Damaging items when you shoot someone.

Recommended Posts

Hello.

so, as far as i know, theres no physics that tells where the bullet hits you in for example, your back. It just tells that you hit somewhere on the back.

Am i wrong?

Last night i was lioting berezino with a friend. We robbed a few guys before we saw a full mil-gear agressive guy and told him to put his weapon down. In his stress he started to fire against me, and i dodged behind a wall, slipping away from all of his bullets. Then i leaned out and shot him in the chest with my trusty mosin.

he went down in a matter of seconds, and i quickly went to his corpse to see if he still was alive. The guy was dead before i could reach him. However, when we scavenged his corpse, i could see only half of the items in his vest and jacked was ruined, and the rest was pristine. Note that also in both vest and jacket, only the left side was ruined.

have there come a mechanic that can tell where the bullet hits you, and not destroying all items, only those where it went through?

I also hit him right above his heart, slightly towards his left hand shoulder.

Thanks.

I don't think the system is that sophisticated that it can tell where you are hit ( yet ). Afaik they were planning hit detection only on the toon itself..

Hit detection is already in the game. As you can notice the bleeding starts exactly where you're hit. The only thing that's not working as intended at the moment is the detection for the items in a player's inventory

The way it currently works is general hit boxes.

head/chest/legs/feet/hands(?)

It is important to know that the backpack is considered a chest slot item.  So a shot to the chest from the front will still ruin a backpack.  Head shot will ruin all head gear etc.  I'd imagine hands is a hitbox since there are gloves, just as feet are.

All items in the clothing will be damaged, but the damage has a bit of a random value to it seemingly.  So not necessarily everything will be ruined every time.  Each item of clothing (backpack included) also functions as a separate layer of protection.  So your vest may be ruined, but not your shirt/backpack.

As it stands now - try for head shots, you're less likely to deal with ruined gear. If you pray and spray (especially pumping extra bullets into him, it's tough/impossible to immediately tell if someone is dead, the animations and such are too slow) you're going to end up with a lot of ruined items. Unfortunately the latter is often the way it goes and that's probably ok for now - if you pump 5 bullets into someone everything is going to have holes in it and be covered in blood anyway, likely something not lootable. Under the current system I'd like to see items likely to survive (bullets, etc) be less likely to be ruined, but that's probably wishful thinking. I'm sure that will be re-worked and improved eventually, but for now it's a deturrent against blatant KOS which is ok with me and I actually fully support.

problem is it doesnt really work. deathmatchers dont care about the loot; all it has done is disuade those intending to kill for the gear specificly- which werent that many to begin with. Ill be honest given the current state of the game i shoot people for the excitement of combat. wtf else am i going to do? go hide in the woods when not dodging zeds' trying to nab a meal from the grocery?

DayZ will always be a PvP game, but without goals to work towards (im talking real, tangable ones like building a clan compound, fixing vehicles, securing all the epic mil loot, etc) theres not much else interesting to do besides troll kiddies in 'bero.

On a semi-unrelated note, why are hitboxes still the paradigm? Why aren't they interested in hitmeshes? Same concept, just not in box form...  I don't know much about it, but... it always seemed a bit archaic to still be talking about hitboxes (and all their detriments) when one could just overlay a mesh to detect hits vice boxes.

I snuck up behind a server hopper in NE, and shot him in the back twice with a sawed off.  Everything he had was completely ruined.  I thought that probably made sense in that scenario.
