No "Specialized" Cartridges [Torchia Tweet]

Recommended Posts

As for 5.45x39 it wouldn't be a problem as there are quite a few weapons in that caliber.

Ak74

ak74u

RPK74

All of which are AK-derivative, and all have 7.62x39 counterparts (i.e. AKM, AKMSU, and RPK). Point-being, there's no real need for 5.45x39 when we've already got 7.62x39.

5.56x45 has a much more robust variety of different weapon platforms entirely (i.e. G36, Galil [amongst other AK derivatives], AUG, FAMAS, L85, AR-15, Tavor, etc.)

Perhaps they don't care about variety.

A wide variety of compatible platforms should not be a deciding factor when adding a cartridge into the game instead if the cartridge and the weapon fits the setting they have envisioned.

Well, they're clearly not doing that. Because they're including ammunition based on its applicability to a wide variety of weapons.

They are envisioning/creating the setting, so it's up to them to deem what "fits." There's nothing they can do wrong or right, as they're creating the fiction.

As long as the 30-06 , 300 win mag and or .243 winchester or 260 winchester make some sort of hunting appearance I will be happy .

And when considering appropriate hunting cartridges you have to remember it's Europe, not America. And you have to consider Chernarus regional game: wild boar and red deer. Many metric calibers are going to be much more popular than they are in the US.

Did a tiny bit of a search and I keep coming up with people saying the .30-06 is the most popular hunting caliber all over the world.

Clearly the 7.62x63 is the most common hunting cartridge in the world.  :P

Also, the Vz-58 fires 200 rpm faster than the AKM, yep still on that train.

Why is 200 rpm useful? When pumping bullets into dangerous mutants, while avoiding deadly anomalies.

Yes this is dayz.

It is, but less standardized cartridges like .260 (European equ. 6.5x55) or .280 Remington (Europe equ. 7x64), not so much.

"what it comes down to is us really wanting to have the lowest possible number of calibers spawning in the game. Thats why we've only been adding in the most common types (9mm, .45, 12ga, 5.56, 7.62, etc...) and why we've been grouping similar kinds of ammo into one. Its the reason we haven't made a distinction between the mosin, blaze, longhorn, or eventually SVD ammo types. In reality these four are firing two different kinds of 7.62mm rounds but the performance characteristics are more or less the same. There was a time when we weren't even going to delineate between SKS and Mosin ammo but after some "enthusiastic" discussions, 7.62x39 was added (thankfully :)). So if we add a Makarov pistol, its going to simply fire 9mmP instead 9mmM. If we add an AK74, it'll fire 5.56mm, not 5.45mm. Thats why I haven't added those in. Those of us who are real gun nuts would revolt (but I have a feeling the wider community dosn't give a crap as long as it looks cool :) )"

I must admit I am completely baffled by that approach towards ammo and ammo types. Seems to go against pretty much any statement by the devs regarding this being a hardcore survival simulator, an anti-game of a game on account of its realism.

Who's this "we all" you're pretending to speak for again?

Okay, if you consider it to be an arcade game then that's your prerogative.

I don't really understand the equating of "hardcore survival simulator" and "accurate weapon caliber." The moniker of "anti-game" is in reference to the lack of artificial rules. Not a strict adherence to "realism."

Now, we can debate how this is beneficial/detrimental to gameplay (I try, I try). As I feel it's sort of detrimental to have a variety of common-to-rare weapons using the same caliber.

Proponents of realism and authenticity.

Well, realism and authenticity are two different words. With different meanings as ascribed by the developers.

I like "realism" and "authenticity" where applicable, and am a proponent of it. But I don't feel it's somehow an affront to the game as to warrant vitriol if they chose a more pragmatic solution.

Welp. That sure sucks.

All I can say is they better not add a Makarov or an AK-74.

And just need to say "told ya so". :P

...maybe they introduced the Walther P1 (8 rounds 9x19mm) to replace the Makarov (8 rounds 9x18mm) because they didn't want to add another type of 9mm ammunition, in which case no Makarov.

It has been speculated that they will never add the Makarov because it does not use 9x19mm and they want to cut down on different ammo types. Who knows.

And in addition, the curious "indefinite hold" that was put on the AK-74M, which again would have used a different ammunition type...

Sadly you were right.

Makes you think if they are willing to make realism compromises on something so fundemental what else are they will go full on Unreal Tournament on too ?

I always though part of the hardcore survival simulator was that you couldn't find the exact ammo type for your gun, on account of there being so damn many different types. And that by having devs that insisted on including a wealth of rare as well as common types of guns and ammo they were deliberately making it more difficult for players to match them, and thus forcing them to focus on the gameplay on the survival aspect rather than the tdm.

It is disappointing to me but the one "bright side" is that as Chris Torchia said, military 7.62x51 and 7.62x54R have extremely similar ballistics, both are .30 caliber, the bullet weight and speed is nearly the exact same.

If they made a 5.56x45mm AK-74 or 9x19mm Makarov it would be much, much, much more irritating to me since those cartridges have far larger differences compared to those weapons' real chamberings.

But wrong chamberings still sucks.

Right, but that's to do with in-game rarity. Not whether the weapons use their matching "realistic" calibers.

They could still make 7.62x51 for the Mosin (erroneous by "realistic" standards) difficult to come by.
