AlphaDogMeat . 493 Posted April 29, 2014 (edited) Iron sights should be useful in game up until 600m with a weapon like an m16 and a m4. Useful up until 800 to 1000m with a weapon like a mosin nagant or m14. I want my L1A1. Everything else is just frippery. weedmasta 784 Posted April 29, 2014 I am with you. The over importance of Scopes and optics in dayz bugs me so much. It is who knows how long after the apocalypse yet the world is full of super expensive relatively fragile glass. Alot of the in games optics would be upwards of 3k dollars and would not be in huge quantities within chenarus. Wish the game was set in 1990 or something a time before military standard units used optics and optics were reserved for sniping units. Iron sights should be useful in game up until 600m with a weapon like an m16 and a m4. Useful up until 800 to 1000m with a weapon like a mosin nagant or m14. If only they never introduced the ACOG and the LRS in dayz and instead just kept the m4s with various red dots and fixed power hunting scopes like a 10x non variable mildot scope used for hunting. Are you claiming troops didn't use optics in the 90s...mmmkay
Bororm 1156 Posted April 29, 2014 I think variety is nice, in the mod I usually went with weapons without optics because I personally prefer ironsights to stuff like red dots. I think they should be a bit rare however, so it's something you're excited to find.I think they'll adjust it down the line. Long range scopes and acogs are already spawning less than initially, though I would not call them rare at all.
eskamick 20 Posted April 29, 2014 And if you had canted sights on the weapon would the round "lob" in a different direction needing you to adjust down and to the right? Thats what I was addressing.also being an expert marksmen means exactly nothing when it comes to knowing ballistics.how far will a 55gr bullet travel before gravity overcomes inertia? And yes your aiming slightly upwards. I figured that was a given.Learning the fundamentals of shooting in the military do not a competent shooter make. Being in the military you should know that. gibonez 3633 Posted April 29, 2014 Are you claiming troops didn't use optics in the 90s...mmmkay  Absolutely no they did but not to the extent that US troops now do. Soldiers in the US military are issued optics all across the board everything from red dots to acogs to 1x-8x short dots are all issued by the military. I do not know how prevalent optic Use is with Eastern European Militaries are. Hopefully low for the games sake . Even more rare than ammo and weapons non hunting, variable, tactical and red dot optics should be the rarest thing in the game. Modern day military optics in particular should be so rare to find that you would be scared to even carry one around.
jurionov37 22 Posted April 29, 2014 Chill out boys....its a fkin post apocalyptic survival, not a special forces simulator... you should be grateful when you get a gun, not whine about not having super sights -_-
[Outcasts]Massacre 121 Posted April 29, 2014 Ah yet another sight thread. If it was up to me you would all be using rusted ironsights and scopes so scratched that it's a miracle to even see through them :) That would certainly help with KoS... "CONTACT!!!" "Where?! I don't see him?" "Look through your scope he's right there next to the tree!!" "I am looking through my scope moron! All I see is blurry something and cracks!" "Oh for fucks sake i'll use the iron...." ...You are dead...
gibonez 3633 Posted April 29, 2014 I want my L1A1. Everything else is just frippery. Ya a L1A1 + a g3 would fit the setting so perfectly and should be the creme de la creme of Battle rifles. They should have good thin useable iron sights for engaging at up to 600-800m. The only optics that should work on them should be their proprietary optics no stupid unrealistic crap like a LRS on a g3 or an acog. Something like these 2 wonderful models. They have really good iron sights and are quite serviceable at extended range.
nexventor 429 Posted April 30, 2014 Yo DAWG! I heard you like scopes, so I put a scope in your scope, so you can scope while scoping.
eskamick 20 Posted April 30, 2014 I hang out with mostly shooters so rds' s and quality optics probably seem more common to me. I generally run dots on whatever I can due to crappy eyesight.Commonality of optics in a fictional setting is gonna be just guesswork. I'd llove to recreate some of my guns in the game but I dont think they'll go that far and I'm ok with that
Katana67 2907 Posted April 30, 2014 (edited) While we are at it lets add this too guyz. :D What does the XM-25 have anything to do with anything? And optics are less-subject to arms regulation. EOTechs and the like are used by vanilla Russian troops these days. Not sure what the price of an optic has to do with whether or not it should be included in DayZ. Or whether or not it'd be in Chernarus, as it's fictional. Edited April 30, 2014 by Katana67

Bororm 1156 Posted April 30, 2014 They had a g3 with acog in dayzero, was pretty sweet. Googling brings up multiple variations of real life G3s with acogs attached. Also, while I agree that some of the more fancy optics (like red dots/holosights) are probably fairly rare in real life, look at some images from a lot of the recent conflicts in places like Syria or the Ukraine. Lots of these rebel groups etc, have some form of scope on their guns.

smoq2 221 Posted April 30, 2014 Hate to break the flow of gun and tacticool suggestions, but from what I've heard on one of the streams, rocket intents combat tools to go in the "stick and stone" direction, so I would expect more peashooters in the DayZ arsenal than modern firearms. Well, every weapon they've included so far as been pretty "modern." And they've expressed interest in a G3, FAL, and mid-length AR-15. Lord knows what they're not telling us. Not to mention that the AKM, SVD, and MP5K are inbound. But the vitriol of "tacticool" rages on. Seeing as we've got ACOGs, Aimpoints, Magpul furniture, RMR sights, suppressors, C-Mags, and the like... I'd say us non-discriminatory folks are pretty well-represented.
