boiling water and catching rain

Recommended Posts

acquiring clean water outside the big cities

the last few updates of dayz introduced the possibility of living out in the woods. This meant hunting and catching wild-life for food. While this does a good job of providing enough food for one player to survive outside of the big urban environments, the ways of gaining fresh and clean water are not very numerous and require you to perform the catching rain action or find a pond to drink from. with several diseases coming to the standalone you will need to drink clean water to stay healthy. and clean water (or any other form of drinkable liquid) isn't very abundant in the wild.

catching rain

this will be done by crafting a "rain catching stand" which can be used in similar ways to a fireplace kit. requiring you to place a water container (water bottle, canteen) inside of the rain catching stand. This will then start catching rain in the same way you would do using rain catching action.

boiling water

this will be done by placing a cooking pot into a fireplace kit and pouring water into the cooking pot. This will sterilize the water and thus making it safe to drink.

Im pretty much 100% sure boiling water to clean it will be included as it was like that in the mod. There was a chance to get an infection unless you used an empty tin can to boil up your water.

I like the  idea of a bigger rain catching device, instead of running round chasing droplets with an open bottle lol. Maybe 2 types, 1 like the fireplace kit that fills abottle much quicker, then a ststic one for basebuilding that will collect it in a tarp and allow a large supply to be kept at camp.....then banditos can try to poison it, you could have to keep checking to make sure it hasn't gone stagnant and has to be drained :)

Great Idea, I was just wondering why on earth i could just set the bottle down in the rain and it fills up and i can come back for it later or something lol. your idea is much more sane.

Instead of crafting a specialized "Rain Catching stand", why not just use a bucket? Crafting not required. Multiple other applications.

I agree with this maybe it shouldn't be too elaborate. How about buckets and maybe those funnels for fuelling cars. You could drag the funnel to the empty bottle and "create rain catcher"....then same as with a bottle now but takes a lot less time :)

1. because the rain catching stand will have a larger area that it can catch rain with. If you've ever set a bucket in the pouring rain it will take more than a few hours before you filled it completely.       maybe the bucket can be added but it will just not fill as quickly as the rain catching stand.

2. survival is all about being presented opportunities and using them in the most efficient way possible, maybe if you can't find a bucket you can use the use the improvised rain catching stand.

3. its more of an item you can have around your base of operations, like you can have multiple around your camp fire.

4. because buckets will spawn naturally they have a potential for filling up with no intervening from players.

5. buckets will be overpowered if they would spawn naturally, because if them (presumably) spawning in very abundant industrial areas they will be very frequent and therefore way to easy to find       and use for massive amounts (3-4 water bottles) of water. and they will stop fresh spawns from worrying about thirst about 15 minutes after they've spawned.

6. for almost the same reason fishing rods don't spawn naturally and must be crafted.

+1, All we need now are metal poles, Buckets and plastic sheets :-D

ive have uploaded my "masterpiece" paint image to show the basic idea i had. and i think that if this gets implemented that it shouldn't become too over powered as in finding a complete set-up for catching rain in one building. i am just trying to follow the path the developers are taking in making the game not too easy, like when they added craft able fishing rods instead of a complete set of fishing equipment. it sort of "boosts" the survivor feel  :)

For a bigger version to keep at camp I agree it should be hard to craft and require a few materials like, tarp, and some lengths of wood...maybe rope aswell. I feel there should be a generic "easier" way to just fill bottles quickly (like the funnel) You could use buckets to collect rainwater then fill a bottle from them, or use them to bring water to your camp if its not rained in a while. Empty the bucket into your big tarp rain collecter style. But if the bucket has anything in it, to move it you should have to hold it in your hands.

We could find camps whith people running buckets of water around, or use the bucket and funnel to fill a car radiator, or transport fuel, but with carrying it it has drawbacks over a jerry can for fuel or canteen for water :)

i am open for new suggestions for this idea as long as it doesn't come in a complete package, here's an updated idea.

sticks + ducktape = watercatcher frame

this is a place-able much like the fireplace kit is and is used in the same way as i described before.

putting the funnel in the inventory of the water catcher frame will then give you a fully functional water catcher.

Alternatively, you can drag the funnel over a canteen or water bottle giving you the "catch some rain" option in your inventory filling the water container to 100%, given it is raining at that moment.

  :)

Buckets wouldnt always be standing up outside, you could find it only inside factories, or laying on their side or upside down outside.

if we would add physics to a bucket and then expect the game engine to regocnize when to add water to it and when not, we could just aswell deliberately add bugs to the game. it will be way to buggy and glitchy.

You have to remember that this is the same game team that made Arma 3, which is a great game

Having empty cans be created by consuming canned food would be very helpful in this, and the clutter they would cause could be easily remedied.

Cans could simply despawn after ten minutes if they are not touched.

Of course, you can boil water in a Styrofoam cup, too...

i like the idea of spawning an empty can when you consumed canned food, that is indeed very helpful

i have full confidence in that the dev team can develop physics to a bucket, but to add a reasonable hard to program feature into the game at this stage will most certainly produce bugs and frustration

First of all, you already can cath rain with your canteen (I don't know if you know)

Secondly, you didn't search this topic at all, only searching for collecting rain water gave me more than 6 results which post exactly the same...

I see that you are new but maybe you search before you post, like you are supposed to do ;)

i am indeed new to the dayz forums or any forum for that matter, i just felt like i wanted to share the idea :)

I'm a bit late to this party but did search it and this was one that popped up.

I figured that cooking pot might be a good way to catch rain water too... not sure if devs have ever mentioned this type of thing was on the drawing board?
