More Realistic and Time-Consuming Interactions

Recommended Posts

Skinning an animal should require a considerable ammount of time

in order to remove the pelt, insides, and make it eatable.Yet with the current system

you just equip the knife, skin animal and insta-meat and hide.Instead based on realism,

you would have to:

-carry the animal carcus

-find a safe spot, away from zombies

-work at least 15 minutes gutting it with the knife to finish the action

In addition, every action to be split in sub-actions,this will allow you to follow the skinning process

along with your survivor and immerse yourself, rather than wait 15 minutes afk for the action to be complete.

Sub actions could be stuff like...

Make initial cut

Remove internal organs

Remove skin

Cut Steaks

Expose bone

Harvest Bone

I would really love to see a system in this spirit be implemented.

Same principle would work with crafting. From bows and arrows to T-shirts and rags, all take a

specific ammount of time to craft. Some more, some less but nothing is insta-made.

Even the tents and fireplace kits, requrire time to set up.

So,what is your opinion on this? :)

Is it a bloody nuisance,or something that could improve gameplay and realism?

Would you really want to sit and watch your character do nothing (or play a little animation) for 15 minutes while it guts something? Yes it would make it more realistic but it is way too far. If you could manually skin the animal with the knife in some way it might be OK but having your character sat there still for 15 mins doing nothing would just be stupid

All for carrying animal carcass to a safe place to gut it. Maybe split the action into sub actions....depending on what you are doing some may not be needed, also stops people starting a 15min action and afk'ing it :)

EDIT -

Sub actions could be stuff like...

Make initial cut

Remove internal organs

Remove skin

Cut Steaks

Expose bone

Harvest Bone

Sometimes you wouldn't have to do all of them, just enough to get what you need weather it be bone for arrowheads, pelt for crafting, meat for food ect. Also diff tools could be required like a saw to harvest bone ect

Excellent suggestion, sub actions would take realism to whole diferent level.

Also they would....

sooo I am for realism and all (as long as its fun) but having your avatar tied up for 15 mins skinning some animal would completely discourage hunting - I know for a fact that if I had to just sit there while my avatar skinned some deer I would never bother hunting.

How about this then...

A cow drops 4 steaks.

Every 3.6 mins of spent work would produce one steak.

So spenting 14,4 mins of work would produce all the steaks (3,6 x 4=14,4).

too much trouble - I can loot cans and pick fruit. I can also hunt other players for their gear (not that I really care to encounter other players) but if hunting for survival becomes anything close to work then its pointless for me to bother with it.

the more work it is the less game it is.

Id agree maybe 15 mins is a little high. But if the sub actions were used and each contributed to the total time, it would never hi that. Not unless you wanted every single piece of usable material off the dead animal. Just for the steaks could take 5-7mins total. Something like...

Initial cut 45s - 1m

Remove internal organs 2-3m

Remove skin 2-3m

Cut steak 30s per steak till carcass empty

They could mess with values to make it whatever total time they want. Id say nice values (bearing in mind they wanna make gameplay changes to hardcore) would be 5 mins total, less if you aren't taking everything...on regular. Then 10 mins total for hardcore :)

Its worth mentioning I hope they use this spirit on cars aswell. Dean once said he wanted transferable skills, both in and out of the game. "gut animal" is something that needs to be expanded on along with things like "attach wheel FR". That should be broken down into small actions that play pretty much every stage of what that entails :)

Yeah, maybe you are right about the time.

Initially my train of thoughts was find a way to force the player move the animal

in a safe location and work rather than insta gut it on the spot (open field) with zombies roaming around,

so in order to achive that,i suggested the 15 minute timer.

Everything though is subjective to change. :)

I like the idea of taking an animal back to base and skinning/gutting it. I'd suggest you can get, say, 4 steaks if you hastily take it from the body while out in the field, but if you craft a butcher's table you can take the thing back to base and then do your longer, multi part skinning/gutting.

Forget time though, just have an ingredient list if you will - several steps that need to be followed to complete the whole process. After all that you get maybe 12 steak from it and a fur shawl.

As an addition, it would be great if you could get water, seasoning etc. and craft a large pan. You could then make soup and perhaps have it make 24 meals (providing you have 24 containers).

Looking through this thread, although i agree with all saying 15min is too long, even a minute is too long in gaming.

"Damnyourdeadman" is onto something i believe. Rather than wait for 1 big piece of meat, divide it into smaller pieces and its your choice whether to sit there and carve for 15 or 2 minutes. This choice should also be controlled by z's smelling blood and rushing towards a kill

For all the "i would rather loot cans of food" what if they reduced the loot and it could mean your death from starvation?

Also with 1 or 2 zombies per town its very easy to loot, server hopping helps as well, but if they had a town full of z's, it would change the way we all play completely.

I agree it shouldn't be instant but no more than 30 seconds otherwise players are just guna go AFK and look for another game to play on Steam instead.

Also, move the carcass to your base or safe place???

If I was in the situation to kill an animal for food then it must be because I'm lost in a forest or dense wood with no base or safe place to go home to.

1) It would also be near enough impossible for one person to move a carcass that size of a cow or deer. Chickens and rabbits and squirrels on the other hand yes.

2) You would only be hunting in a quiet area anyway out the way of zeds and other players. Which would be in a forest or farm area out of a big city maybe miles away from 'base'.

3) You would quickly cut off what you need and move away from the carcass before the smell of flesh attracted zeds and other bigger animals.
