well this turned into a zombie argument.

I say we don't know for role play purposes, because really, who would know unless some godly outside force (rocket) told us

But if we knew, we could have more realistic suggestions. I mean if the outbreak only happened, we shouldn't complain about so much food around and same goes for ammo, but that rules out the survival part of the game, and it becomes a zombie shooter game that requires some eating and drinking. If it's been years, then food and ammo should be very rare.

Cannibalism is going to be implemented at some point, as has been stated. But they don't want to make it an easy accessible mechanic otherwise you'd see everyone and their dog eat humans before too soon.

Currently there's not really a way of telling how things will develop since they're still working on the map etc... but the current items spawn system is a placeholder, same goes for item quantity and the condition they're in.

I wouldn't be surprised if a year from now food and weapons will be scarce, would be a damn shame of the hunting and crafting they want to implement otherwise.

"DayZ" stands for "Day Zero"... but not Day Zero of the infection, just "Day Zero" of your survival in the apocalypse. This is taken from the mod.. When you first spawn in, text types up on the bottom of your screen that says "Day 0".. Next day you log in, "Day 1", etc..

As far as how long after the initial outbreak.. It's probably a month or two. The military has all either extracted or died. All civilians (aside from survivors) are dead.

"Survivors" are people who have washed up on shore after a ship/helicopter/plane wreck.

As far as why vehicles are rusted/busted up.. This is a coastal city. Salt-water does horrible things to vehicles and it doesn't take too incredibly long, especially if they sit in one place without shelter or maintenance. Aside from that, who's to say the rusting didn't start before the infection/outbreak? Chernarus is not a  particularly wealthy area.

I've heard that it's a few weeks after the outbreak - it's not overgrown, there's still fruit, and when they add animals they wouldn't have been hunted down by zombies and made extinct.

On the subject of burned-out cars, Chernarus just got out of a grueling civil war and then a Russia/US war that eventually needed UN intervention. That is bound to cause a lot of the destruction seen, in addition to the poverty and environmental effects.

This.  I'm still trying to find where I read about tho.  It was a long time ago that this was explained and I don't remember where lol

I really hope they reduce food, weapons etc. introducing cannibalism to current state is pointless.

The only time you actually feel like you are in post apoc. world is when you are a fresh spawn. I remember once I was debating whether to eat a rotten orange as I was almost starved to death. It had a "the road" feeling to it, unfortunately it doesn't last as 1/2 later I was fully equipped ready to take on a small army.

ya it would be cool if a certain hive like hardcore has less food, i think the food needs to be like cut in half when they add hunting/cooking

I understand what the salty air will do to metal, living on the ocean myself, but the level of damage to the cars goes far beyond what a few months of exposure can do.

The civil war point is a good one, but it's funny how the only physical damage was inflicted to cars and windows. No other signs of combat, that I can think of. None of the buildings have been so much as burned, aside from the hotel, and that was hit by a plane.

Another inconsistency: the power to the streetlights are still running.

Sure, you make that argument, but it's still extremely tenuous, especially in regards to the poor maintenance. That every car was in the same near-death rust-bucket state approaches absurdity. Look, for instance, at Havana. Cold War era cars, poor country, coastal. But you'll find plenty of well maintained cars.

But it's more than that. All upholstery, if my memory serves, is absent from the cars as well, something that takes a fair bit of time, even with exposure to the elements. We're talking nylon or polyester, each of which can take decades to decompose.

As for the Arma 2 model theory, there are a ton of models in Arma 2 that aren't so rusted, and indeed, those used most by DayZ, even as static art assets (crashes, etc) still had paint, and so on.

So... I'm just going to stick with the idea that it doesn't and won't make sense. Rationalizing it doesn't work at the moment, unless you're going to throw probability right out the window.

You make the point, but in Cuba, until recently (like last month) it was illegal to purchase a new car, so those fortunate enough to have cars would take good care of them.

As far as I know the Civil war did not happen in the DayZ universe, but I may have misread that, they could be explained by rioting or the chaos that happened during the outbreak (Some of the Humvees look like they got hit by an IED).  People do stupid shit when ROL goes out the window (Like steal TVs during a power out).  As for not using newer 'intact' models, people would be wonder why we don't have working vehicles, you see a burned out husk of a car with a large cavity where the engine used to be and you know 'Shit, I'm not gonna drive that thing...'.  Now if you see an otherwise intact car that's just a static model, you'll be wondering 'wtf, damn devs why can't I drive that thing?!  Assholes!'  As for the streetlights being on, it's been said they're not suppose to be on at all, though they could be explained with the old 'battery backup and solar panel' argument I just go on the assumption they're not suppose to be on and ignore them.

Early Alpha stage

lol

Much as I hate to say it...yeah...shit will change on the whims of the Devs.
