What are the cons of having higher Field of View

Recommended Posts

apart from the reduction in scoope magnification. What do you prefer? What are your settings? Why choose your FoV settings?

I actually like my FOV settings pretty far out. I dont really see any cons to it

Hi.

I guess it depends on your preferences. If all the player cares about is pvp-death match style play then they will probably want the highest fov possible(for obvious reasons).

If you want the game world to look realistic, with proper undistorted shapes, and accurate distance gauging, you will need a lower fov(even lower than default on small monitors).

Picture your monitor being a picture frame in front of you. The imaginary triangle from between your eyes to the edges of that frame represents the FOV needed to portray the world with the same shapes, sizes and distances(i.e. zoom levels) that you would see it in real life.

Of course most people wouldn't want to play that way, but it IS how they set up simulations like driving simulators and such.

Regards.

I play at 75.  Once you start getting closer to 90 the camera starts to look like a fish-eye lens, which is unplayably awful imo.  I can't even tolerate watching youtube videos of people who play with the FoV settings like that.  It just looks terrible, regardless of how much it benefits you.

If you have time , can you elaborate on the pro reasons?

You mean the picture getting stretched at max FoV right?

Precisely.  I'd rather have a smaller frame of view, than have everything stretch and contort constantly.  Plus, at 75, I don't feel 'boxed in', or constricted at all.  Just gotta keep your head on a swivel, I guess.

Because you can see wider area, of course. If you are playing on 3 screens, you can have very high FOV without proportions being distorted.

Wow 3 screens. I can't afford that hehe. :)

Neither do you need 3 screens. I play on one myself. Thought about getting two extra but the gain is not worth the money. Also, resolution that high, performance will suffer.

95 degrees is good for me, distortion is not so bad and can see stuff around me. Though I usually play in 3rdP. I have my left ALT key broken so I am not using the free-look for now. Hopefully will get it fixed before I can return to SA.

smaller FoV = better FPS

but I still prefer a relatively big FoV ;)

I see. Yeah high reso will give rise to low fps.

Playing alt key must be tough. I can't dare imagine

oh. I thought it was the other way around since you render details less.

it's weird in bf4 I use like 110/20 from years of playing Arma with the ability to turn my head I can cope with a much smaller FOV as i'm pretty much always turning my head, my eyes are happy enough..

You don't zoom as much while using a scope or pressing right click. This will also screw up range marks on scope, if any are actually put in the game. Although, it does seem like you can zero anything that can actually shoot at range.

Correct, the mil-dot scopes are proved to be inaccurate when you are using too high FOV for your resolution.

Is the accuacy of sights still accurate? That is, for example, a red dot sight on the M4 land hits directly where the dot had laid on the enemy's body?

Hm.

I think: You see less objects => better performance

xD

The center of a sight will always be the center, but the bullet actually hitting center even at close range is a whole different issue...

what do you mean? do they hit dead center with correct zeroing?

ballistics.

center is center. if you shoot to 400m range with 400m zeroing then it hits the center. to 700m distance, 700m zeroing.

If you are interested in measuring distances with mil-dots then at high FOV, the calculations give wrong results.

Ok good. I was worried a bit cause I am going to switch to high fov now that I rarely use the mosin.

I was speaking more about the general shit accuracy of all the weapons.

They aren't that bad in my opinion. What's bad is the fact that there is delay of bullets registering. Gives the enemy time to hit back.
