Starting with tools? Your thoughts..

Recommended Posts

Anyone else think it would be a good idea to start a player off with realistic items they might put in a survival bag? I don't mind not having a gun, in fact I prefer it. However, these all seem like normal items a person would carry in any survivor situation, zombies or not.

Players start with:

Matches

Hunting knife

Canteen (empty)

Hatchet

This could be on top of the current starting gear, replace it, or any mixture of the bunch. Having these 4 items works out a lot of different problems IMO.

-You can now hunt and find water right away

-No one has any reason to kill a fresh spawn for gear, as long as the water bottle is empty.

-Hatchets no longer would spawn everywhere

-You have some means to defend yourself from zombies

-You are still a easy target for bandits but are a slight threat to them also

-Could make items like the map, compass, etc. more rare and sought after items.

I'm sure there are more benefits to doing this, and maybe even some negative side effects I haven't even considered.

So what do you guys think?

I think realistically you should start off with everyday items that you might have on your person. A watch, maybe matches, possibly a drink. Defintely not a weapon or medical supplies - perhaps a bandage if i was feeling nice.

The current starting gear given is , I think , the best. This way you spawn with nothing and you have to work for everything - It is more fun and rewarding.

The watch is a good one, seems like something common most people have on their persons. Also doesn't change much as they are not that rare at all and not that important to most people.

The only problem I currently see with the whole is there are only so many common loot items that you can really find. Once you have these, there might not be any need to raid anything besides military stuff.

Still its early and if we get some more items eventually, I think it would be a good idea for starter gear.

I don't think its a 100% fair question because we start with a backpack. Think of it like asking a random girl if she has a band aid in her pocket, 99% of the time its going to be a no. Now ask a girl with a purse and those odds might change to 50/50.

If we want to only include what a person would actually have on them, then that's fine with me. Start with no backpack, flashlight, etc.. Its like taking a nap on the beach and waking up and finding the world went to ****. You have nothing.

Now I have many items in my house that are also in the game, and I almost never have any of them on me. I just figure if I'm packing a bag to survive, I would include stuff like this. Now maybe we are a guy who decided to go camping on the wrong weekend. We have what we need to survive in the wild, but not to survive the undead.

Just trying to use my imagination because this is a sandbox and there is currently no story that I know about. It just makes sense if you have some items, you would have others. If not, then you would most likely have nothing.

I agree if we have some kind of backstory. You had 2 hours to get out of Dodge scenario - what did you quickly grab?

Allow the dressing of animal carcasses with the hatchet, which can be done in real life.

Needing to find matches, a hatchet AND hunting knife in order to collect and cook meat is brutal, especially when cooked meat is the only viable alternative to blood bags.

Even then, Wawazat, eating about 10 steaks should make the player vomit profusely, which I think should actually happen to stop players just devouring more food than humanly possible, lol.

I think all players once had excellent equipment, but then they fell from the mysterious boat and only the equipment that was safely secured to their vest and in water safe compartments in the backpack remained.

It's worth noting that you DID start with a decent amount of starting supplies (food, a filled canteen, and a few medical supplies) in previous builds, and it was nerfed specifically because people would farm the beaches for freshly spawned players; plus some players would spawn and just start PKing other fresh spawns.

Another thing to consider is that if everyone is spawning with the same things, then it removes any value from finding that item by scavenging. I already hate finding hatchets when I've already found my first one, but imagine if you just started with one. Nuts to that. It'd get to the point where what are we even going to scavenge for?

I think it's fine as-is. You spawn with nothing but a bandage and the balls to dare and find stuff to survive on.
