Bird/Animal Cages

Recommended Posts

OK so the idea is we have a cage(akin to what you would buy for a cat) spawn in the loot tables. It would be too big to put in a pack therefor be a carry in hands only thing. Maybe make it collapsible so itr can go in a bag if its not got an animal in it.

What can we do with this cage?

Well if you have it constructed, you can chase down a chicken and actually trap it inside the cage :)

The why....

Assuming zeds will chase animals I thought it would be cool if we could let our caged chicken or rat or whatever out an the fringe of a town. Then let it run round distracting the zombies (and in turn the snipers) while we loot.

It also opens up the option to keep a caged chicken at camp as renewable food. As ong as you add some appropriate food and water to the cage, it could lay a few eggs per day, but have the drawback that the clucking may attract passers by to your camp.

Anyways, what you guys think? :)

It's a pretty neat idea, but adding pathing and all the mechanics for the animals would probably take them months. Literally.

And as for the farming idea (above), there's no way to really implement that realistically

Cages to transport the chickens and rabbits and Urals for the goats, cows, pigs and horses.

Build a fence and drop the bigger livestock in,build a rabbit hutch for the rabbits

and a chicken coop surounded with a wire mesh to keep the chicken inside.

(Temperature should take a toll+predator animals)

We are getting a full overhaull of animal AI, I cant see it being a huge problem to implement. The scripting for the release would be not to hard....travel in direction player facing for random time then return to normal wandering/avoidance patterns.

Then we need X amount of models for the cage...."empty" "caged chicken" "caged rat" ect ect. They swap if yoy can corner a chicken and scroll to "catch chicken". All feeding of said chicken could be done via context menu and just give the cage 2 inv slots that wll only hold something like "grain" and "water". If the cage is empty of either for so long chicken dies. Then maybe a few more models for "dead caged chicken" ect. If its dead then you get a new scroll to "clean out cage" and try to get a new one :)

Im looking forward to farming aswell. The mod already has plants that grow in the wild and pickable berrys are the 1st signs that it will be poss in the sa. It was easy enough to add astatic object in arma so adding a static, "hoed ground" texture (thinking alopment sized) shouldn't be so hard. From there lootable seeds addd to the "hoed ground" and away we go with basic farming :)

Some form of planting and harvesting could be accomplished tho couldn't it? Obviously not in realtime! But plant some old spuds and then a few days later potato plants --> couple more days new potatoes could be dug up??

Tho at the moment it's not needed because it's already very very easy to never go hungry in the game. Once hunting and cooking is up and working I hope they make hunger a little more of an issue.

Back to the original point; I like that idea a lot, caged/pet rabbits as well for food supply. Tether a goat to a post, may be another idea?

Great use of a piece of rope :)

Context menu to "leash goat" then lead it away....point at any tree, context menu to tether goat to tree....love it :D

You should be able to put players in cages too. Although they should also be able to suicide by logging out (a la handcuffs) so the game doesn't become the Ariel Castro/Josef Fritzl Simulator.

Maybe im expecting a bit much from base building. Im hoping for all sorts like wood working benches, makeshift furnaces, water tanks, agriculture. Some way for us to set up a fully self sufficient campsite. That should be the ultimate goal for the dayz player in my eyes.....becoming self sufficient.

Untill ofc some bandit crew comes along and wipes it all of the face of chernarus in 30 seconds flat......after weeks of building and scavenging....perma death ftw lol

But if they did do it with utility stuff, then some people may be less likely to destroy the camp instantly. If the owner had built a furnace....or for this idea had some caged chickens....the treasure hunter may leave it intact. Hoping that the owner wont realise hes skimming eggs at the rate of 1 per day....or helping himself to use of he furnace without having to build his own :)

I think you are right, using it as a distraction would be a little niche, but I think it could be really valuable thing to be able to do. By the time the sniper realises all the zeds are chicken chasing you could have been in and out ;)
