A new player with some questions

Recommended Posts

I'm going to start by saying hello to everyone within the community and thanks for taking the time to read this topic.

DayZ standalone is new to me. I've been playing the game for less then 24 hours and seem to be enjoying it so far. I'd like to ask a few questions though and I'd be grateful if the more experienced players would be willing to give some answers/feedback.

1: I'm playing the Steam version of the standalone game and I've checked the opt of betas option within Steam. However, when I login to DayZ, the game displays 'experimental' at the top left of the screen. Am I playing the stable version of the game? Do I have the wrong option ticked within the Steam?

2: I've been reading on the Wiki page about hunting and using items from hunting to cook? Has this option been put in the game yet? Or is it an upcoming feature? I only ask because I've not seen any animals or wildlife to hunt yet.

3: Is there anyway to communicate with other players? Is there like an area/zone chat channel? I've noticed there's a voice chat feature. How well does this work?

4: If I change servers am I starting out as a new player with just the basic starting gear?

Many thanks!

Hey man!!

Enjoy, things are close to becoming way better!!!

1- there are servers that do say experimental on the top left, never knew why either, but you are on the correct version!!

2- at the moment it is only on experimental build, all things point towards it going to stable this next monday!!!!

3- there is voice and texto communication, both only at a certain distance from another player!! voice seems to be quite good, and it is the best way to communicate in the game once you notice how fast paced it is on encounters!!

4- there are servers for testing only or are having troubles connecting to the hive, so, in some you will start from scratch but you can re-join that server that you already had something going on and all will be the same(hopefully)

anyway, there are some guys around here that post gameplay for new guys!!

enjoy it and play it as it should be played!!!

Thanks for the reply.

Is the hunting feature in the build I'm playing now?

Hunting is currently in the experimental build, hopefully it will be pushed to stable soon

1. Bug. Stable version says experimental, at least for me.

3. Currently the longest-range communication method within the game itself is the radio item. Using that allows other people with one to hear you if they have theirs powered on and tuned to the appropriate channel. That said, I haven't seen them used much because the range is only something like 3km IIRC.

4. No, with some exceptions. MOST servers are on the stable branch and connect to the central hive where your character data is stored; you can move between these freely. However, some servers are running the 'hardcore' game mode with third person view disabled; these also connect to the central hive, but your character data for hardcore will be kept separate from normal servers. So you can have two persistent characters on stable branch that each work on any of their respective server types.

Experimental character data is kept completely separate from stable as well. And some servers have trouble connecting and just reload you as a freshspawn no matter what you do.

I've found that if you ever log into a server as an unexpected freshspawn, the most reliable way to get your data back is to log out IMMEDIATELY (so it has no chance to overwrite the hive data) and log into either the previous server you visited or a server you trust to have a reliable connection to the hive.
