Is there a way to read books/maps? Is there a use for wrenches/other tools currently?

Maps have never been useful for me and neither have books, why are they here? Same with wrenches and screwdrivers....

Maps have a purpose if you're not willing to "cheat" and use an external map. Books can be read cover-to-cover in their entirety believe it or not.

 

Wrenches, screwdrivers, pliers, and other tools will have a use at some point. Many. many things in DayZ Standalone did not have a purpose when they were originally conceived. The game is still in development, don't forget that.

Put them in your hotbar and have them in your hands to use them.

Apart from the obvious (reading it!) you can rip pages out of books to start a fire or write on them...

Books and maps has been said, put it in your hotbar to read/view.  I use ingame maps now and have stopped using things like the DayZDB map (ingame at least), books would be a good 'time waster' for when you're recovering blood or waiting on your group in a 'secure' location.  Wrench and hammer has no function other than maybe as a weak melee weapon right now, though it's been said recently that more functionality is coming 'soon'TM for tools/weapons, including the pipe wrench.
