Traps: Trip-lines, land-mines, and claymores...

Recommended Posts

Hi.

Here are some ideas I did a search for and didn't find.

1. Land mines (pressure plate triggered explosives)

2.* Claymore (Directed positional explosive wired to door or tripwire)

3. Tripwires (Attached to grenade, claymore, etc.)

4.** Gun traps (Attached to door via rope or wire or tripwire)

(*) Formula could be something as simple as 2 sharpened sticks (as per arrow crafting) combined with a wire or rope (more visible) could be placed perpendicular in a softer soil surface about 3 meters across maximum.  Alternatively, a wire/rope could be attached to a closed door handle, and then a grenade (claymore, etc.) attached directly to that wire/rope.

(**) Formula could be something like 3 normal sticks and duck-tape to create a makeshift stand (or alternatively use a tripod) that could be attached to a door handle, or a preset tripwire. At that point you could place the fiftieth shotgun you found on the stand, load it with ammo, and walk out the back door locking it behind you...

Any differing methods or crafting ideas that would seem more probable/practical are welcome if they approximate the same end goal.

Any thoughts?

BTW - Tripwire should also live up to it's name. Even when not attached to anything else, people running or sprinting into them without jumping them should fall over.

Hmmmmmm........ I feel like this would be abused by every single troll in the DayZ realm, especially in the cities like Cherno, Elektro, etc

Landmines and claymores (or the Russian MON-50 equivalent) I'd love to see at some point - having viable but rare explosive traps for defending your base or planting alongside the road would be awesome.

Tripwires and gun traps I'm not too sure about - many of them can be quite complex and they seem far too situational to be practical in DayZ.

For crafted traps I'd prefer things like molotov cocktails or IEDs, or improvising things like bear traps (which are confirmed.) Nothing extreme like Fallout's baseball pitching machine traps.

Wooden stakes could only go into soft ground. But... I'd say for sake of reducing stress on the game engine, the first trip would break the wire leaving 'maybe' only one or both of the sharpened sticks. In the case of explosives being attached, nothing is left. Also, we could have something like only running or sprinting causes the player to fall forward. Crouch walking, crouch running, and normal walking would not cause you to trip. Additionally, crouch walking (ie - slowest sneaking speed

) would not even trigger the wire.

At the very least tripwire, or a simple wire attached to a door, could be connected to a grenade or MON-50 explosive. Not complicated at all. Could even just make it so that wire could be simply be inventory stack attached to grenades or claymore alternatives (maybe increasing inventory size one slot), and these could be attached to very specific points in the environment. Grenades with attached wire would still function normally.

Only if they are EXTREMELY rare.

As Sacha said. These thing needs to be EXTREAMLY rare. Maybe even harder to find than a let's say Aug or Smersh vest. Okay maybe not that rare but you get the point ;)

Yet these things are relatively common far more common than an aug.

Of corse they are. But the Aug can't explode and get spammed in areas with a lot of people in, that will cause kiddies to rage quit ;)

Explosives in general in DayZ needs to be rare since its a survival MMO . Not a fps

I suppose thats true.

Due to how the game works and how everything must be found I don't envision mines or explosives ever being a big problem. The map is gigantic, there are limited resources and lastly players overly cautious anyway so they would avoid them.

Thats a better reason to add more explosives. Or even random mine fields. This isn't an FPS. FPS games don't bother putting that much detail such as mines.

Depends on the game. I've been doing a runthrough of the Far Cry series (from the original, to Xbox's Instincts/Evolution, to 2, to 3, and finally 4) and pretty much all of them have well placed minefields at some portion during the game, and they've killed me a surprisingly large number of times.

But yeah - land mines will be great for DayZ. These things are rather large and (somewhat) easy to see - they seem to act more as area denial weapons than "kill as many as possible" objects (just as mines are in real life) and where these are usable would be mainly for anti vehicle combat. Granted I'd still like to see claymores/MON-50s and IEDs but these are nice to have.

While I basically like the idea I'm rly afraid of what would happen if you implement them. I would like most traps like guns wired next to doors etc to srsly hurt, but not kill you as long as you aren't injured already. Or at least let the tactical vest be an ensurance. The traps that kill instantly like actual mines or wired grenades should be rediculusly rare.

Otherwise I would expect military locations or the area around those to be almost impossible to loot :/ without server restards the number of those traps is going to increase rapidly. On servers with high population there are many shootouts, try to run and get to cover in a mine field

I actually think traps will need to be relatively easy to find or craft.

They're the only thing that will make barricading a building viable without unrealistic barricade durability.

Without the worry of a grenade or shotgun going off as soon as they open the door any newspawn could crowbar their way into a groups base while the owners were afk.

True, but tbh a base in one of the big cities is rather pointless due to the fact that they are all relatively near to the spawn areas. Even if your trap kills a greedy bambi, nobody is stoping him from respawning and walk into that base again :/

But you definetly have a point. How about those two ideas:

1 - a "dinner bell"-trap, basically an alarm that draws every zombies attention within a 1000m. Have fun defending yourself with your back against a baricaded wall. That should at least stop the fresh spawns

2 - gun traps won't kill you if you have at least a worn tac vest and you cant deploy more than a single trap within a 2m distance. That should keep the trolling to a reasonable amount. Wired grenades or mines however still have a chance to kill you instantly, but are rky rare unlike the other stuff

With the recently announced 'hardcore mode' (much longer spawn timers) that's going to be much less of an issue, at least on the servers where i play.

The zombie attracting trap idea is very good, hopefully the z count will get high enough that this will be really effective.

There should probably be some way of disabling craftable traps like tripwires but the tools required to do so should only be available to a well equipped burglar.

True I forget abou the upcoming hardcore servers. That would certainly be handy when it comes to bases. I would probably still prefer the middle-of-nowhere approach so I can hide a car there.

I wonder if you will ever be able to put a set up a trap in a car
