How to record high quality videos

Recommended Posts

I was wondering how to get a high quality video on youTube.  I seem to have done it in the past but now with my dayZ videos they aren't as high quality as some of my videos used to be.

I believe it is in the creation process of Pinnacle studio or something with youtube.  I have tried exporting in many different formats but they always end up the same in youtube.

I was wondering what settings you guys use for Fraps (mainly framerate).  And what format do you export in.  Also, is there anything special I need to do for youtube, because it seems to downgrade the quality when it gets to youtube.

Thanks.

Fraps is your problem, you seriously should change to a program called: Dxtory

http://exkode.com/dxtory-features-en.html

It might sound like a program that you download to film one video, but it's used by many youtubers.

Also, what program do you use to edit your videos with?

On fraps, I keep my frames at 29.97.

Also, I use windows movie maker to edit. It works fairly well for what I use it for. It's very basic and simple and it allows me to export in 1080.

I think I get decent quality out of it. I could do with a few settings changes though.

I've heard good things about dxtory as well, though. I might switch it up myself.

I have the same framerate on fraps as well, someone also told me to do that.

I will check out this program when I get home.

I use Pinnacle Studio (15 I believe).

You really have to check the resolution you're recording on, also when you edit the video it's important to take the right format, resolution etc.

Here is a video you should watch, if this video can't help you I suggest you to just search from google.

Try out the Dxtory.

Fraps = 10 mins of gameplay - 50GB (If you keep the best quality) in 1080p, 60 FPS.

I still manage to balance it and get good quality videos.

I currently use Nvidia shadowplay, but it is a bit picky with dayz and the settings I use. If I have my hdr on normal (16 I think) dayz will just crash upon start up. I am also not 110% happy with the quality from it either when I compare against the likes of dxtory.

The good thing about shadowplay is the file size, it is quite compact when compared to fraps or tory.

I used pinnacle to edit some stuff awhile back, it din't play nice with some codecs I was using. I ended up using tory and movie maker with minimal edits for the quality I liked.

Also the lagarith codec for dxtory is pretty good for compressing your captured videos and retaining good quality and smaller file size.

Mirillis + Sony Vegas + Youtube recommended render settings in Vegas = Good stuff. EDIT: I found that it's the render settings in your editing software that can be the culprit of crappy quality vids on YT. They actually have recommended settings for certain editing programs for best quality rendering.

I've used them all. All of them. And I found that Mirillis works best for me. I am really happy with the quality it outputs. I don't recommend using the export feature though, as it compresses it. Which makes it really bad for editing and rendering later. The quality is always worse, and comes out blocky. So I've just started editing the raw files instead.

At the end of the day, it all comes down to personal preference after much trial and error. Doing that will net you the best results, if you have the time to test them all. If you're serious about it, then I would suggest that route.

Okay, here's the issue:

Youtube reformats all videos to a 30 FPS format that is inferior to the original file video. The only way around this is to record in a ridiculous resolution, then upload it to Youtube. If your computer can't handle that, then 1080p is the best way to go.

As for recording, I use ShadowPlay. It is built in to GTX 650 or higher GPUs, and reduces framerate by about 1-5 FPS. Fantastic tool; records in 60 FPS should you choose to do so, and the video quality is astounding. However, ShadowPlay cannot be downloaded and is NVIDIA 600+ series GPU-exclusive.

Fraps really is the best option if you cannot use ShadowPlay, because it records in the highest quality of all the downloadable recorders. However, Fraps causes massive lag due to its quality (ShadowPlay uses excess GPU power already built into the card meaning 1-5 FPS difference, and Fraps uses CPU power meaning however much the game is not already using. Because it has to split CPU usage between the game and Fraps, the framerate nosedives) Also note that both Fraps and ShadowPlay produce massive .avi files if you up the quality to the max; I'm talking 10GB+ videos for a few minutes of recording.

Editing videos is a whole other deal, due to the quality of the video depending on the codec used for rendering the video. I use Sony Vegas Pro 9, which allows for 1080p quality (Vegas Pro 12 is stupid because it changes everything I knew about 9, if someone can link me a tutorial for past VP users, let me know). Vegas Pro 12 can allow for 1440p, should you get the right codecs for it. Again, the main issue with upload quality is the Youtube conversion. As mentioned before, the higher rendering quality video you upload, the better quality the end result is, but that is a given.

Here's a video recorded with ShadowPlay, then edited with VP9, then uploaded to Youtube:

Yes, that is me talking. Lag in the video is from the server lagging, not the recording.

Hope this answers any questions.

snip

I found Mirillis gave me the the same quality I got with Fraps, with a more manageable video size. The differences in size and quality is hardly noticeable.

See? You balance quality with Fraps.

This is recorded with Fraps, half-screen 1080p (half the resolution), and 30 FPS.

Then with my editor I just re-scale it back to 1080p, not 1920x1080, but 1440x1080 for some reason.

It's still pretty good.

Here's a video I made, I don't know if you can see the difference between fraps and dxtory but I had like 30 FPS with Dxtory when Fraps gave me only 18 FPS at most.

I use a combination of FRAPS and ShadowPlay, and I edit with Windows Movie Maker.

Tried various settings for Shadowplay (using 760 GTX) and FPs is lowered by much more than just 1-5FPS! If recording at 30FPS (why would you want more than 30FPS is beyond me but anyway) I get a drop of up to 30 FPS down from 45-50 to 15-20

I dont have a mad CPU (i5 Quad core 2.66Ghz) and recording goes straight to a separate SSD drive.

I use fraps 30fps and half-size, then movie maker to edit in 1080p.

I tried shadowplay and it makes my game lag like crazy and doesn't record my voice.

GeForce Experience has the option to enable microphone input under the ShadowPlay settings.

I have a GTX 760 and i5 CPU with the videos recording to a 1TB HDD and again, I record in my raw framerate (usually 50+)
