IronCross 78 Posted August 23, 2014 http://www.gq.com/news-politics/newsmakers/201409/the-last-true-hermit Great read, incredible story. I'm fascinated by his ability to survive the cold.

Zombie Milkman 167 Posted August 23, 2014 My first guess would be spectrum disorder of some type, they mentioned aspergers... I never met him so couldn't say, but fits the profile. Non violent, let the poor guy live away from people. I don't know how a judge can impose "socilaization" on him. With the surprising # of holes around us at any given moment, just let him live alone, and in peace.
rybec 339 Posted August 23, 2014 There was a family that lived in the woods for quite a few years and didn't know World War 2 or the Cold war even happened.

Its a sad story, perhaps if he interacted with locals who would offer him some food and clothing, rather than scare the shit out if them.Makes you wonder how did humans ever survive in all corners of this earth, before the technology
Schweinsteiger 107 Posted August 24, 2014 Thanks for the very interesting story IronCross. It was a great read. They should have left him alone, to go back into the woods and live out his life in peace and quiet. The judge is a dickhead. I bet people would have put out food for him if he was allowed to go back into the quiet of the woods. Now they've forced him into living like the rest of us. Cruel and unusual punishment in my opinion.
Bororm 1156 Posted August 25, 2014 He's sorta a dick, sounds like he robbed a lot of people. Would you like to know some homeless guy was entering your house all the time, taking stuff? There's a lot of homeless around where I live, if they started coming and taking my stuff I'd definitely be upset.
Whyherro123 2283 Posted August 25, 2014 (edited) He kind of was a bit of a dick. Breaking into people's homes for DECADES? You can learn to grow your own food, build your own log cabin (which would be much more efficient than a tent), and build your own tools in shorter time. He sounds like he has some sort of issues, mentally or socially. And, if you are going to live in the woods, do it on public land! (the story touches on this). There isn't much the government can do to you on there, except for poaching charges, and they have to find you to do that. In the middle of summer, Maine has so much vegetable food available, he really shouldn't have needed to raid people's houses for food. Cattail, Blueberry, cranberry, liliypad tubers, dock, raspberry, blackberry, plantains, etc. Take it and preserve it. And in the Fall, there is even more! Hazelnuts, acorns, apples, pine nuts. And he could've trapped game and fished all year long. Nope, he wanted those steaks and candy. Edited August 25, 2014 by Whyherro123
Rags! 1966 Posted August 25, 2014 There was a family that lived in the woods for quite a few years and didn't know World War 2 or the Cold war even happened. There are lots of Americans in the public school system that don't know these events happened, either.
