Server Admins - The in-ability to maintain and manage a server

Recommended Posts

I currently rent a server for Dayz Standalone.  I agreed to the rules and restrictions set in by Bohemia while the game is currently in Alpha.  I fully understand and am aware what little rights server admins have currently.

I want to do nothing but provide players playing on my server the best possible experience.  Everyday I play, I find multiple cases of either hacking or exploiting on my own sever.  There is very little I can do about it.  I many times do not know who the player is, "Unknown Entity," and even if I do, after kicking them, they can simply come back under a different name.  This is also ONLY if they are killed.

Unfortunately, there is very little being done, or can be done, currently about hacking and exploiters.  However, if admins had access to logs and were able to ban people, server admins would then be able to maintain their own server and provide a much more positive playing experience for players.  I know that there will be some people who will just ban everyone to gear up.  The same process can be followed for this as the one in place for server admins who just kick everyone to gear up.

If this idea was in placed, instead of server admins kicking everyone off their server to gear up, yes they will instead ban them.  However the players who actual play the game and not play "lets gear up for an hour then die" would greatly benefit from admins having a slight bit of more power.  Since Bohemia is unable to police servers and hackers at the moment, wouldn't it be better to allow the "alpha testers" the ability to police their own servers?

Just my thoughts.

Video of hacker on my server, nothing I can do.

I couldn't agree with you more mate.  I am guessing that its not that easy to just give access to logs via ftp.  Or is it?

Yes. However, I think admins need to be watched. I have come across dozens and dozens of DayZ mod servers where Admins are extremely temperamental and will ban you for even talking about a problem the server has. As far as Admin abuse in-game goes, I really do not mind if admins screw around, as long as they aren't killing a lot of people. I have seen some admins screw around in mod and interact with their player base, and that is what made them great servers. For people who think it may ruin the experience, you can go to a "professional" hive, because active admins offer a new experience as a whole.

Well - OP makes good point, from someone who sounds sane and sensible. With a good video backup for the argument.

I just wish there was someway for a developer to have some input into this or someone who may know why it cannot be allowed.

Indeed, currently server admin is a pretty rough prospect.

Also, the fact that you need to use some awful provider and 3rd party $/slot service to get on the public hive doesn't help. I know this is to maintain a consistent experience across servers for everyone as per the persistent nature of the game, but the current providers who are allowed the dedicated server software are pretty poor overall bar one or two. Also those web interfaces for server control some of the providers are awful for the most part.

I'd like if you were allowed setup a personal server - adhering to the rules of course - and submit it for review to be added to the public hive if it meets certain requirements. I know this would leave even more room for admin abuse and the like, but when people using hacks have seemingly greater control on a server than the admin, it might be time to re-evaluate how things are run.

Its pretty harsh that people with access to business servers, (or even home half-rack units with 500 mbit connections) cant get the dedicated server files and run a server they really have control over.

from my personal experience playing the mod and other games before that i completely agree. give more power to the admins, we need everything we can to reduce cheating to tolerable levels.

The reason why server renters don't have any power at the moment is because, well, it's in alpha.   Ya, ya, big thread on hackusations stickied, I know, but due to all the bugs and glitches it would be too hard to justify whether or not someone was actually cheating.  For those who do rent, if you've got video proof, send it to your hoster and see what they can do.  Until then, life will go on.

Call me lucky, but I have only run into two cases where I knew 100% someone was hacking. Questionable incidents? Many, but most likely desync issues, or 'bad player is bad' syndrome.

If it were ever to get bad enough to warrant action, I would simply stop my server. Not briefly like a restart, but for 5 minutes at least- theyll get bored and find another server before mine comes back up. I have a decent stream of regulars and cant say I have ever had an issue beyond getting verbally assaulted by a squeaker. Call me a cynic but I think there are bigger issues to address before giving clients too much power. I can wait.

Well understandably the devs do not wish to release the server binaries publicly so that's the best way they can still allow people to fund servers.

I completely understand if the dev team want to remain in control.

Curbing cheats was the argument presented in the mod before and we all saw what it led to.

That is a bad bad idea, it would work if it was a private server (i.e. private hive) but not on public servers.

Ran into the ever loveable "KIll me and I'll reset the server" admins last night.

It's the very end of the video.

I agree with the OP, I gave up my server after getting warnings for kicking people off the server which was frustrating simply because currently there is no way to identify who is the hacker so you have to kick everybody.

My advice is right now don't pay for your own server, they are stupidly over priced right now anyway.

Yeah the days of actually paying for a server and being able to admin it are over , now you have all sorts of folk grassing you in for actually wanting to be an admin and trying to improve the gameplay for yourselves or others.

If you pay for it, you should have the right to police your playground.
It's not that people cannot just not enter your playground if they do not like the sandbox you provide them with.

Having an admin (like in the OP video) totally powerless against blatant cheating is just a joke.
Why would anybody have a private server, if he cannot even kick such cheaters?
