I know what you mean, but it does feel a bit artificial to me with the current spawn balance.

I think it's all about exploring a different way to play the game. I'm not judging others who want to play PvP, after all it's a big map and knowing there are heavily armed types out there adds a little frisson to the whole affair.

Of course you could have the same layout as I have above and fit in a sawn off moison or shotgun. You could also just carry an unaltered gun in your hands.

With the new lead dev coming from a hunting game background, you'd hope there is move in that sort of direction.

OP gets my beans, I love his approach to the game and it's this type of player I enjoy killing the most. Only 3 times have I been blessed with the gilt edged opportunity to kill a cratfer, when I see the corpse up close with the homemade backpack, the bow and arrows and all that crafty crafter tackle, I swear blind it brings a tear to my eye. A real moment to savour. I'm welling up now, woman pass me a tissue.

I wish there were more players like this who put so much effort into the game and who had such a clear vision and ethos in regards to their approach to DayZ, then again the pleasure of killing them would diminish if it became too much of a common occurrence, all hail the crafters and may I have the pleasure of killing another one bloody soon.

I admire your shameless reveling in the gourmet killer you are, kudos sir. Glad this venue lets you get these needs out in a safe environment.

I tip my hat to you Sir, for it is it the gun-ho types like yourself that provides the edge to living within the Chernarus environment.

At present the stealth element of the game is only just developing, but as it does so does my experience at dealing with this sort of gameplay. I am getting better with the bow and while it's obviously no match in a toe to toe battle on the street with someone armed with military grade weaponry my intention is to never be caught in such a situation, rather I will follow and bide my time and strike should it be necessary.

In fact earlier today I stalked a similar player who had initially given his position away by firing openly at zombies in Lopatino. Although several of the zombies that he had noised up had decided to attack me, my arrow quickly and quietly took them down, allowing me to continue to pursue this person without them realising I was there. I even had several clear shots at him while he was looting although I decided against it as I am still not entirely comfortable with my bow skills. If I had taken a shot however, I feel the silence of my weapon combined with my cover it would have been difficult to tell exactly where I was positioned. The advantage also being that if I had fired it would not have attracted any nearby zombies.

It's obviously not my intention to go around indiscriminately killing people, but with practice and as the game develops I feel that given time I will soon be as much of a threat to those who feel secure because they have a gun (as you certainly seem to do), as they feel they are to me.

Exciting times ahead.. :D

Quoted from the DevBlog

"For now we will be adding new items and crafting possibilities including primitive stone blade and guts, next step will be to add bones, torch and alternative way to ignite the fire without matches.

 "

The thing is, stone blades are neither primitive, nor easy to make. Metal replaces stone as the tool-medium of choice partially because it was easier to work with, not because it was better. Even during the Bronze Age (Bronze is actually "better" [harder, stronger, holds an edge better] than Iron), knapped-then-polished flint tools like axes and knives were still in use for tasks requiring REALLY sharp edges. They had specialized knappers who would make these tools.

Obsidian and glass (which obsidian is, just a natural form of it), is actually rather sharp, some of the sharpest edges in nature, and it took a lot of work to make those edges you see on Stone Age tools and weapons.  I've made some (admittedly, rather crappy) arrowheads from glass bottle bottoms, and while they were undoubtedly effective (punched all the way through a straw-and-plastic target, it took me about a month to make three, including learning how to flint-knapp, gathering/making tools, and finding suitable pieces of glass.

This is a video comparing the difference (HINT: there is effectively none) between a knapped obsidian arrowhead and a steel broadhead.

However, once you know how to knapp, you never need to worry about arrowheads, knives, or even axes, if the glass is thick enough.

If they decided to introduce obsidian then arrow heads, spears, axes, etc would be fairly easy to craft. Interestingly, for the game, obsidian becomes blunt fairly quickly so could fit in well with the deterioration of loot.

Rather than gearing up and heading for the nearest city, I've been crafting my own equipment and feeding myself in the forests. This is the layout I'm using just now...

Good job man. I have started playing this way after reading your post. Threw away my mosin and military gear.

It is incredible how the experience transforms.

I now have bow and 5 arrows and ashwood stick which will become fishing pole once I find the hook. I also carry self made backpack, axe and shovel, canteens and some other knick-knacks.

Game is so much better and finnaly I have a goal at all times worthy of pursue. Get to this lake, get this material, go to that hill, get the pelts, prepare the neccesities for camp, find light and heavier clothes.

And most importantly - I actually have to be carefull where I go. I cannot waltz into Zelenogorsk anymore like Rambo. I sneak around and carefully look for ashwood trees, chop them down get the sticks and get the hell out of there.

I am still in doubt whether to claim the greenhouses in Zeleno. I want to plant tomatoes. There are several greenhouses next to the military base.

I will most likely claim them but will leave all my stuff at the camp. Travel light.

Concerning weapons, I do carry the magnum and some bullets. And I will look for an SKS and stash it in my camp. If anyone unfriendly ventures into my camp I need to protect myself.

Thanks bro!

I'm glad you've enjoyed the change of pace. You are right, you approach towns with much less bravado once you no longer have an rifle or machine gun. Out of interest, with the bow, how good are you with taking down animals? When I first started I wasted about 20 arrows (I had to stop half way through and craft more!) just trying to take a cow down. I'm better now, mind, but it was a steep learning curve.

I understand the reason for carrying the magnum, and for maybe stashing a rifle near where you are based, but I hope that crafting and the survivalist element of the game will develop to the point that even those "safety nets" are not necessary.

You are playing with no guns whatsoever as I understand. Good luck with that. I will rely on loud gunshots from my magnum and shouting to scare the bandits. I hope the SKS stays unused.I feel safe with my magnum, although let's be honest. If an attacker is packing any kind of rifle, I will most likely soon be sent to the eternal hunting grounds.

Concerning the bow, I killed one cow so far. It was interesting, exactly how I imagine an unskilled city boy would go about it in the wilderness.

I shot all of my 3 arrows towards the unlucky cow and missed. Then I went to retrieve the arrows and found only one. On the next try I missed the cow again and lost the last arrow as well.

So the cow lived and I had to go look for feathers once more.

Then I learned I can load up to 5 arrows on the bow. Hardest part for me was getting close enough to land the arrow on the target.

Once they start running it is hello goodbye.

Heh, well sort of, I do have a sneaky Derringer in my loot. It'll not much damage, but it's small and my fairly basic insurance policy.

The hardest part for me, apart from getting used to how the bow works, was not knowing if you'd hit the animal.

One annoying thing about the arrows is that you can't get them back from zombies you should, which surely is half the point of using them.

What do you think about vests? Too military? They look like hunting clothes to me no matter what the description sayz so I wear one.

UPDATE

Today I found a new persistent server to settle on. It has constantly over 40 people online (max 50) so I am looking forward to some interesting situations.

I made my camp in the middle of the map. I have several key points close by, such as a small lake and good hunting grounds. It is a fairly hidden spot yet close to some big towns.

My hunting has improved much today and I have killed 2 bucks. I still waste 3-4 arrows before I get the kill though.

I have planted a rabbit trap in the clearing and hope it works. On my scavanging run I found couple more wire kits. If the traps prove usefull it should be a nice contribution in meat.

Biggest obstacle so far is rain and cold weather. I cannot start the fire during rain. The meat takes ages to cook in the cold weather, yesterday it took about 30 minutes and they burn relatively quick after being done!

Concerning safety, I forfeit my original plan to store an SKS in my camp. When I was collecting feathers I found a repeater and found out it used the same ammo as my Magnum. So I took the repeater and stashed it aways close to camp. Hope it stays stashed.

Looking forward to seeing if the camp is still there today.
