Makeshift Shelters in the woods

Recommended Posts

How about makeshift shelters that can be destroyed when not in use...to shade the survivor since it rains every minute now in DayZ standalone.

Checked but it seems, this is not on the list of suggestions.. maybe the devs can think about this in future updates.... 8-)

The problem with Improvised Shelters is whether they'd be persistent like tents are, what you suggest may solve this but I could still imagine there being over a dozen of these things everywhere set up by new spawns and veterans alike, which I'd imagine would bog servers down quite a bit before server restart.

HOWEVER, if it was implemented, I'd personally would like to see two types that can be crafted. A large one like you suggest, which can hold near enough 2 or 3 people, it cant stow any items and if it can it is NOT persistent, it simply stores a small amount of gear to make room in your back. And a smaller one, enough to fit a single person, but you must interact with it in order to actually "sleep" and/or "rest" inside of it as well stow a little bit of gear, looking very much like this in it's basic framework:

I like the idea of crafted shelters, maybe cabin logs. But they should be really hard to craft (cabin logs) and for me both could be persistent.

There should be different craftable items with different lifetimes.

A shelter made out of ashwoodsticks, a rope and maybe a few pelts and chopped sticks. Lifetime 6 days.

There has to be an option to reset the lifetime. For example after a few days you have to repair your shelter with a few chopped sticks and this resets the lifetime and you get 6 days again.

You can store basic gear in it maybe 28 slots or something like that.

And if its hard enoug to craft it wont get spammed all over the map.

With this system there are several options of housing and if its faster and easier to craft it dissapears earlier.

I think it makes much more sense than searching the whole map for a camping tent to build up a little camp in the woods. I wouldn´t do that. I would grab what I can and search a safe place to start up with a small shelter to be safe.

@Draco and @imun, both of your ideas are great and hope the devs team can somehow implement them in DayZ Standalone... 8-)

As for my suggestion, i was thinking along the line that the "makeshift shelters" once crafted could be persistent like the tents which is a pain to find (for me as a lone wolf).

It also can be made difficult to craft but could easily be destroyed by any survivor or hordes of zeds .... which can be another source of grief that can make DayZ more interesting.

I would also like the idea of it having a degrading system maybe about 3 - 5 days without any interaction should despawn the crafted shelter to ease the server load...

I love this idea! Especially the degrading system is such a good mechanic that would be quite realistic, be in line with the gameplay and (most important for me) would prevent the agglomeration of dozens of player homes/bases throughout the map as it's happening in DayZ Epoch mod. In the mod I really hate it how there are unused bases and vehicles everywhere not even talking about the so unrealistic and immersion breaking floating heli platforms every base seems to pile up into the air.

So, great and immersive idea, I'm all up for it!

Yes I think the current persistance system works like that. If you put an backpack on the ground it stays there an exact amount of time till it disapears.

But for buildings it would look great if you come to a rotten and half broken playerbase. Some crafted half rotten shelters, a broken cooking tripod and rusty crap on the floor ...and maybe a bit useful stuff :)

And it can be a source of kindling in the woods when destroyed (if no loot) by a survivor or new spawns does not have an axe yet.... A lot of possibilities..... 8-)

Another video on makeshift shelters in the woods as it seems more authentic and goes well with DayZ's survival theme than looking/finding tents to set up camp.

What do you think???

I really hope that the devs have plans to add makeshift shelters in crafting for more things to do in the woods..... 8-)

i was just about asking for this when this thread showed up.. it would be cool to craft something out of sticks and leather.

Everytime I go camping I build a debris shelter and laugh manically at my cold friends in their tents.  I support this fully.  Especially since I just finished making my full Natural Leather clothes, ghillie hood/gunwrap, and pigpack.  I look like a gd boss while im trying not to throw up eating zucchini and not drink my entire jerry can of water.

Yeah man! sticks and leathers goes well together for a makeshift tent. I honestly think this will be a great addition in the crafting recipes for a Survival game.
