WTF is going on?

Recommended Posts

Hi All,

I'm seriously confused as to what is going on right now, Moreso I believe it's down to me but regardless what the hell is going on?

I've been a big player of the mod putting in day(z) of time and I jumped at the chance when the standalone arrived in alpha, Now before I say any more.. I DO understand this game is in alpha and as such will be very buggy.

Anyway, Today I came back after a little gap *(Due to zombie behaviour) and start up on the beach as usual. No zombies around at all.. I see a construction site and a few of the long barns. I run full sprint to them knowing i'm okay as i see absolutely nothing around, Search the construction site and find ZERO items.. not one! I quickly move to the barns in crouch knowing Zeds could be anywhere nearby, As I get to the gap in the wire fence i spot one, just one. staring away from me at the stone barn. I quickly get into crawl and continue through the first wooden barn glancing through the gaps to see if i was causing any alert. Nothing. I keep moving still hoping for any loot at all and onto the second barn still in crawl. I take the side door out of the right side and then crawl along the grass up to the big door of the second barn.

Knowing i'm a MASSIVE distance (100Ft Easily) away from the zed i get up into crouch. I'm only just able to see maybe a hand-sized area of the zed. (i'm still 100 feet away and out of sight).I take ONE STEP in crouch and this thing comes full sprint at me! what the fuck?!?! I raise my fists as it appears and one punch it to the ground with only taking a single hit. "My clothes feel damp" GREAT! I'm bleeding! I turn and full sprint into a field zigzagging the trees, using free look i spin the camera to see the zed getting up and about 100 feet again.. STILL following me! I can't believe this! I'm quickly gaining ground and the zed is falling back. I duck round behind a house but keep moving in crouch and dodge another few houses... Sitting in the corner finally away from it i start to patch myself up. I think I've alerted another one as I hear shreiking from my left. I prepare my fists.. and who would you guess? the EXACT SAME ZED. I swing I run I alert more.. I swing.. I run. I pass out. "You're Dead" oh thanks!

I loved the mod and I had no problem navigating around zeds and basic survival even without any teammates. I'm all for taking any tips or pointers as it has been a while since I played this but it does seem a regular occurrence that I'm faced with unstoppable zeds and NO LOOT. I'm stuck. I WANT to love this game like I did the mod but the standalone just isn't doing it. Things like this happen every single spawn and it's becoming tiresome.

Sorry for the long read.

I know the frustration, but let me just explain how I play as a new spawn.

a) Get away from the coast fast, you can run 2-3 towns interior sometimes before starving to death.

b) There is no loot on the coast because thats where all the spawn points are right now, it's just a fact.

c) Zombies aren't really coded well right now, so they are just place holders. As annoying as they are, you can sprint and jump the short fences to get rid of them.

Hope that helps, once you get interior you can find food and start to build up your character. If you stay on the coast you are likely to starve and be sniped.

That first hour can be rough no doubt and during daytime it does seem that the zeeks have a huge aggro and are marathon runners. I look at it akin to a blood hound who can track for miles. If you think of a zeek as a super-predator one who's very survival is tracking warm blooded animals I think it is fitting that they have heightened hearing and smell. With that being said food can be a bit sparse along the coast I would suggest going inland more. Also red berry bushes and apple trees are great to just get you up and going when everything has been picked over.

Outrun or outsmart the zombies, for now you can not stealth around them.  Once you get used to them they are more just annoying, not really an obstacle to stop you playing.  The short fences are a good tip.  Buildings and doors are back to being bugged, but line of sight works still too to lose them.  Zig zag and turn around buildings and trees and walls when running away, it isn't hard to outrun them until you find a melee to deal with them properly.  As for what melee, I recommend a Fire Axe, Splitting Axe, Sledge Hammer, Pick Axe, Garden Hoe, Brass Knuckles, in that order of preference.  Until you have one of those, evade by running away.

Hatchets and ice axes work like a treat too. They're two shot weapons against zombies, with only a bit less reach than a splitting axe or sledgehammer.

Zombies will follow you for a long way. Think of them like a heat seeking missile, once they're onto you they'll never stop (even if they can't see you). People have noticed them following from as far as Elektro to Berezino.

If you don't have a good weapon, a few things you can try include:

  1. Luring them into a house and then shutting the door and trapping them inside. This works some of the time, when it doesn't work it's because they just glitch through the door. Smaller houses are best bet for trying this.
  2. Zombie bowling (run down a steep hill, often they'll simply fall to their deaths).
  3. Pretend you're a bull fighter and simply side step them. If you're familiar with the angular way that zombies move, you can actually have a bunch around you and run ahead and loot and do things you need to do and when they come near simply run by them or sidestep around them. When you're comfortable you'll learn that, in the way the currently move, it's actually REALLY easy to avoid getting hit by them.

Thanks for the tips i'll definitely give them a try, I went a massive bit inland on a playthrough before all the way to stary but with no luck finding weapons it wasn't long before I got killed. I did go inland again just now and headed towards the centre. Found a Mosin in the top of a barn but tried to skip down the stairs a bit, fell off the stairs and the screen turned black "You are Dead" goddammit! time to retry, I'll use the small fence technique, Thanks

what ya could do is try going on a server thats at night with 0 people your chances of loot are better. then you can loot up and head inland. you might still see zombies but if you can find a meelee weapon due to lack of people you should be ok

Don't join persistent servers - they don't spawn gear (unless it changed recently).
