Toxic air

In an apocalypse where God knows what went on, there would be areas unexplorable without some sort of air filter. As per the previous posts of gas mask usage, I further bring up a newish idea. There's should be some kind of toxic cloud that settled in some areas and can be blown away only to resettle somewhere else. This cloud would require at the least one of those white dust filters to navigate, but your character would still get hurt from prolonged exposure. A gas mask could be used for complete protection.

Air inside of buildings would still be breathable if the doors are shut, and survivors could seek refuge until it passes.

Your char could have a stat message such as "it's hard to breathe" and then "my lungs burn".

Feel free to criticize or shoot me down, it's just a cool idea I had.

I don't know whether it's realistic or not, but I like it :beans:

The gas masks or air filters can't protect you if they're ruined, and if they're damaged or badly damaged, they only protect you for a certain amount of time

I've always wanted a system similar to Metro in different sections of the map so I am supportive of it.  In Namalsk they used to have a pretty good/similar storm system.

Maybe we could have player-created death zones? Some of those giant cisterns in the industrial areas look like they might have some nasty stuff in them...

From the idea that "This is the apocalypse yada yada yada" this argument would require us knowing the actual lore behind DayZ and what caused the apocalypse, which we don't know other than fan-based speculations.

 

On the other hand, this would give us a reason for the gas mask and respirator masks other than to look cool/like a badass.

I like the idea, and it'd make some pretty cool scenarios, like what if a Zed breaks your mask in the middle of one of these storm cloud things.

Cover Tisy military base [when it's added] in VX or some area denial gas, would be nice to have a 'high tier' high risk area like that.

That's a really good idea, but irl VX kills if it even touches you, and can go through most gas masks

Oh, I forgot to mention what I mentioned on the other threads I suggested this, add Noddy suits [those CBRN suits] to the game, in an Irl zombie apocalypse the military would be dusting off loads of old ones from the stores etc, as well as civilian agencies that use em like a chernarussian FEMA possibly.

Well gas masks must be in for a reason, other than to make you target practice.  I would hope there will be some areas inaccessible unless you are wearing one.

Tear gas grenades or Mace would be a consistent reason for wearing gas masks.

Also, gas masks offer some mild level of protection from a zombie biting your face off if it got close enough, and protect you from spittle-transmitted airborne diseases, I would think

Finally, they look cool.

We don't need to implement giant floating clouds of toxic gas to make gas masks useful. Although toxic clouds of gas might be cool. I would see them as more reasonably located inside certain factories due to abandonment than hovering outside. Sort of against the idea though myself.

If there were any of those areas, where u could only go to them with a gas mask i think that if imagine u dont have the mask, u would start like coughing and having an irregular breathe maybe? like u have in metro... But as someone said before to implement a gas cloud that just moves around we would need a real story to know what happened in Chernaurus to fall into a zombie apocalipse... (i dont know if having a moveable cloud is even possible though with thouse debuffs associated to it)
