Zombies, how do they work?

So apparently if you use a gun near or in the city to kill a zombie you'll trigger almost endless wave of zombie spawns.

 

I've killed a zombie with a  gun in Rogovo and the endless wave of zombies were spawning after me all the way to Zelonogorsk when I finnaly glitch/outrunned them.

 

(Un)luckly it was always only 1 zombie respawning near me and aggroing.

An SKS round will alert zeds for 1000m around you. And as they can see/travel through walls, they WILL find you.

I have noticed that they seem to be respawning faster and closer than "normal".

From what I can tell

 

Zombies can hear a shot from a radius of around a kilometer or so.

 

The server spam sends the zombie your location, and a raycast-like line of code determines if they are facing you. (in Java, a raycast is just a line that draws outward from an entity, and determines when it hits something, and what to do when it hits.)

 

Hence why zombies can see you from a mile of way. They can't actually "see" you, but rather they just detect you. They ALWAYS know you are there- they just can't  tell if they are  facing you.

 

When they die from a gunshot, they respawn and "remember" the source of the sound. Then they turn to face that location, raycast hits you, and the raycast tells that zombie to attack.

 

Rinse and repeat.

They don't hear from 1000 m let's not exaggerate

But they do respawn in close proximity and are already aggroed. Which the most retarded thing ever. Combine that with "recently" broken melee. And you get a wonderful experience.

Zombies hear every weapon up to 100m, including that silenced 0.22 pistol. That has been tested in last patch, don't know if they have fixed it since. At least I didn't agro whole cherno when I shot zombies with SKS yesterday.

 

Edit. I have also noticed that if zombie spawns 100m from you after you kill it, it will become instantly aggroed

They fixed it again. You can 1 hit a zombie with the fixeaxe no matter where you hit him. This and the still small amount are making the zombies useless again. I think we should keep headshot only melees until there more than 10 zombies per town.

I like it when you get clear of a place, make it up into the woods, find cover, check nothing is tailing you

and suddenly a zombie standing behind you whacks you a body-slam

if a bunch of zombies follows me i strt to run through the woods or down steep hillsides. its soooo funny when a bunch of them mofos falls down and breaks their neck.  :lol:

That's becouse they have such acceleration, that when they start running down the hill they are fast enought to start to fly, and eventually take fall damage.

I like it when you get clear of a place, make it up into the woods, find cover, check nothing is tailing you

and suddenly a zombie standing behind you whacks you a body-slam

 

This is the moment I wish we had the option to turn safety mode on weapon. This gets me so scared that often I waste many bullets shooting at ground/sky in fear.

Zombies ARE dangerous. Just now got some desync and zombie hit me. Insta-ruined my pristine riders jacket and all stuff in it :(

 

This is why I usually now a days shoot zombies in sight

And if that wasn't already a very poor player experience, every once in a while the game will rubber-band you back into the pack of zombies you just managed to shake off by running through a building.

Sure, once they remove insta respawn, walking trough walls and superman like vision, they can make zeds harder to kill.

They do seem to mess about with the zombie respawning quite a lot during the different builds. In the previous build they had it toned down very much, but in this present build it seems it is somewhat closer to that build where firing a gun in a town basically means you ended up with an eternal zombie respawn cycle. I guess to balance out that they are again easier to kill.

I liked that when with 1 shot you had 40 zombies on you. Game then felt like actual zombie survival game.

I did as well. Until navmesh and proper ai is implemented, it did seem like a decent workaround in order to make the game the zombie survival game it ought to be.
