I like the idea of body armor only being storage.

One of the reasons the mod had so much tension and appeal was that the player was always vulnerable regardless of how much time or what equipment he had.

The fully kitted out player with all of the fancy gear and items was just as vulnerable as a fresh spawn. This created so much anxiety in players and having items mitigate damage is a bad move imo atleast for gameplay.

If they do ballistic vest in a realistic way then we would lose this great aspect of the mod and there would be cases of fully kitted out people having an advantage on poorly armed people.

I'm not trying to start a flame war here...but it's hilarious to me how many people are so adamantly against this game being "pvp" oriented and "not a mil-sim" and "not about playing soldier"

...yet none of them show up here to denounce the idea of introduction of military-grade gear into the game.

Fascinating

This wouldn't decrease the "tension" at all. I'd posit that it'd increase it, because if I had spent time finding a rare-ass Ballistic Vest... rare-ass SAPI plate... and rare-ass MOLLE pouches... I wouldn't want to lose it. But acting like "tension" is some sort of monolithic thing for everyone doesn't really have much merit in my book.

If you have expended time/effort/risk to get something, you should have an advantage over someone else who hasn't done so. You can make the argument about any piece of gear in the game. Why should we have .22 LR rifles? It gives you an advantage over an unarmed fresh spawn. See? It's silly... gaining advantages over someone are pillars of what DayZ is.

A freshspawn can still kill a geared player (with ballistic vest) with a headshot... or a Mosin round to the chest... or by a myriad of other ways of killing someone... I mean, you're acting as if these make players invincible.

Yes, it is fascinating. Mostly because people commit to one ideology or another. That's what allows me to be flexible and prudent, because I don't abide by one ideology and am willing to seek compromise.

Whereas people who focus on "realism" or "gameplay" or "mil-sim" or "survival" entirely, often are at odds with themselves in what they are actually saying. Making them hypocrites and they inevitably destroy any semblance of legitimacy in what they say.

It shouldn't do anything until they have a fatigue system to go with it

Just a thought. There are many different ways of carrying your armour. There are modular plate carriers, and there are frag vest/tactical vest combinations.

http://www.cpgear.com/store/vest/canadian_flak_vest.htm

This link is a civilian clone of the currently issued Canadian ballistic vest. The vest is a nylon shell containing soft kevlar armour. There are pouches on the front and back for SAPI plates, as well as a kevlar neck, and optional arm brassards/neck cuff with more armour. There is no storage at all. This is your protective layer. On top of that, you wear your tactical vest. You can wear whatever works for you, be it a chest rig or modular vest.

This is the issued tactical vest. http://www.globalarmysurplus.com/media/catalog/product/cache/1/image/600x600/5e06319eda06f020e43594a9c230972d/7/6/761.jpg Unfortunately it is not modular (a major complaint from the troops), but what it does is contain the armour underneath. If the user is caught in any sort of explosion the tactical vest keeps the armour in place, stopping it from being ripped off the wearer.

This is the same body armour being worn underneath an aftermarket chest rig.

My whole point is that it doesn't need to be a choice between armour or storage. The vests will fit over the armour.

If we abide by "realism", then yes. But some, including myself perhaps (even though I don't think this particular instance is one in which people should be choosing between storage/protection) would argue that it should be one or the other, because of pragmatic gameplay concerns in having the player make a conscious choice with certain pros and cons.

And there's no real precedent in DayZ for being able to wear a vest and a plate carrier/armored whatever.

Would be neat though!

Would be cool if one could reinforce them with rooftiles or other ceramics

Money.

Nice. I love the way harness gear looks with a few pouches hanging off it.

I feel like they wouldn't make a ballistic vest covered in MOLLE real estate for no reason. They could just as easily create a basic body armor set to do the same thing. Especially with the attachable pouch for the SMERSH being confirmed, I feel like they'll do modular MOLLE even if its just in the form of one lootable item like Ballistic Vest Pouches or something.

For practicality I should prrooobably carry it all the time, but I've never been about practicality in this game. If the mood strikes me I'll toss one on, maybe let my buddies test their sidearms on it haha.

I totally understand the gameplay vs realism argument, but there IS somewhat of a precedent. Currently the clothes work in a layering system. I.E., you put on an orange raincoat. It's bit and puffy looking. Then you find yourself a sweet press vest, and the model changes to reflect the vest sitting on top of the coat.

Likewise, the inventory screen is perfectly suited to this. Each pouch would attach like a scope on a gun (or a fishing lure on a hat), and each attachment would have x number of slots.

EPIC PAINT SKILLS GO!!!

Of course, the vest should be limited to a certain number of pouches, though there could be multiple types and sizes of pouch.
