pillock 850 Posted January 11, 2015 Explore! Check all the buildings and try to get to know your immediate vicinity before you move on - that way you'll recognise it better if you ever stumble across the same place in future. Take your time and just try stuff out. If I'm somewhere unfamiliar (this applies to the real world as well), I usually head for high ground to get a better view of the wider area and the lie of the land. It's probably more enjoyable, too, if you avoid using 3rd-party maps on the internet to navigate, as it takes away from the experience of discovering new places.
creature 1189 Posted January 11, 2015 My tip? Enjoy this time not knowing what you're doing. Once you have the game figured out, you'll be back asking what to do after you're geared up.

I have no clue where to go, were to find things and such. Some helpful tips would be nice! :D Thank you.Enjoy that "new" feeling that you currently have. If you play often, it won't last long. But just focus on surviving! After getting killed by a zombie or two you will start to learn the hang of it! I want to tell you about other players but you will soon experience it for yourself... Ah what the hell.Players in this game do not care about you. They don't want to survive with you. All they want to do is take what you have found. That's it. Treat everyone as if they are hostile, but that doesn't mean that you still can't have a friendly conversation.Remember what I just said above. It will get you farther than others have. This game is dangerous. But not because of the zombies, but the people. Stay Safe.
BeaverProductions 441 Posted January 11, 2015 (edited) Here are a few of my tips for a new player. *Get off the coast as soon as possible. You will have a greater chance of finding food away from the coast.*Get yourself an Axe, Machete, knife (or make a stone knife) and put it in your hands and go up to a bush and when the [Chop Kindling] icon pops up, press F. You should now either have 3 sticks at your feet or in your pack (if you have room). Leg breaking is a common bug in DayZ and you can make a splint with the stick and a rag or bandage. You can also look at the ground in a forest and [search for Kindling] if you don't have an axe/machete. Morphine does the same job and only takes up 1 slot*You can drink from ponds. You can also drink from water wells*Keep eating and drinking until you see "Energised, Hydrated, Healthy" icons next to your character when you press Tab. These icons need to be bright green, not dark green. You can continue eating when you are Yellow Stuffed, but stop on Orange Stuffed icon*You can press Tab to pick up objects in your vicinity (see the left hand window when you press tab near an object*Keep your most valuable possessions in your backpack. Zombies usually attack you from the front as you try and hit them and can destroy your Jacket. Putting valuable items like rags in your trousers is also a bad idea as you may break your leg and ruin everything in your trousers. Put them in your backpack or spread rags around on your clothes so you have some in your jacket, trousers and backpack.*You can use a Sewing Kit/Leather Repair Kit to stop bleeding and repair clothes/bags rtc. Bandanas, Tshirts, Hoodies can all be torn into rags.*Use melee items to open cans if you don't have a can opener*Dont use the aiming dot to melee zombies with. Each weapon has its own swinging arc you have to learn. The dot is for gun aiming and picking up items.*To kill zombies, strafe/circle around them while hitting them. Dont stand still. Punching/hitting them in the head will knock them out and you can run away. If you have trouble, run into a house and lock the zombie inside or keep running and you will eventually lose them. Dont kill zombies with a gun as they can respawn and it will alert other players that you are near.*Build a fire if you are too cold (Sticks and rag/book/bandage to make the fireplace kit, then add more sticks or chop down a tree for a log and put it on the fire, then light with matches). Or jump in a pond if you are overheating.*Some of the better melee weapons are Fireaxe (kills Zeds in 1 hit), Splitting Axe , Sledgehammer (2 hits), Hoe, Pickaxe. Things like the crowbar, wrench, pitchfork are not great melee weapons. The fire extinguisher is a great PVP melee weapon.*Jogging instead of running will burn less calories and water. Its advisable to jog as much as possible until you have a good supply of food/water*When you spawn, if you find some wire and you have some sticks and a knife/machete, make a rabbit snare and place it in a wooded area. Loot the nearest town then come back after 10-20 minutes and hopefully you will have a rabbit you can skin and cook on a fire. If you find some seeds, all you need is a shovel, pickaxe or hoe to dig the ground and plant the seeds. for every seed you plant you will get 13 tomatoes in 10-15 minutes (you need to water them with a water bottle or grow in the rain). You can reduce the growing time by adding "Garden Lime" before you plant the seed. If you find a plastic bottle, you can cut it with knife/machete and put it in the water at the coast to trap fish. again fillet them and cook on the fire. You can also fish in ponds, but you need more materials to do so.*If you find a rope and a burlap sack, you can craft a backpack. Add sticks to make it a 20 slot bag. Find a Wild Boar, kill it (run at it head on and melee it before it turns and runs - might take a few attempts) and skin it (with knife/machete) you can use its skin to upgrade to a 25 slot, and coolest backpack in the game. Kill a deer and you can make the skin into a Leather backpack. You will also get steaks form animals you kill you can cook on your fire. Be careful and keep an eye on the food as it burns really quickly after its cooked (about 15 mins after you put it ont he fire). Stoves/Gas Canisters dont work properly yet.*Pistols and Ammo often spawn on the very top roof (accessible by ladder) of the firestations.*Saline Bags + IV Start Kit can replenish blood if your screen is losing colour. Unfortunately you will need someone to administer it to you, you cant do it yourself Edited January 11, 2015 by Beav
nillie 30 Posted January 12, 2015 (edited) One thing i would like to add : Before leaving the coast for safer inland havens, make sure to get a raincoat or two ! They keep you from getting damped/wet and as a result, they keep you from dying of hypothermia. In theory, you can always dry yourself up and get warm near a fire, but this takes time and people can see them from some distance, giving away your position. Also, fires dont work when its raining, so sometimes you will need to build one inside a hangar or a deer stand somewhere, which can mean leaving the safety of the woods ! They seem to be buggy inside regular houses as well. You can find raincoats as regular loot in houses or cars, but they are most common on stranded boats a long the coastline. One big question tho :Is skinning and coocking actually working tho in 0.52. ?How long does it take to skin an animal? I have tried it mutiple times with pristine gear, and it seems to go on forever...it looks like the action is bugged, and i never get meat or skins in return. I have also never seen steaks or skins as loot on other players. Also, does the cooking pot-gas stove combo work? I know for a fact that the cooking tripod does nothing. Makes it pretty hard to stay out fo towns atm if you ask me.Is fishing in ponds working correctly? Problem with ponds or the sea, is that they are often close to cities and therefor close to danger. So far i have been playing what seems to be the default playing style : Gearing up like rambo, or getting killed trying. But i would much rather live off the land and survive with cooking and hunting. I just cant seem to get it work tho :S Edited January 12, 2015 by nillie

However, I've had a lot of actions failing to complete in .52 which causes me to need to "cancel current action" and try again, often after switching to a different action in between attempts. One time I simply could not craft a splint without a full restart of the game. C'est la vie. I am yet to try the full "living off the land" experience (with maybe just a pickaxe to get my initial stone and hence stone knife) but it's a role playing experience I am REALLY looking forward to trying very soon :-)
Lord Daem 15 Posted January 12, 2015 Most important tip, trust no-one
Sorath (DayZ) 6 Posted January 18, 2015 Here is my advice. First pick servers that are low populated and stick to servers with the least amount of players. This will make your life easier. Once you get weapons and ammo and are better supplied you can move over to more populated servers. The reason I suggest this is because no one and I mean no one can be trusted. The more players are on a server the more likely you are to get killed. Playing on low populated servers means you get hit some military instillation with out getting popped by enemy players and that is where you will find better gear and what not. When you spawn find a weapon asap. Ax or Fire Ax are your best choice but sledge hammer or Pick Ax will work. Once you have this you just have to learn how to time the Zombies so you can reduce how often your hit. Also don't use fire arms on Zombies trust me there not worth it. As stated head inland as quickly as you can. I generally hang out in land long enough to find food, water, and some sort of weapon. If I cant find anything I make my way inland. The further inland you get on a low populated to no populated server the better your chance are finding stuff. Us http://dayzdb.com/ as your map. At some point try and figure out where you are and then start setting tasks as for where you want to go. I generally start moving inland and head towards military bases. As a rule thumb I am super paranoid. When I get on populated servers I will scope out things before I move in. If I see a player I do not hesitate to kill them. I have no compassion, no mercy and no tolerance for other players. In fact I very much have a deep seeded hatred of all players. The more heavily armed a player is the more I am likely to stalk that person and kill them. Let me let you in on a secret one that will give you an edge over almost every one in the game. Know your surroundings. Learn the cities like back your hands. Learn the cities will help if you need to exit a building with out being scene by enemy players. Learn where best loot spots are because generally that's where they are headed. Unless your discovered and they know where your at you have the upper hand so take your time and pick the right time to engage. Some times you will come across heavily armed groups and you may only be able to kill one and quickly leave the area and preposition your self and wait and stalk them again unless they have your location and know where you are you have the upper hand. If they do spot you and come for you stay close to buildings. Knowing your surroundings can help you escape. Once you escape you can turn around and go back after them. In my opinion this game isn't like most FPS where you have to be the greatest shooter in the world to kill other players even heavily armed players. It's a matter of knowing your surroundings. Knowing what other players want. It's matter of knowing which buildings are best to draw them for an ambush. It's about being tactically smart. Being a great shot helps. Most of the time your going run across single players which are easy to deal with as long as you take your time. Again pick your moment that you feel confident that you can make the kill and not miss. When you see player and you know the area well you can probably figure out where they are headed and move head and set up a prime kill position. Be smart, know your surroundings, and take your time. That is best advice I can give. I have learn this stuff over the last few weeks. I was going to quiet because I was frustrated but now I learned and got smart. I haven't died in a week and now really well armed. I have taken down entire groups of players before by knowing my surroundings, taking my time, and just being smart. hekp 223 Posted January 18, 2015 (edited) As much as it might be tempting, try not using online maps. As much as you'll probably want to know the "good" locations it's far better experience when you discover them on your own.I still remember how surprised i was when i accidently discovered myshkino mil. base just by wandering the forests... the flashbacks i got when i entered the village of Pusta, the creeps i got after finding blairwitch easter egg just because I got lost a few minutes earlier..Using the online map will just shorten the awesome feeling of unknown.
