Lack of Direction Regarding Items

Recommended Posts

One of the things that I love about this game is the Eastern European setting. The town names and map layout go well with the apocalyptic theme for the Westerners playing as they amplify the sense of alienation. But I am quite confused about the vision of this game in terms of this Eastern European setting and wonder if the devs are too. While the Map is clearly being designed to a definitely eastern aesthetic and while we have many weapons and items that are right at home in the Czech Republic we also have many that IMO make no sense at all where appropriate CZ Republic, Russian or Soviet Union alternatives exist.

I also feel that ATM the balance between Easter egg content and real content is way off, tac. bac. and masks are great and all but isn't early Alpha the time to get the core content in, the stuff that defines the feel of the game? Shouldn't these items be put in during Beta phase?

Opinions?

Examples of the strange Weapon choices:

FNX-45 -> Makarov

Colt Python -> Nagant M1895

Amphibia S -> OTs 38 Silent Revolver

M4A1 -> AKM

Agreed on most part, but you most not forget that Chernarus was on the edge of USSR, thus the influence of the west was higher eg more western goods etc, as it was in real life, further from Moscow, less Soviet influence.

Items seem completely fine and in line of where I believe the setting is.

All indications appear to me that the closest country in real world to resemble the in game world is the Czech Republic.

From my understand the CZ Republic has a wide variety of firearms including a wide variety of western weapons.

Weapon choices also make sense because of ammo.

.22lr,

357 magnum

and

.45 acp

are all ammos far more common world wide as opposed to their now defunct soviet and russian counterparts.

This gives the devs more freedom in adding a bigger variety of weapons in the future.

This may come as a shock, but firearms are exported all over the world.  I'm sure you can find an M4 in the Eastern Europe just as you can find an AK in the USA.

Chernarus = fictional country.

Chernarussian history = fictional.

NATO/USMC intervention in fictional history of Chernarus = true.

Czech Republic maintaining NATO weaponry in real life = true.

EDIT - Czech Republic having one of the most vibrant European black market arms trades = true.

Yeah, but Chernarus was an eastern block country, so western weapons would be rather smuggled there, than exported, so the amounts would be very very very small, and a very small variety.

You know the Soviet union collapsed a few decades ago. Importing western weapons legally and illegally would be extremely likely.

Real-world circumstances are not the sole determinant in what weapons can be included in DayZ. But EVEN IF you use the real-world (and not the ARMAverse) to dictate what can and cannot be in Chernarus (which is based on the Czech Republic, not that it's relevant, as the above statement indicates...) then AR-15's, Mk 48's, M203's, M60's, EOTechs, ACOGs, SpecterDR's are all plausible.

See this as well, for Russians using "western" optics/accessories

But again, deep breath, real-world circumstance is not the SOLE DETERMINANT in what is plausible in a FICTIONAL universe.

As far as I know, the game takes place in the 80s.

No, it doesn't. ARMA II took place in 2009. M4A1 came around in the late 1990's. Magpul 40 rounders have only been around for a couple years (if that). Magpul 30 rounders have only been around since 2007. Magpul has only existed since 1999, and has only been making stocks since 2002.

Again, real-world circumstance, irrelevant.

My bad then, judged by the looks of the map, it seems that chernarus would rather fit into Africa, rather than in Europe, judging by the countries state.

Ofc, silly me, prison has computers xD Sorry guys, shame upon me!

notice how with the addition of the new team members there has been a dramatic increase in content creation,

I think if you wait all this stuff you are talking about will come. I suspect that at this point in the game people dedicated to assets could be very mobile in what they are working on and that might be a good thing for creativity. To have one guy sit down and make hats from now until next year would be soul crushing and unecessary and I suspect the easter eggs serve as fun diversions.

As for the weapons I cant really comment excpet that Im sure there is a map of what needs to be added and artists are just chipping away at it. If you follow Chris Torcia on twitter you will often get sneak peeks of whats coming and discuscion on why weapons are or are not being added so I suggest that.

All I want in the end is a diversity of deep choice. One of the cool things in dayz mod is that you can often balance weapon loadoat for pvp and pve and that makes choices interesting. Options like the .22s for quietly dispatching zeds add to gameplay, whether or not a gun makes locational sense to me is not a huge deal as Im not enough of a gun nerd to have immersion broken by that

I do hope they put a makraov in though just for old times sake.

some weapons are in game early for atachment system. There arent many atachments for AKM, GP-25 and optics... There is tons of shit for M4 though

Who is to say this isn't a Westernised area of Russia or area close to Russia? e.g. Hong Kong is very westernised. This is a fictional game after all

People have this idea that high-speed-low-drag gear is only to be found in the West. If Syrian militants can get ahold of a Chinese anti-materiel rifle, why is it not plausible for an AR-15 to be in fictional-ass Chernarus? /whisper Whose fiction incorporates NATO weaponry anyhow
