Is fishing/gathering stones using pickaxe + rock in stable?

I finally found a pickaxe and a fishing hook to use to get a rock to fix my firefighter axe, then use the axe to get a bendy stick, then craft a fishing pole. Long plan ahead. Anyway, I was whacking away at a rock before it hit me that rock gathering might not be in stable. And then it hit me that fishing might not be in stable either.

Press f or scroll your middle mouse button, while looking at the rock and you will get text "mine rock" or something like that. Then its mouse click and you will get "i found something" text. If you have enough room it will automatically be placed in your inventory if not, it will be in your vicinity.

Same procedure goes for wood chopping, looking for worms etc.

You do not need to press space bar to arm your tool.

Any rock that is on the ground. Not cliff rock.

Boulders are what you need. Run up to them and press F when you get the option.
