Goodness me, that was bloody amazing.

Here's a little story, it's quite long so feel free to ignore it, but something I found quite enjoyable.

I've given plenty of criticism to Dayz over it's life. The annoying bugs, glitches and so forth, but i've always stuck with it because I know it can probably be good, just based off gameplay videos/channels like MrBlackout and Frankie. Today, it showed me how good it is.

Now, i've only been playing (according to steam) for 50 hours. It's safe to say, i'm not very good. In that 50 hours, i've killed only one other (unarmed) player, my second kill comes later on... I've probably been killed by bandits and other general idiots in excess of 20 or 30 times, plus another 15 or 20 glitch/zombie deaths. Sometimes i've tried to say hello and got shot in the face, other times they found me and owned me without much effort. Any other engagements which i've survived have usually seen me running away with a grey screen and all my gear ruined.

So, I download the update today, and i'm north of the NEAF. Decided to check it out, knowing that it had changed.

In terms of weapons, i've got a crossbow with no bolts, an FNX45 with 23 rounds and no magazine, and a firefighter axe. There was only about 8 people on the server, so I assumed i'd be ok.

WRONG.

I run across to the control tower, which is near a car park (police vehicle present too) and also next to a hanger.

I search the top and find a Mosin. Brilliant! I already have a long range scope and about 60 rounds so I was happy. Just as i'm leaving, i thought i heard some footsteps downstairs.

Prepped the mosin and slowly went down. Didnt see anything on the stairs, and crept down a little further. Decided to check under the stairs and I crapped myself when I saw a guy crouching there. He had an axe on his back and me thought was that he was going to risk axing my head as i ran towards the door.

I said 'hi' but he didnt respond and just looked at me. He then lay down (lol). He didnt speak and I was unsure if he had friends. Didnt want to risk letting him live so shot him in the face.... I felt a bit bad for it, but took comfort in the fact i believed he was gonna ambush me.

I ran outside and to the fence line. One thing about NEAF compared to the previous version: Trees. Lots of them.

So I was on the permiter fence hiding in some bushes. I caught movement on the far side of the field, coming down the hill from the north. Two guys, they looked highly geared and pretty professional. Decided to open fire with my sniper mosin. Missed them both, wasted about 7 rounds and lost sight of them. I knew I should move but decided to stay put.

On a related note, mosin sniping is now amazingly easy. The scope sway, even while standing, is pretty much totally gone, you dont even need to breath hold anymore. I can see this getting nerfed in the future.

About 5 minutes later, i see these same two guys on my far left. They had come from the north to the fence, been shot at by me, and gone west all the way around to the SW entrance to the base.

I think they assumed I had cleared off. I fired another shot and lost them again in trees. They started spraying with M4 fire. A couple of shots came close. I assumed this was a trick to try and force me out of the trees I was in, assuming i would panic and run.

Another 3 or 4 minutes passed, and out of the corner of my eye, I see movement.

I was like a kid at Christmas.

These two guys had come into the base and were now at the back of the warehouse. I was 90 degrees to the right of where they were looking (towards the tower) and about 100m away. I couldnt believe my luck.

Bang. Hit the first guy straight in the chest. He dropped immediately and I assumed he'd died. I opened fire on his friend, I hit him but he ran out of my line of sight and went prone.

About 3 or 4 minutes later, these two morons pop up in near enough the exact same place. I couldnt believe the guy i hit was still alive. Maybe his friend crawled over to help. When prone, I couldnt see them through the grass.

One guy ran to the front of the hangar and the other guy stayed back. The guy at the back then ran forward and I opened fire again just as he started running. Got a chest shot. Then got a moving second chest shot and he went down (again). 3 rounds fired into him now. Was he dead? I didnt have time to check.

The other guy now saw me. He opened fire with a couple of mosin shots but missed. I ran like Usain Bolt, along the tree line, heading east, in the direction of where the control tower would have been pre-patch.

I ran about 250m, and up the slight incline to the side of the runway. (Btw, when my guy walks and not sprints in open ground because the elevation is like 2 degress, I want to punch my computer - this needs fixing).

I spun around and saw the guy trying to flank my forest. He thought he was coming behind my position but actually I'd already ran past and im now behind him. Bang, 300m single shot kill whilst running.

Kekeke ^_^

Ran to his body, looted his ammo. He had a LOT of mosin rounds. I probably took about 100 from him, with maybe 30 or so ruined. The rest of his gear was average.

I was tempted to run away at this point, the server had about 15 people i now, I knew they'd all want to come to NEAF and the gunshots had been prolonged and plentiful...

Still, I wanted to confirm my kill on his friend. It was dangerous to go back, not knowing if he was dead or not, but chanced it. I was delighted when I sneaked over and saw his body.

I ran over to loot and was thrilled to see what I had killed. This moron is either a hopper or a professional bandit with his friend.

Everything was pristine. He had a 1911, a longhorn, two 300 round boxes, an M4 with more mods than I could recognise, two pristine first aid kits, about 80 rounds of mosin ammo, SIX morphine injectors, pristine clothing including an assault vest with 8 slots, etc etc. This clearly took him a long time to acquire. Muwhahahahahaha

Anyway, i'm looting his body, and trying to get his M4 into my hands. (It wouldnt work, have they fixed this?)

Crack, gunfire towards me. Either M4 or AKM shot. Oh shiiiit! After this first crack, about 20 rounds must have been fired at me, probably by at least 2 guys.

I sprint away from the airbase, the adrenaline is going, im panicking thinking all my hard work is for nothing, and these guys keep shooting over and over. I managed to draw the mosin and just fired a random shot in the general direction i was being attacked from.

Another two or three shots rang out, and one of them actually screamed/whistled past me. Never heard this noise before but it was super loud and was obvious it had just missed my head. It made me panic even more by how loud the whistle was. This was Dayz realism at its best.

Luckily, the ground ran down towards a river, so as i ran down it, they lost sight of me.

Got to the river which was in a forest, panic sprinted for a good 5 or 6 minutes, hid by a rock for a minute and logged out... :P

It took a good 5 minutes for me to stop shaking! Never before has a game made me feel this way. I've no idea why either? Is it because there's so much to lose if you screw up, no easy respawns etc? I dont know what it is, but it's bloody addictive, and i'll be back at that airbase later. So from total useless noob, to slightly less usless all in the space of 20 minutes.

Im also delighted to have nailed those two guys, as i dont imagine they were the kind of people who would have said hello and wanted to team up with me.

Bohemia, you're crappy Alpha state and bug filled glitchy game has redeemed itself :P

Only criticism I have is the guy who laid down - that was a judgement call. But then again, you can't expect to find friends or mercy at the airfields. If you'd let him live he may have come back to you or you might have wasted time and then the other 2 guys might have stumbled upon you and it could have gone very differently. Thinking about it that way you probably did all the right things FTW!

Nice story, forgot the AF got changed. I'll have to head up there and find some new firing positions later.
