Motorbike helmet

I now realize, after 100+ hours of game, that i always wear a motorbike helmet because i assumed it provides the better head protection. But damn, its ugly

 

Does wearing hats or caps or whatever affects head vulnerability much? What's the best head protection in your experience?

I don't know, I don't think caps or hats provide any protection.

But I always roll with baseball caps, I think they make you look a lot more like a survivor than a guy running around with a motorbike helmet and an M4

Pilots helmets protect from both melee blows, and bullets. But, my current character is an ex-navy seal, so its mandatory that I role with a completely black getup XD Ended up spray painting my ballistic helmet. You have to have the feel guys, roleplay, that's the key to enjoying DayZ.

Wish more of the players had that vision while playing.  I always come up with an idea for my character when I spawn and try to get a little roleplay in..  adds a little fun!  My last character was a farmer, running around with a pitchfork.  He didn't last long but it was sure fun :)

The bike helmet definitely protect against being KOed by punches, but there has been a couple of videos suggesting that it provide little protection against bullets (one shot kills to the head with pistols while victim was wearing the helmet).

 

Since KO-protection is rather important, especially on hardcore servers, where it is a bit easier to sneak up on people, I do tend to wear the bike helmet until I can find substitutes (hardhat, military helmets).

Running around 24/7 in a motorcyle helmet is both stupid looking and impractical. Try it for a while, your heaed overheats, your peripheral vision sucks, you cannot eat anything, your hearing is impared, and after a little while your neck hurts like hell.

 

Lets implement some realism here and when we add encumberance also add negatives for people who try to wear uncomforatble clothing all day long.

I've gotten stuck out in the middle of nowhere many times while driving a snowmachine, and that helmet is actually a god send of insulation, and by no means uncomfortable after 12 hours of wearing it. (And that's even sprinting like hell to get back to the cabin for help.)

The motorcycle helmet is impractical for certain roles IMO. Off in the woods providing overwatch for a squad in town? A nice big round off green/black/red/blue/white target to aim at for counter snipers. 

 

Working with a squad on a fullpop server? Wearing a head dress that everyone else wears messes with IFF.

 

I personally like two head dresses, 1. Camo Bandana with Wolf Mask 2. Burlap sack glitch with aviators for maximum levels of Texas Chainsaw leatherface appeal. Especially when running KoS ops on milkit players in Electro/Barenzino/Airfields

And you can actually open the visor for eating or "airing out" if it should get too hot. Gas masks though...
