - each wednesday?).

If and when we ever get to that stage is another matter though.

Some of it isn't server restarts at all, some of it is server crashes. Per the latest changelog notes:

Known issues:
- Animals spin in one place.
- Animals die randomly.
- Animal navigation.
- Animal animations are playing at a wrong resolution.
- You can drive v3s while knocked out.
- Only 1 person can get on back cargo of v3s.
- Random desync.
- Random client crashes.
- Random server crashes.

Then what would we ever do, if windows and mac O/s decided to put messages in their systems saying We are sorry your hardware failed, or this piece of software is glitching.

Please stand by as we SHUT DOWN.... hahahaha Fools!

i know that. and i am not talking about crashes. i thought i made that as clear as possible.

let's say a friend told me he found and left this epic rare item somewhere, and i can't get there in time before server restarts - those are the moments i'd like to pull my hairs out.

more frequent? well most servers i join restart few times a day, but i want to know for how much longer this wil be still neccessery.

i'd be satisfied with just any dev response :)
