Rule 1 of DayZ Zombies:

So, how does one sneak past a zombie? Is it even possible in the standalone game? I love stealth games and would certainly like the option to go around zombies without being noticed. The weird thing is that I have been RIGHT BEHIND zombies and they didn't turn around to kill me... until I began to back up. I was like... half a football field away from this one zombie when he decided to turn around and start chasing me (I was crouched the whole time, if that matters).

 

It seems like this mechanic is not well-developed yet. Any tips for sneaking right now, during the alpha?

Zombie AI and pathing are buggy and incomplete right now, it looks like they're a pretty big focus and being reworked at the moment. From the ground up, if I'm not mistaken.

 

Keep an eye out for future updates.

It's utterly random at the moment. Sometimes you can do the friendly dance in front of them without them responding and sometimes they notice you from 200 metres away. Through trees.

It is possible to sneak past any zombie, if he's facing the other way. If he's facing your way, you aggro him. Even if the only reason you just happen to even recognise him is that you are watching him through your binoculars. He could be on the moon for pity's sake - If he faces you, he sees you.

Hell, you can belly crawl right up to a zed from behind then stand up and count the fleas on his head.  Or...1 shot him with your machete.  'Course if you're even barely in his cone of view he'll be on you from a football field away in 2.2.

rule 1 is… listen to rule 2...

and you are wrong btw, you can sneak past them.

Yesterday I ran towards a zombie that was standing with its back to me.

I stoped right behind took my axe and swoooosh.

 

Later I was lying under a fir for minutes checking my equipment. I was not drinking, eating or reloading. So only my slow breath could be hearable.
I was going to logout as I heard a zombie right next to me. I stood up and caught two hits.

 

One zombie is not like any other zombie. Sometime they smell you for miles. The next day they're blind and deaf.

You may have aggro'd the zombie earlier. Some are slow to catch up, but stay on you even though you may have gotten miles away from them. The other day I was following the train tracks towards Svet. I ran across another player who was heading south. We stopped and talked a minute, then we both continued in our respective directions. About a quarter mile later I saw a zed running towards me down the tracks. But he ran on past me, he evidently had agro on the other player, despite the great distance involved. Can't wait til they fix that.

The best way to get rid of a zed is by sending it to his maker. B)

I have snuck up on zombies loads of times. I have even run right past them, while they were facing me, and they didn't do anything. So OP is obviously incorrect.

 

However it does seem to be random how they respond with the current AI, so there is no useful tips and tricks how to make them aggro or not aggro.

Saw a video a while ago which said while the zombies are initially dumb (aggro only on people within 100m) and dont aggro from behind, the respawned zombies can aggro from 4000m and from behind, so maybe the coding is still different for normal zombies (that spawn on server restart) and respawning zombies that spawn 10m behind the player constantly.
