i thougth that this would be a helpfull little thing, if you get shot you can see where you got hit and how bad it is, you can check your inventory and see your status on the lower left of the screen, if you dont bandage it`ll get worse and worse. It would be like Red Orchestra 2.

 

Here for example, our character got hit once by a mosin on his right leg and broke a bone, and got shot 3 times by a pistol, in the lung, and on both of his legs, hes heavily damaged. The darker the area is, the worse the damage is.

this image would pop up on the side of your screen when you get hit, it would stay there for a few seconds and then would fade away, or it would only pop up like 10 seconds after you get hit.

You can aways check your health status by checking your inventory, it would be on the lower left.

pretty spiffy! Though I would only like it to pop up when you open your inventory.

 

and maybe it shouldn't show what's been hit inside your body, just external things since you don't really have X-Ray vision in real life, and I'm sure people who have been shot aren't worried about what organ it hit. That's for the doctors to worry about.

Yes. Short of actually visually representing this, which the tech doesnt support,

I'm not a fan. I enjoy damage indicators as they are now. They tell me if I need to use a bandage or morphine.

If we are going for realistic, no. You cant do that in real life without cutting yourself open.

 

If we are going for cool game feature, no. I've seen it in too many games.

 

Its cool, but i dont think it would fit in DayZ

Yes to getting a better damage indication system, but along with that should be an improved medical system... see the other dozen threads for more on that.

I don't like this HUD stuff and thats why I voted no. If anything you should look down to see where you are damaged (which would require the addition of some wounds/gore). I can see this for the character/inventory screen though.

B..but if you were shot in real life, you don't think you'd be able to feel where you were shot? That's pretty realistic if you ask me. Can help you see where you were shot from

There is a shit ton of variables in this equation.

 

First off, lets take the SKS or Mosin into account.

 

You get shot center mass, you are fucking dead, no arguing there.

 

You get shot with a .22 (Depending on how far away and how close the gun was) its going to bounce around in your body and rip everything up.

 

Chances are, if you are shot in real life, you pass out from blood loss and shock within minutes.

 

Pretty realistic, right? How about things like the .45. A 45 would blow a hole the size of your fist out the back of your body even if it didnt have self defence / hollow point rounds.

Is there a certain point you are trying to make? Or are you just flippy flopping on your own ideas.

You shouldn't have this, but you SHOULD be able to check yourself for wounds through a manual animation in order to gauge what kind of medical aid you'll need to receive.

I'm saying that showing you where you got shot IS realistic because you would know where you got shot in real life, and your reply was a bunch of facts about bullet damage that I already know. So maybe we got our points confused, what exactly was your point?

No, not like the thing in the screen, as little hud as possible. As far as I'm concerned they could even remove aiming reticule, at least on hardcore.

I never got shot myself but I read that sometimes with adrenaline flowing, people didn't recognize wounds. I have a friend who got stabbed 1cm next to the heart in a fight and he didn't realize until the fight was over and the adrenaline level was lowering, which was a few minutes after the fight (he survived).

 

You shouldn't have this, but you SHOULD be able to check yourself for wounds through a manual animation in order to gauge what kind of medical aid you'll need to receive.

 

I liked this idea, so my approch to keep it "realistic" is an action to check wounds. When activated, this action should give you information about wounds in the lower left message indicator
"I have a [minor/big] [shot/cut/etc] wound [bodypart where the wound is]".

If the player doesn't check, this message should show up a few minutes after the wound was "created". If it's possible to determine, whether a character is in a (gun)fight at the moment, it would be even nicer if those messages only show up, after the fight is over (when adrenaline level lowers).

This idea can also be realized with the "visual indicator" as suggested, but the message indicator is already part of the game and therefore easier to implement ;) Maybe you should change the poll into, do you want a (more precise) damage indicator.

The only thing that should change about the damage indication system is directional awareness. a slight indicator from the direction your hit, this should also apply to missed gunshots

My point is, either you want it to be realistic, or you don't. I'm just poking at the idea of you wanting the best of both worlds, which doesn't work out.

some people like to play devil's advocate. They have their own opinions, but they try and get other people to express ideas better by asking questions. It is a more constructive thing to do if you aren't 100% one way or the other.

I think that this is realistic... it isn't giving you 'magic info', because if you get shot in the leg, you bloody know that you have been shot in the leg. A map, like the one shown in the thread, of the body with damage tracing would be a good addition to the game.

 

However, to avoid it being annoying, it would have to stay in the menu rather than popping up on screen.

 

p.s. how about as a compromise, the information isn't very detailed if you check it while running, holding something etc., but if you check while sitting down in a 'safe place' (not sure how that would work specifically) then you get a much more detailed analysis. This would be a better balance, because if you are stabbed then you can feel it, but you won't know exactly what's going on until you get somewhere safe and take a look at it.

And where are you getting the assumption I don't want realism in those aspects too? Lots of things in this game can be changedfor realism. Bottom line is that it's still a game. So your whole 'only 2 ways about it' thing doesn't really appy here.

Do you see the issue with your logic now? You are playing both sides. Im just saying it would be much easier to agree with your viewpoint if you picked a side.

 

You want to be able to check where you got shot (If you dont insta-Die) Great

But you have an issue with realistic bullet damage. Not great

You want it to be hyper realistic. Great

Its still a game. Not great

 

This is what im saying. I'm with you on the whole hyper realism thing. It would be awesome for bullet damage to be correct. Would make fighting way more intense and make the game feel like real life. But i think one without the other would be pointless. (Being able to tell where you got shot, and having realistic bullet dammage)

you clearly don't understand suspending disbelief. It isn't about what is realistic in our universe.

 

Day Z is set in our world, so it has to follow all the same rules. The Day Z universe has one key difference: the Zombies. This still means that 'hyper realism', or realism as it is known to anyone with any idea of what survival games are about, is important.

Now you said the the op's idea was unrealistic? (Unless I'm misunderstanding you) and I disagreed, stating why it would be realistic IMO. Now the truth is they can never really replicate real life in dayz. I know the bullets aren't realistic yet, and I'm sure they will be changing that, but as long as the devs are going for realism, a way to tell where you've been shot is a good idea.
