d.walker43 196 Posted November 9, 2014 Hi guys, Recently ive been trying to hunt in dayZ and I have some ideas that would help the system benefit. I am a hunter in real life, so I know a lot about the subject, and have some ideas that are realistic and would improve the hunting system as a whole. 1: animal trails. Lets say your walking in the woods, and you come upon what looks like the plants have been padded down, and obviously something or multiple somethings have walked through here. animals in real life make trails through the woods like this, and following the trail likely will lead you to a burrow, or where a deer or something is laying down. 2: sounds. pretty simple, if an animal is walking near you, you hear its footsteps. if you shoot it, it runs, and when it falls you could hear the thump. Pretty self explanatory. 3: more types of animals. right now there is pretty much deer, pigs, and occasionally a cow or something. I think there needs to be far more variation. There needs to be different types of animals, such as big game, small game, waterfowl, etc. Also, some aggressive animals, such as wolves and cougars. Would definently love to see ducks, geese, different fish variants, coyotes, wolves, along with all the stuff we have now obviously. 4: damage/blood loss. Ill use a deer as an example. In real life, the area you want to hit is right behind the front leg/shoulder, as this where the heart and lungs are. I think if you shoot an animal in the correct spot, the blood loss, time it takes for it to die, and distance it runs before it dies should be effected. Would make it very realistic. This leads to my next point. 5: tracking and bloods trails. When an animal (or people or zombies) is wounded, it bleeds and leaves a blood trail, just like in real life. If you get a good shot on it, it will probably drop pretty quickly. if it isn't a very good shot, it will bleed and you will have to find the blood and follow the trail. The worse the shot, the fainter/less blood there will be. also could leave tracks (footprints), to help assist in tracking as well. 6: animals effected by weather, time, etc. By this, I mean animals behave as they would in real life. If it is raining/storming, the animals would be more bedded down in forests, laying low and not moving around much. If its cold, they would probably be doing the same thing. Certain animals such as raccoons, wolves, etc. would be a bit more active at night, while others, such as squirrels, would be more active during the daytime. Also fits in with animals being more common by food sources and water sources, such as creeks, ponds, fields, etc. This would mean you could set up a pile of corn or something by your camp, to attempt to bait in some deer. This is illegal to do in real life, but obviously in an apocalyptic situation anything goes. 7: blinds and stands. I know that there are some random deer stands scattered throughout the map, but I think you should have the ability to make your own, or find some. In a sporting goods store, you could find say a tree stand, and go set it up in the woods by your camp to hunt out of. Once base building is implemented, you could build your own duck/goose blind and set it up in a field or by a lake. Make it realistic, you would have to know where to place it if the animals followed realistic movement and flight paths according to temp, time, place, etc. Also, make them as aware of their surroundings as they are in real life. If you and your blind are not camo-ed enough, the ducks and/or geese will obviously see you and fly away. Same with deer stands. This leads to my next and final point. 8: animals FAR more observant of surroundings. In real life, if you even move around too much a deer will hear you immediately and run away. If hunting for waterfowl, if your blind and you are not camo-ed enough then the birds will see you and fly away. Right now, In game they sometimes wont even run away when you shoot at them. This needs to be made far more realistic, one of the biggest parts of hunting any animal is stealth. Well, that's all I have for now. I know its a lot, I tried to divide it up a little to make it easier. Any thoughts, comments, questions, additional ideas, anything is appreciated. Thanks for your time.
UltimateGentleman 355 Posted November 9, 2014 -snip-I think most of these suggestions are planned anyway, not sure about trakcs or blood trails though it might be a bit too taxing on the engine and servers to have every animal making tracks constantly. I'd like to see animals adapting to the landscape in the cold, going in barns and things for shelter since they mostly don't have to fear humans. Blood loss/eventual death needs to happen they shouldn't have a health system where it's like 3 shots to kill them, 1 shot to the heart area like you said should have them falling down in a couple of minutes or less, shots elsewhere a lot longer.Limping would also be cool. Not strictly hunting related but imagine you could shoot pigs in the legs maybe with a .22 so they limp then catch them, take them to your base somehow and breed them after fixing them up. That would be awesome.Screw your militaristic killing each other bullshit I want to be a farmer :P

Thanks for your time.the suggestions about the "trails" and such cant be added in currently. the engine that dayz currently runs on cant handle it. BUT when they start to use that different engine they've been speaking of, definitely the tracking suggestions will be possible!
LoveAffair 329 Posted December 15, 2014 Can we please add these guys to the game already..
TheHermit (DayZ) 22 Posted December 15, 2014 I love these kind of in depth ideas, but I would rather see them on a mod or a complete separate focused game based on pure wilderness survival. As long as we have zombies, military bases, food and guns/ammo everywhere, all of the survival stuff becomes mere personal RP and pretense, if you choose to play that way... With the imitations of this game, stuff like Forest, etc... I think we are heading in the direction to have some excellent spin-offs and real simulation survival. I mean I would love to happen to find groups of people walking around seriously trying to stay alive, with very detailed options and real necessity involved. I want the feeling that I am actually dying, literally on my knees looking for bugs if I have to LOL
VasatorAK 3 Posted January 13, 2015 I would like to see more animals up north. Right now I have to go down to Lopatino to find deer and wild boar. The areas around Sinistock, Toploniki, Zaprundo, and Polisovo are completely absent of any animals. The forests farther north than that should be teeming with life.
