datguyash 0 Posted January 19, 2015 Hey all, I have only played DayZ for around 3-4 days now, I am loving it!Is there any such thing as the best backpack in-game? How do you open tins of food? Axe, or a knife? What's the best way to kill a zombie without shooting them? I am always feeling cold what's the best way to warm up? Good clothes? Or is the coldness something to do with weather? When it's raining I always get wet, how do I dry off? If a server has 50 players online do you think every city would have a couple of players around?Sorry for so many questions just getting used to the game, thank you! eno 1049 Posted January 19, 2015 (edited) 1) The first one you get. I think the one with the biggest volume is the "hunters" but the favourite I think is the smerch vest with backpack.2) Any pointed object. As you can imagine, the larger weapons make you spill more food. I have seen 2 can openers in over 100 hours of playing so grab a screwdriver until you can craft an improvised knife. Improvised rock knife only takes one slot and can do everything you need.3) Fire Axe (1 hit) or splitting axe (2 hits)... I think those are the favourite melee weapons for that task4) Adding clothes as soon as possible helps- warm clothing = getting warmer. Sprinting around longer distances helps too but then you will get hungry / thirsty faster. Staying inside or crafting fires can also help over time. 5) You'll dry off over time inside and I believe being near a fire will help too. Find rain gear to wear- boonie hats also help as do some other garments. 6) I was on a server with about 30 people near one of the biggest cities and didn't see anyone for 2 hours. I've been on a server with 10 people and seen 3 people in 20 minutes... it really is random. There is a "survivor concentration" thread that helps show the hotbeds of activity- most trafficked areas are Elektro, Cherno and Berezino in terms of cities and any military location on the dayzdb map can be expected to be highly contested territory. Thanks dude! Also does bike helmets give better protection? Thanks.
eno 1049 Posted January 20, 2015 Any helmet gives you a degree of protection that is better than a hat or boonie. Now, degrees of protection with every type of helmet... you could probably find that in the wiki but I'm told even that is pretty outdated. It would likely get you in the ballpark. VERY helpful to ward off unconsciousness with single blows to the head etc. I think there is a predictable increase in protection as you move from skateboard helmets up through to Gorka military helmets. Motorcycle helmets are probably up there in ranking since I see many people wearing them- particularly bandits but that's just me stereotyping. Thing about bandits is they know all the best things to wear. Common and effective items are easy to acquire and still work well.
Kirov (DayZ) 585 Posted January 20, 2015 Hey all, I have only played DayZ for around 3-4 days now, I am loving it!Is there any such thing as the best backpack in-game? How do you open tins of food? When it's raining I always get wet, how do I dry off? If a server has 50 players online do you think every city would have a couple of players around?Sorry for so many questions just getting used to the game, thank you! 1. The biggest one is the mountain backpack (35 slots), but it's huge as an item, doesn't allow to look back on 1pp servers and even the green one is still plainly visible. Most people prefer the hunting backpack (30 slots), with better camo and look-around-ability. Both are military loot and you won't find them in regular houses. My preferred backpack is called an improvised leather backpack and you must kill and skin a boar to get it. Combine a wild boar pelt with a rope and sticks to get 25 slots in a very flat, nice and inconspicuous backpack. 2. Anything will do, even baseball bats, but the spill is bigger. Smaller pointy things like screwdrivers and knives are better but their condition deteroriates quickly. Simply use your axe once you get hold of it. A can opener is nice, but you can live without it. 3. Firefighter axe. Put some paint on it. Some say a splitting axe is less visible, I guess I'll give it a try. 4. Pay attention to clothing and its condition. Ruined gives no protection. Sprinting warms you up a bit. When I'm a freshie, I go for raincoats or wool coats, warm caps, gloves, wellies, no less than "worn". Make campfires as needed to dry off and warm up. 5. As ENO says, you dry off with time and much faster close to a fire. A raincoat or gorka military jacket offer full protection against rain. Gorka is the best jacket in the game IMHO - warm, rainproof, camo colour, 6 slots. Military loot, especially tents. 6. You never know. As somebody put it - on high pop servers people flock to cities, on low-pop ones they loot military bases etc. That's just a most general rule of thumb. I read many stories when 2 only guys on a server actually met at some point, and in a less-than-obvious place to that. As it occurred to me after my recent adventure in Berezino - there is always a non-zero chance for absolutely anything possible to happen to you. Which is why I'm not surprised at all that you're getting to love dayz. :) 7. Bike helmets offer better melee protection, as welding masks, etc. intuitive stuff. Military helmets give better ballistic protection, although a headshot still ore often than not sends you back on the coast. HtH and have fun in Chernarus!
