zyryx 14 Posted July 22, 2014 This is a new term to me. What steps are taken to prevent it? I was chasing a guy who took a shot at me. Rushed the room he had retreated to. As I entered the room he went from prone to standing and did not move. Killed him of course. Was this combat logging? At what point does retreating from combat to a safe place and logging out not become "combat logging"?
Elle 562 Posted July 22, 2014 before the logout timer was introduced logout was instantaneous and combat logging was very effective, as in, your adversary would have been gone by the time you got there. as it is now with the logout timer your adversary was still on the server while logging out giving you the opportunity to kill him. so from the dev perspective the timer is the "for the moment" fix but from the player perspective I am not sure what steps you could take to prevent this other than exactly what you did (good call by the way and yes sounds like combat logging to me). when I feel that I have evaded my enemies successfully I will spend at least another 10 mins on the server, shaky hands and all, and continue making my way farther from the incident area while checking my six for pursuit. after those 10 mins or so I will find a nice big tree and poke around with my inventory to calm my nerves and kill a few more mins for the sake of random encounters (zeds et al..) then I log off and go smoke a cigarette or two. zyryx 14 Posted July 22, 2014 So as a general rule 10 minutes? How long is the log out timer?
comikz 218 Posted July 22, 2014 The log out timer is roughly 30 to 35 seconds in length, so make sure to log off in a SAFE area. In your situation that was indeed Combat Logging, and a good amount of time to wait is 10 minutes, because CL's are lame.
Elle 562 Posted July 22, 2014 So as a general rule 10 minutes? How long is the log out timer?10 mins or more is what I use, the timer is only 30 seconds but a lot can happen in those 30 seconds so I tend to take excessive time to make sure I am "safe". it also allows my pursuers the opportunity to continue looking but if I feel "safe" after 10 mins or so I'm gone. TomatoSupra 207 Posted July 22, 2014 I love when people combat log by me. Gives me a free headshot, and teaches them a lesson. I'm all for that idea.
Chroma 61 Posted July 22, 2014 ... I will find a nice big tree and poke around with my inventory to calm my nerves ...Strangely enough this is what calms me too...I'm a total loot whore though! Resorting inventory relaxes me :)
Dawgstyl 51 Posted July 22, 2014 I met a player last nigh that logged in to a high loot zone(server hopper) and I said I was friendly but he pulled out his gun and I took cover before he could fire at me (my gun still on my back). I then watched him run in to a building and watching the player list I see some one log off so I rush in and killed him(death to server hoppers) and in doing so I hit pay dirt. He had 2 Hi-Cap vest and more SKS ammo than I could carry. So I took what I could and I hope he will be a bit more friendly in the future and not pull the pussy combat log next time. Cannon76 13 Posted July 23, 2014 I dont know if this case was 100% combat logging. The guy was fleeing from you right? You were pursuing him right? I could easily see this person thinking they had gotten far enough away from you that they thought they could log off successfully. You can't assume he was aware that you were stalking him and so attempted to combat log to save his hide. Now if you tell me he was fleeing and exchanging fire with you the entire time and the engagement was ongoing up to the point where you saw him go into the house and rushed in after him...?...then it was definitely combat logging. Combat logging is the logging out in the middle of an actual firefight to avoid death. As in you initiate combat and things don't end up going as well for you as you thought they would so you puss out and log off. I have been in several firefights where things got hairy, and this game gets your heart racing like no other I play. (one of the reasons I freaking love it.) On several occasions I have had to log out to take a breather. SO if I had an adversary still on the field I wasn't aware of or was not currently engaged with I just combat logged? Bull$hit. Its just not that cut and dry as, "I was chasing him and then he logged off so he combat logged."
Zedertone 378 Posted July 23, 2014 I freaking love getting in a firefight and peaking a corner only to see the guy on his ass.   I love the 30 second timer.
barnabus 1708 Posted July 23, 2014 I try to get at least one, preferably two terrain features away from my last engagement before logging. That does not mean a building or a block, I consider the entire town to be a terrain feature. I keep my head on a swivel and do a "Crazy Ivan" from time to time (caught more than a few following me that way).
