dallas 5195 Posted June 23, 2014 Actually, the setting of the game is 10 years after the first Zombie outbreak. I think we're much closer to the outbreak, it's just the architecture and vehicles that looks like, it's been ten years since a world ending event, to westerners. jukaga 271 Posted June 23, 2014 This is the kind of zombie population we had to deal with back in the day: I miss it!
MarchHare 184 Posted June 23, 2014 I spent a couple WEEKS watching tips vids, tactics vids and straight up gameplay vids as well as read how to DayZ forum topics before I even downloaded the game.I knew from just a few mins of vids that this is NOT a jump in blind and let the fluffy tutorial take my hand. You die, you learn, you die again. My #1 tip for survival of your first hour is: Spawn, run directly uphill and inland through the forest. Then loot. Then die. Repeat. Grimey Rick 3417 Posted June 23, 2014 I think the real issue is that it's not diificult enough to survive after the first few hours. fix't
skypig 139 Posted June 23, 2014 they're probably mentioned already, didn't read through all the replies, but the first things I do are dump the battery/flashlight, make rags just in case, don't fuck around with zombies and run straight inland.then search sheds, barns and stables for a melee weapon of any kind till I find an axe.then I can search for food and water with no worry about zombies. after that the only hard or dangerous part is other players lol
commanderbash 102 Posted June 23, 2014 I agree that there isn't good difficultly ramp up in DayZ, its static, all the difficulty you have in the first hour is the same difficulty you have after your hundredth, the only difference is your knowledge of the areas and where you can find what you're looking for, once you have buildings/locations mentally marked as weapons, food, meds, etc. then all that's left mentally marking out a path from what you have to what you want. back around its December release is when I picked up the game, I died non-stop for about the first 3 hours, from the videos I've watched and wiki pages I understood how to bandage, high loot was at the airports, and generally how to play the game, but I didn't know the map, what buildings were important, or how to get blood back, it took a lot of scrounging back then to figure out how blood worked, and a lot of searching to know which buildings were worth while, and although a lot of this information is more readily available, but its not given to you, and very little is even "hinted" through the GUI, mostly its all learned from trial and error, or reading published information. and easier starting area would be nice for new players, maybe a pre-map tutorial level for new players to give them a heads up one the health/blood/food/item condition systems and a quick item location and zombie tutorial, fallout did this fine in 2 and 3. plus these kinds of things can add a lot lore to the game as well. MarchmelloMan 16 Posted June 24, 2014 Somehow I have the feeling, 90% of the people just read the title and then go rage. Can't discuss about difficulty in games cause every difficulty isn't high enough for them.. I guess they wouldn't even complain if there is instant death on sight of a zombie.I agree that there isn't good difficultly ramp up in DayZ, its static, all the difficulty you have in the first hour is the same difficulty you have after your hundredth, the only difference is your knowledge of the areas and where you can find what you're looking for, once you have buildings/locations mentally marked as weapons, food, meds, etc. then all that's left mentally marking out a path from what you have to what you want. back around its December release is when I picked up the game, I died non-stop for about the first 3 hours, from the videos I've watched and wiki pages I understood how to bandage, high loot was at the airports, and generally how to play the game, but I didn't know the map, what buildings were important, or how to get blood back, it took a lot of scrounging back then to figure out how blood worked, and a lot of searching to know which buildings were worth while, and although a lot of this information is more readily available, but its not given to you, and very little is even "hinted" through the GUI, mostly its all learned from trial and error, or reading published information. and easier starting area would be nice for new players, maybe a pre-map tutorial level for new players to give them a heads up one the health/blood/food/item condition systems and a quick item location and zombie tutorial, fallout did this fine in 2 and 3. plus these kinds of things can add a lot lore to the game as well. That's exactly what I'm talking about. The ramp of difficulty doesn't really exist at the current stage. I'm not talking about getting stuff and survive as a fresh spawn. I know for myself that it gets really easy and you can be fully stuffed and armed below one hour. Problem is, when you start with the game, it is really difficult to find food, clothes and drinks and orientate yourself. It's like starting on very high difficulty, then after playing hours of the game, it switches to easy mode - concerning survival (foods, drinks, zombies).
