Icons / Debug Monitor

Recommended Posts

I do think that DayZ could benefit from a well made stat system using icons or the old school debug monitor from the DayZ mod. I think the side icons (temperature, hunger, thirst, etc.) should be added. A few new ones could be how wet you are, dizziness, etc.

Also, some may argue this removes the 'realistic factor' from the game. The truth is, in real life, you always know if you are thirsty or hungry, dizzy, cold, etc. (unless you have some weird disease or are really out of it [maybe this could be a part of dayz too if you want to get really creative]). They will simply be a nicer looking version of the blocks of text that display in your inventory. Plus, it helps bring back that old school nostalgic DayZ feel from 2012.

But this is already being displayed in the game with messages / statusmessages. The Debug-Monitor wouldn't make this any better, as you wouldn't know that you're "147,23 Hungry".

The way I feel about it is that the existing statuses are sufficient and that a Debug-Monitor wouldn't help the situation.

Didn't the dev team state that this message system is just a placeholder until they have a good idea + time to work it out?

There is a display of your characters status. It is just not out in the open like it was in the mod. Hit Tab on your keyboard and look to the right of your characters head in the inventory window ... ta da there ya go. Was that really that hard to hit one button to see your characters status? You really need all this crap littered around your screen?

I'm kinda' tired of all of the "status button/text message" apologists on this forum.

  • A few icons will not break immersion. Add icons that not only tell you your current status but also the rate that your status is being affected.
    • Example: If I am getting colder I need to know how rapidly this is happening. It is not being communicated very well with the text messages...
  • Friendly hex markers will not break immersion. What will break immersion is prosopagnosia. It is not realistic that someone can just change their clothes, run up to me and look exactly like one of my friends.
  • Get rid of all hidden stats. Not knowing what is going on with your character and suddenly dying WILL break immersion. And it happens quite often with the sub-par UI DayZ has.

Or, at least, add it as a server option for private shards. Modding this crap yourself will never be as good as if BIS implemented the mechanics directly.

I remember reading on a pinned discussion thread on Reddit that Rocket stated he was OK with these status messages and they wouldn't be changed. If I can find the source I will post it here. It was very disappointing to read... I don't know if it 100% true so I will search for the source.

Personally, I really don't want any extra HUD elements and I like the status messages in the bottom left instead of the hunger, thirst, blood etc. meters. If anything I'd like the hip-fire crosshair to be removed, or at least on hardcore. I can guarantee you however, once modding and private hives are fully implemented they'll be de-bug monitors, the old HUD and all that on servers. And if they were to add it into the base game I'd really hope they'd be an option to toggle what HUD elements you had on as I and probably many other DayZ players, like the lack of HUD for the immersion and difficulty.
