Help with keeping my cool when meeting players?

Recommended Posts

That's the best advice on this whole topic. Emotional states impair you in every way. It's not about not caring and thus acting coldly or dangerously. Rather it's about detaching your emotions from the situation so your logic and reasoning remain clean.

Cpt. Spears ftw.

not necessarily, I mean the strongest instinct we have is the survival instinct, they don't say to soldiers during training 'stop caring about your life' in fact we were told the opposite, nothing focuses the mind better than fear of losing something you care about be it your life, your friends or your gear. it is a powerful source of motivation if harnessed and channelled in a positive and constructive way.

Detaching yourself emotionally is good advice but is more helpful when preparing for loss, it's a coping strategy for when you have lost whatever it was you supposed to not be caring about but do really because you're a human being who values stuff.

logic and reason don't play too much of a role in the first moments of a situation and thinking can be the worst thing you can do, although logical thought  clearly plays a role in the later stages as you formulate a plan of action, initially the best tools we have to help us maintain control and to act in our own best interests is Instinct and experience (which comes from training or practise) and the ability to empty your mind completely and allow those instincts to tap into whatever experience you may have in order to guide you through whatever situation you find yourself in.

Friendly means: "Don't shoot me... so i can shoot you first."

But really... 10 minutes are not enough to declare another player trustworthy and neither is 2 hours. You can be a gentleman without being careless too.

The comfy cocoon of the western world legal system doesn't really prepare you to interact with a random stranger in the middle of nowhere.

Long story short, my thought process is very logical. Usually in FPS games i can "outsmart" another player, because i can think the situation from their perspective, and guess where they would move next for example.

But when i'm playing DayZ, right when i meet another player, my mind is just blank. I don't have any kind of strategy in case of things go wrong.

I guess you could say i panic a bit.

Do you guys have any tips to get me calm down in player interaction situations?

banna.. wlak with fuit in  hand :P

I would quote all of the things you've said on the second page here, but I'll just go from this..

I agree. But it's not just a trait learned in the military (although that's an intense form of it)... I learned how to stay calm under pressure in competition. Swim meets when I was a boy, martial arts tournaments later on, Quake II and Counter-Strike competitive matches/tournaments/lans, Age of Empires III high rated matches, WoW Arena high rated matches, etc. The first time you are matched up against the #1 rated opponent and you're an underdog, and you have so much to prove, that can get the adrenaline pumping, make your hands shake, make your heart pound, etc.. But when you've played against (in any competition or sport) the best in the world then no matter what happens something clicks in the back of your head that says "I've been here before."

I think part of the military training is just that... TRAINING.. Putting people in situations they are not used to or comfortable with and telling them repeatedly what to do in those situations and make them act it out.. That way, when the shit hits the fan the person falls back on their instincts and that training comes out.

When we were running hip-throw drills in Karate, it seemed rather boring.. I never understood why we had to do it so many times or for an entire class, until I was about 14 and a kid put me in a surprise choke hold from behind. Without thinking or hesitating I threw him over my shoulder. The guy was a body-builder and a wrestler, and in that instant he was completely  embarrassed and humiliated in front of the whole class.. But he took it in stride and wanted to learn, so a would-be-bully ended up becoming a friend.

Point being, all that training came into play and there was no hesitation and no fear because I had been there before.

And on that note: Try different play styles out and find a good group to run with.. The only way you learn something is by doing it... the more you do it the more comfortable it becomes.

Play a load of Arma Wasteland. You get used to the intense PvP pretty quickly. :)

This - Get used to organizing in a group, and learn the signs of an aggressive player and ne who would surrender,

Wasteland is the perfect mod to practice that, as well as shooting in arma

No need to get nervous meeting new people. There are many excellent resources on the web for combatting social anxiety. Just follow one of the many step-by-step guides, and soon you'll be mixing confidently with a range of new friends you made yourself.

Just do a google search, and you'll be surprised and rewarded by what you find. Remember one thing though: when meeting people for the first time, always carry a loaded magnum in your backpack, with an accessible hotkey assignment.

Right... because ignorance solves problems since like... forever. Just sayin'

When i stop caring about my characters i give the game a break. Its only fun when i'm constantly on edge.

Both you don't get it. Stop caring as in don't get so worked up about potentially losing a fight that you can't think straight anymore. Losing focus and getting distracted with "OMG OMG i'm gonne die" will get you killed by somebody who doesnt give a fuck and can focus on what he's doing without a clouded mind. The key to shooting straight and situational awereness is self control. Once your calm and collected... Your calm and collected, and able to process information much better then somebody thats blowing a fuse.

I know what you are mean op because I use to feel nervus all the time when I saw players because I think I was scare about dieing and losing everything what I spend many time trying to find but now I can relax more because I realise... IS ONLY GAME

now when I see a player I don't think about dieing I don't think about lose my stuff I just think maybe this is a new friend that we can have some fun and you know what? ever since I change my attitude I didn't die from any players only from falling from the ladder and a zombie eats me I enjoy much more now and I try to teach maschete master the same way but maybe some people aren't good for communicating with strangers or something because he tries to say hi but usual he get killed

so maybe the best way to stay calm and relax is just feel calm and relax when you play and remember it is a game and you don't really die and all the things you can lose ids not real things I hope my advice halp

Yesterday i got ghosted out of my positon by two morons ...

spawned north of swetlo ( where the new city will be ) at the arse of the world.

so i make a run to the neaf. hit the northern jail building. open the door.

a lonly guy is peeking around the corner at the stairs.

me: " YO YO YO dont shoot im a freshspawn and i dont even have my flashlight anymore so stay cool"

he: " ok come in but close the door. because there are bandits outside "

me: " OK " i close the door.

the second the door is closed the fuy starts shooting at me with his shitty 9mm. hits me in the back. i open the the door and run outside yelling :"ASSHOLE "

i stand around the corne of the prison...

THEN i make up my mind, go back inside while he is reloding, stand right infront of him and give him the finger !

Before you even have read the first sentence in your 'notes' looking away from the screen, your probably dead, there is no time to read notes while interacting with a player....

No sentences, i just keep these in my head: "clothes, voice, backup strat" before speaking to someone:)
