How does the time work in this game? I mean on the server browser on a Dutch server ( I live in Holland ), it say's 15:00, which is daylight but when i join and enter the server it is night time?.

I have never encountered this problem. However your server list may be out of date. Try refreshing. :)

Oh in that case never mind. I sometimes leave the game running (at server list) and when i come back a few hours later the times are still the same.

I have often wondered how far into the northern latitudes chernarus as a country is. when I join a server at 16:00 I don't expect any darkness but that's just because I am used to the day/night cycles here at home - it doesn't get dark here till around 20:00. my assumption is that chernarus is very far to the north for it to be dark so early in the evening during spring.

 

pitch black at 16:00 to 17:00 seems unreasonable at first but then I just adjusted to it and went on.

interesting.... I only play on US servers. not sure what that means but its darker in the game then it is outside when the times coincide.

Not sure about SA but pretty sure Arma2 had a proper yearly cycle thing going on. So if it was, say December, in game it would get dark very early. Maybe the devs have got it set on that sort of date.  I have experienced the server being lit completely differently when reconnecting from a DC (not a restart) for no real reason lol. Maybe a desync or server lag issue?

Well I don't know if it's still like this, but I guess so. (It was that way, back in the mod). A german server for example had the same time as the real time in Germany. When I played on a french server it was 1 hour earlier. And it got dark at around 18:30 if I remember right. That way you could play on e.g. the french server up to 19:30 real time and still have daylight ingame.

But the host hat to possibitly to set the "home-country". Therefore some servers had completely different time zones to adapt to the time the host wanted to play. Somebody who works late doesn't want always night :)

And for the 15:00, I don't know where you live but as I mentioned above, just something far enough away. Maybe they don't even need a "country" to set the time anymore.

Quick answer to the OP: the server you were on was buggy. It shouldn't be pitch black until about 16:30 or 17:00, depending on weather conditions, or possibly your video brightness got turned way down?

 

It seems the game is set in wintertime, when the sun will set very early. I base this on you being able to see your breath in game, indicating it is cold, AND the sun is very low in the southern sky, even at "high noon" (12:00).
