LaurenDanger 100 Posted July 1, 2012 I got back from two weeks holiday and I felt like a newbie again. All the old tricks and tactics seemed to have changed for how I played, and I had two quick, five minute sessions where zombies had me bleeding and running and of course, I died. I was frustrated, I was wondering why I was still playing the mod, I was thinking about a new game for my PC or just sitting on the couch with my iPad playing Angry Birds or some such thing. But I kept trying. On my third run, I slowed down even more, I used a few new tactics, I adapted, and I am still alive! Was it easy? No. Did I want to run and find a gun and turn zombies into flower fertiliser? Of course! But I didn't, and with some planning, it got better. Here's some advice. Double tap the shift. It changes the run to a walk. Slowing down means less noise, and more time to watch out for zombies and players.Another thing I tried was being up hill from buildings. Looking around from a high point means spotting zombies and planning a route to walk to the building. And if things go wrong, the hill is a good fall back point. Zig zag and strafe up the hill to get the zombies moving slower and you can lose them in the trees once you double shift to turn the walk back into a run. Finally, my best piece of advice is watch YouTube videos! This will help you learn about which buildings you can enter, how zombies react to you, and just give you general tips. DayZ mod is all you need to search for, and the newer the video, the better the learning for the current version. And some of them are just fun to watch! Special mentions for Sidestrafe and Scoutfreak1 though there are many good ones.So even people with experience get frustrated with the mod, but we know the rewards of persistence, and and I hope that a few tips will keep you in the fight to survive. It is worth it!
chaz gelf 15 Posted July 1, 2012 Amen to that, fellow survivor! I died quite quickly the first few times I played, but I just kept trying, using my previous knowledge to help me in my next life. Right now I'm doing good on my current life, got some medical supplies and food, and I'm ready and willing to help any players that come my way. Unfortunately I haven't found any blood packs yet, I'll have to look more for those. But yes, in a game like this, perseverance is very much key!
LaurenDanger 100 Posted July 2, 2012 Persevere! That's the new battle cry. I should load up gear, run along the coast and shout that on direct comms as I give out beans and cans of coke to the newbies. Then I shall die as a sniper kills us all, and hope someone comes along and does the same for me. :)
bathtubdiver 1 Posted July 2, 2012 Players should really cooperate more! Yesterday I had just started a new life and had nothing on me but a hatechet. It was dark night and I saw another player sneeking around a house and called out "friendly" signaling shortly with my flashlight. He replied "how do I turn on the flash light?". I explained him how to do it and we entered the building where we found a Winchester. I didn't get any round, but he did. Two zombies came in which I killed with the hatchet. I bled, bandaged myself, and what does he do? Shoot me in the face...
Nasty Wet Smear 4 Posted July 2, 2012 No matter what your playstyle, keep at it! It's well worth it.

I helped a player a while back who had attracted a bit too much zombie attention. I managed to finish off the last of the bloody things, but used up my ammunition. We seemed to be getting along fine, but when I said I was out of ammunition, he shot me in the face. Very similar situation. I share your pain!I still refuse to fire first on a player, but now I just avoid everyone because yes, some people are weird. And not in e charming, cute weird way, but the "I shot a man in Reno, just to watch him die" kind of way.
Elias (DayZ) 57 Posted July 2, 2012 I agree with OP; if something doesn't work, try a different approach. You'll have to adapt in this game, if you want to survive. Take it slow. Make a plan. Trust no one and live by the golden rules. That's what's kept me alive for months.(1st golden rule = do unto others as you would have them do unto you)(2nd golden rule = don't get attached to your gear, because you will lose it)

I'd like to add a part to the making a an, though I am sure you know it. Just to ensure readers know it, let's praise the "Have an escape route" portion of planning! If you're going to get into trouble, and you will, you need to know where to run to try and get out of it. without breaking a bone or looping back into the horde you're trying to escape. ;)
Orphen (DayZ) 14 Posted July 2, 2012 I would say for new people to be persistant and continue trying to make friends and find a group to play with. It makes surviving alot easier and death is alot more tolerable! Your friends can pick up your gear and set you back on the path to success. You will get shot in the face alot. There's alot of paranoia now that side chat is gone, but hang in there, not everyone shoots on sight! Just remember: try not to get up in someones face until you know they're friendly! Even friendlies might fire if you sneak up on them!
