Viewing PBO files

Recommended Posts

I wanted to know the configs for particular which are included in the PBO files but so far didn't manage to get the PBOviewer to cooperate with DayZ standalone.

Any tips on the tools used to preview those files?

I have hidden a few comments. You know what they say, do you not?

If you don't know what you're talking about...

.pbo's are gamefiles and have nothing to do with hacking whatsoever. Instead, DayZ / ARMA / any BIS-game and any modification is based on .pbo-files and they're Bohemia's version of compressing files.

To answer OP's question:

Any .pbo manager will do.

A quick google search suggests you're incorrect?

You can obviously manipulate the existing .pbo's on non-protected servers - but that's a thing of the past in SA anyway, as they're being checked for their signatures.

ARMA 2, ARMA 3, Take on Helicopters, DayZ Standalone - they're all based on .pbo's. See it as one version of compressing files, similar to a .rar-file.

If you want to search for .pbo hack, you will find something. Whether that's applicable or not should be left to people who do know what they're talking about.

I myself am Dev for ARMA 2 and have created my own modifications and missions, so one can assume I know one or two things.

EDIT:

As I have said - it's not applicable. Leave it to our judgement whether it is or not. This is your last verbal warning. You're trying to stir up emotions against the OP that don't represent the current situation.

The video you posted is even from ARMA 2. Things have changed. You can't just join any protected server, may that be SA or the mod and get away with edited .pbo's - they're all signed. Ever seen the message "Wrong signature for file: xx" --> that's exactly what it is. You can't fool it that easily.

Ze german is right. .pbo hacks are not real hacks. It's when you delete some of the .pbo's so you can see through buildings and what not.

Get back to work!

lol j/k. PBO's make up a core part of the games files don't they? So you may not "hack" that actual PBO but the files within and then re-compress the files back to the pbo and thus have a hacked game. So what files are getting hacked that allow hackers to work their crap and is their anything u can do to stop that?

Also, I didn't know you Dev's read the forums so glad to hear it :)

May not be a hack, but definitely an exploit.

Definitely :)

That's the exact reason why they added the .pbo check.

A quick disclaimer:

I'm not trying to "hack" or "cheat" when playing DayZ. Hence why I asked for a tool which serves the sole purpose of a viewer, not an editor or anything that would even remotely temper with the file's structure.

I would have been unfathomably dumb if I thought that simple .pbo modification could benefit a cheated gameplay in the long run.

No, you can't. Every .pbo has it's own signature-verification. This verification fails as soon as you unpack and repack it, even if you don't change anything. If the "Signature-Check" fails you get kicked off the game. This sometimes also happens when one of your files get corrupt, but I personally rather have a few false-positive kicks than an extremely easy way to exploit.

I have provided you a link for a search. The first one would suffice.

I shall lock this now, as it can quite possibly derail too quickly again, suggesting you're trying something malicious with it.

HOWEVER: If you have any further questions, feel free to contact me.
