First game, and some questions

I've just started my first game yesterday, and spent a few hours gearing up, but I can't seem to find ammunition for the derringer or crossbow I found. . . Everyone says "NW airfield has all the gear" but the trick is getting there. Anyone know a way to pinpoint your position on the map? 

 

Also, after about three hours of gameplay, I did not run into one player or zombie. . . no entities. Is this normal, or was the server glitched?

Really appreciate it.

Crossbow ammo is kinda rare.And often you only find one or two bolts. Its better to go for another weapon. The derringer uses .45 cal ammo.You can find it at fire stations, police stations and lots of other buildings. Forget the NW airfield. Try finding your way first and learning how to survive without high end gear.
