How do I log off without losing the progress I have made?

Make sure no zombies kill you in the 30 secs it takes to log out

run to the woods while making sure you are not followed by zombies or other players and find a nice thick evergreen tree to park in, wait about 30 seconds or so to make sure no zombies are aware you are in there and log off. you should still be in the tree when you log back on :) some people log out in the log cabin looking house too cause they don't spawn loot and a lot of those houses are on the edge of small towns or out by themselves. after a while you will get to know whats a safe place and whats not. good luck and welcome to the apocalypse.

When you log out, a ghost of your character stays in the server and sits down for 30 seconds before disappearing. People and zombies are able to kill this ghost, this is to prevent people from "combat logging" (logging out in the middle of a fight). Make sure you aren't followed by a person or a zombie and find a nice safe place. Usually upstairs of a building or in a forest will protect you from zombies.

just hide inside a thick bush or  a evergreen tree. and for about 10 seconds or more look around your sight to see if there are any players or zombies.

Much as above, I like to find a safe place eat and drink until I'm stuffed, then I've spend a minute arranging my inventory take one last look about and log knowing I'm safe.

i just played twice today and i lost many stuffs because of my wrong ways to log off.
