Why Devs should allow early modding

Recommended Posts

Let me be perfectly clear.

This is NOT about giving the entire community the code to run with it. What i am suggesting is for the developers give the community to create our own content for a developing game. A group of 20-40 (who have signed an NDA) could take suggestions from the community, create this content and then present the developers with this.

Developers will get final say what goes into the game.

This is not modding like you are thinking of as no one will have access to this select content.

The idea of this is to take some work off developers but most importantly it allows the entire community a way to pick content and get an idea of how that content would look before everyone gets bent out of shape.

Really guys, no need to be negative about this. I would like to see what communities come up with.

Through polling and dedicated volunteers imagine the speed of which we could present the community with a new gun, village, food, animal.

If anything your being negative about the progression. Like TheWizard14 says, paranoia. Breath. It will be okay.

Now, that's better. It's always good to be clear. ^-^

I was referring to the unrealistic aspects of it.

1. Compatibility is often wrong or missing - aka mosin with LRS and b95 with out optics

2. Unrealistic characteristics such as bipods increasing mechanical accuracy.

Ah, well in my personal opinion I don't mind the compatibility errors right now, but I can totally agree that mechanical accuracy needs to be realistic instead of the stupid inaccurate mess we get designed to hinder us rather than just making guns harder to handle.

The problem is that without any checks, you would have a Chernarus full of miniguns, Viking battle axes, Halo Master Chief power armor, dildos, hand-held nuke grenades, Optimus Prime, ninja swords, a ridable T-rex, a Super Mario kart, X-wing fighters, laser firing Hello Kitty doll, cyborg cows and whatever other crap some lunatic thinks up.

Wow bfisher that is a pretty impressive list, I think I've only ever seen the mini gun in the arma 2 mod but I did witness a hacker flying a hospital on the taviana mod that shot tanks for missiles. Was the only hacker we never banned from our server due to the sheer audacity and the hour or so of laughs it gave us

Mods will be the death of dayZ.

Mods saved DayZ back when it actually became popular.

Perhaps but it will only reflect how the majority of players want.

Funny thing about this.  Those majority players are going to be getting what they want in the form of H1Z1.  The mod got completely ruined because it got overrun bye these exact servers.  The actual core of the game was gutted and turned into a death match with infected on the side.  Didn't have to worry about food, water, ammo and the most important, survival.

Please read. Developers will get the final say on any content. Obviously the community would only consider things that are related to the current zombie survival game. I highly doubt the community would agree on T-rex's holding hand grenades while making a rueben sandwhich.

They have to be careful with mods, the hacker problem seems to be getting worse atm and mods may open up new avenues to exploit the game.

There was a mod for that 2017.

The game was pure survival everything was scarce and limited.

Military weapons were pretty non existant and the game was anything but pvp and deathmatch it was true survival.

Point is if theres something you want modding can make it possible.

I think its a arma 3 mod now thats why all the servers are shut down.

There was a few other survival heavy mods too.

http://2017mod.com/

It is simply named 2017 now and it has no zombies it has some kind of weird survival horror elements where you begin to lose your sanity if you do not interact with people or something.

amazing that it takes modders to fix fundamental problems in the game such as 3rd person view peeking meanwhile in the actual game and mod they don't address it. Atleast not yet.

Point is, the mods that people "deem" to be good, weren't that good.  They just removed all the elements of what DayZ was and created death match servers.  Don't get me wrong, I love Chernarus and it'd be an awesome TDM, territory control etc map but that's not why I got into the mod or purchased the SA.  Finding servers for a vanilla DayZ wasn't hard, finding populated servers was.  I get it, there are more people who enjoy simple things.  DayZ wasn't one of them.  Why do you think games like BF and CoD sell well?  They are easy to play games.  That's all the mods did.  They made DayZ easy and destroyed the community that was built on it.  It became segregated.  This is something I hope does not happen to the standalone.  I welcome mods and hope that BiS will clamp down on what type will be allowed.  Also, imo, mods shouldn't be allowed to remove any core features of what makes DayZ

As long as the modding community stays away from the same pitfalls and traps they created before like the 1000 vehicle servers and ridiculous starting load outs I'm cool with it. It takes the fun out of surviving if you start with everything you need

you dont know shit about you're talking.

This things you mentioned are plugins, made from scripting, these things were always possible in the vanilla dayz, wasnt the mods that brought it, blame the arma 2 engine for that.

Modding is changing gameplay mechanics, completely different.

of course, cause the vanilla mod was difficult at all, right?

i'll just LOL at you, dude.

Most of the mods actually made the game harder and more complex by adding more content and more things to do, this 'mods killed dayz' is pure nostalgic bullshit.

It reminds me of the console peasant thought logic.

"mods ruin skyrim"

"mods ruin games"

I don't get it you are always free to not play mods and join vanilla servers.

In the extremely unlikely chance that none exist rent your own and make one, thats what rocks about pc gaming.

I rent my own already thank you very much.  The beauty about skyrim is, wait for it, it's a single player game.  There is no worry about damaging online play to it.  You're trying to justify what the mods did to the original concept of the game and the watered down bullshit that came out of the mods.  Go look at the server lists of the mod.  The number of servers for any survival aspect of DayZ is so small and for the price of the standalone is not enough to justify having a small divided community strewn about hundreds of different versions of the game.  Again, I'm for mods as long as they do not allow them to remove the core aspects of the game and water it down.

yeah, but that's like, just your opinion.

The beauty of modding is that something fully new and non expected can come from a game.

Well, it's even ironic, cause the dayz mod came out of a military sim, how's that for you? There should be no dayz then, as it "took the aspects from arma 2 and watered them down"?

If there's no true survival servers out there anymore, that's because people dont like hard things and go to easy servers, again what's the mod's fault on people being lazy?

Wut, op post is very long...

Why mods will NOT appear at least until game get out of alpha.

You op ever did a mod ? Why modders should update maybe once week ? It become a part time job....

And beside, while in alpha drastical deep modifications are done, would be a modders nightmare. My 2 cent.

I am all for modding. They should release their files for us, to let us mod. For me it seems, that they are not able to do this right, they are all in all overstrained with the situation.

I WILL STATE HERE ROCKETS OFFICIAL COMMENT:

"No problem, I hope I don't seem to argumentive, I'm not trying to be. I don't have very long to write individual replies. Anyway, once we get modding back online (along with private hives), we will see some really awesome community content come up - probably far better than the stuff I've done anyway. That's the awesome thing about modding."

http://www.reddit.com/r/dayz/comments/23tzhy/just_spent_a_few_hours_on_stable_here_are_my/ch12c8n?context=1

there is no need more to say... - it looks like Rocket & co are overstrained...

listen, they are impotent to do this. sorry, but thats the truth. With every patch the game is getting "30% better & 70% shit"

30% better = new contents

70% shit = the new contents are not working / more & more bugs

Can't agree more on the content but is a public alpha afterall, i have tested some closed alphas like c&c f2p, moh and some other private alpha/beta and none of those was in the same condition of dayz, i would be ashamed if i was in theyr pants, but reality is they r trolling us whit our money and having fun for every copy sold.

Anyway when they stop adding stuff and go on beta to bugfix and optimize an SDK would be nice.
