Went Back To The Mod Last Night - The Little Things

Recommended Posts

A few things about the mod, that I had missed/noticed.

1. Loot spawning in Deer Stands. Please? Please?

2. I swear to god our characters run slower in the mod. It could just be me, but it took a long effing time to hike up to NWAF.

3. The green HUD. Much more a fan of it than I am the white and font (*gasp* remember?) of the SA.

4. The loot is actually marginally comparable to the SA, only issue is that it's dispersed across one or two buildings per town. Whereas SA, it's spread out across tens of buildings.

5. Stary. Need I say more?

6. Searching for stashes. Was my main activity in the mod, and I've been lost without it in SA.

7. How awful the weapon models look by comparison to SA. Props.

8. Sniper rifles with decent optics. Granted, this needed to change in SA. The rifles were separated from the optics (huge deal) and the weapons/optics themselves are rarer. But my god, it's so helpful to have variable magnification optics.

9. Binoculars.

10. The old north. Skalka. The woods. Misty Peak. Pobeda Dam. I miss thee.

EDIT - 11. The atmosphere in the mod is so much clearer and verdant. I never liked the blue tint that they gave the SA.

DISCLAIMER - This isn't a dick-measuring "is the mod better than SA" piece. The reasons for the SA's status are obvious and wholly understandable/necessary. Just some stuff I caught from my perspective in trying the mod again.

Alot of people never played the mod and is playing the standalone for the first time, for me the SA was my first experince. I had bought ARMA II When it was on sale and the mod was a great experience, the only thing that bugged the crap out of me is the speed my guy runs, geez it takes 5 hours to run from cherno to Stary.

Even though SA is out i still think the mod looks beautiful, and under all it's clunkiness is still a blast to play :)

Love it.

yea it adds value to your life, makes it that much more frustrating to get shot and killed.

also

- I love the health system in the mod so much more than in stand alone.

The blood system in the mod is hands down better than the SA, nothing is more satisfying than shooting someone in the chest at 700m with a m24 , have them move 2-3 steps then collapse with blood just squirting all over, then  carefully aiming a killshot as he lays down bleeding.

Things I miss..

1. No status messages, I feel more immersed than when im seeing messages pop up all the time. (like when I used to look for  server with no "side" channel)

2. Dispersal of hospitals and mill loot, miss how the north was the holy grail for guns, and the coast had the only hospials making us move around the map more out of necessity.

3. The barricades, wrecks ect ect, sure these will come eventually and think they will really help set the post apocalyptic mood (ps good call from devs to use the run down looking market from the proving grounds map :D )

Think you covered the rest in OP, im playing a lot more mod than SA at this point tbh :)

Agreed on all points. Why they thought it prudent to put more military spawns on the coast is absolutely, totally beyond me. Not to mention that there just isn't that much military loot anyhow.

I was a bit flabbergasted when I came upon barracks/jails in Zeleno and at Versnik/Dichina (SW of Kabanino). Not sure why these were added. I like the idea of spreading the military loot out in the north, but they went overboard (especially with damn near every town having a police station now).

Yes this is completely vital imo.

Spreading the mil loot north forces people to migrate through the map as they head north. Same thing applies to helicopter crashes and other "dynamic" events.

Also agree that SA has too many barracks.

As you said, police stations are common, these should be enough to distribute better then civilian loot through the map.

I loved when north was the wild west with riches and more often bullet in the head.

I wouldn't mind the police stations if they actually spawned POLICE LEWT.

Pistols, nightsticks, uniforms, cuffs, the odd shotgun and maybe rifle.

But nawp, we get mil loot. :/

I don't think I've found anything more than an SKS there, maybe an M4. Definitely STANAG mags. I think the police stations are perfect the way they are. I'd actually say it's mostly civilian loot. Perhaps police/LE loot needs to be in its own category.

Good points but I do not like HUDs...at all. They ruin the immersion, for me at least. I'm not playing CoD, BF, TF, or Wolfenstein here. xD

I need help, because I tried the mod and found it undesirable to the point of unplayable.  The controls are wanky.  Loot is...?  Do melee weapons exist in this game?  I do like how guns are everywhere, but so are zombies.  I only tried Vanilla.  Should I do Epoch?  Origins?

Also, Im not talking shit.  I watched video after video for the standalone and am one of the best ever at it, but in the mod I found nobody and was killed because I kept throwing flares.

I think the problem currently is, that loot is ultra limited. There is not enough of weapons in SA now, to introduce police loot.

As you said, pistols, shotguns,Bisons, PP-2000's and even some AKS-74U / AK-74M would be in police loot table.

So until more weapons are introduced to SA, loot tables will not make much sense anyway.

Indeed. Especially Point 10.

I do like the new North, but hiding anything is going to be tricky with less dense woods.

The thing I miss most from the MOD is probably the running speed. :/ I mean even with a weapon it's like you're gliding over the terrain.

On the other hand I have to say I like the rogue-like feedback, it gives a much more consise view on the way your character feels, especially now with much more in-depth health system (which I love).

Also the wilderness... 'Tis goon

I love the mod! Especially epoch. The other day i flew chopper down to Elektro, camped on sniper hill for a bit. Saw a guy shoot a fresh spawn for no apparent reason. Took him out at 550 m with my ksvk. I was fully loaded so no need to loot his body, but hey sometimes you just gotta know. So i got back in my chopper landed in on the roof of the hospital where he lay dead and looted his body with the engine running. Heart was pumping as you feel pretty exposed on top of hospital with your chopper blades going full tilt.
Oh and many might not agree but i way prefer the graphics in the mod. They are just some how grittier, and more real life, SA looks like a computer game game? lol
Only played 30 hours of the SA before got bored. I will come back when it has all the features.... till then its mod all the way for me

God I miss binos.

Getting on a motorbike and just hauling ass through Cherno and Electro full speed dodging the inevitable noobs firing their makarovs as fast as they can pull the trigger..... lol good times.

Heli hunting and then destroying said helis without ever lifting off.  Owner returns..... WTF?

The mod offered so much more.

That said I still believe the SA will surpass it.

Patience young grasshoppa.
