The Cold War saw many different buildings to help both the East and West should hostilities, specifically nuclear war break out. These include shelters, extensive bunkers and submarine bases. Chernarus, while not Russian itself could very well have sided with them during the Cold War and allowed Russia to build a submarine base, on their land.

That is my idea, a Soviet Era submarine base, specifically for repairing submarines somewhere in Chernarus.

Backstory:

While the backstory for the base can change the basic idea would be as follows:

During the Cold War Russia builds this secret submarine base on the east coast of Chernarus, to help its military/spying efforts. It is manned by Russia till the end of the Cold War, when it is abandoned by the Russian military who no longer need it.

After a short stint of being abandoned, it is repaired and inhabited by the Chernarus military who use it for their submarines. Once the infection hits, it becomes a base of operations for the military, as well as a haven for civilians till it is over tun and the military either did or retreat.

Location:

It would need to be on the east coast to gain access to the sea, and would need to be close to towns, and in a mountainous area, so it is easier to hide. Somewhere up North would be best, perhaps somewhere close to the NEAF.

What would it look like?

I think it would be cool if it was based off of this Underground Sub Base at Balasklava, though it's design can change based on what size it will be etc.

http://englishrussia.com/2011/11/05/underground-submarine-base-of-balaklava/

What kind of loot would be available?

This is where the repair part of its name comes in. Along with loot expected of a military run area (guns ammo, clothing) it would have parts to repair cars, boats and other such vehicles. This would make sense, as a place like this would be expected to have these types of items. It may also be an area where you could find (if something like this is implemented) information on what happened in Chernarus, during the out break. This could include documents, recordings, reports and the like.

Will there be a Submarine? Can I ride it?

I think there should be a submarine, but it should just be for show and not for joy rides. Not only may it be impossible with the engine, but it is kind of pointless, unless used for spying on boats or bases near the water. People should be able to enter and loot the submarine but not much more, exct maybe use the periscope.

Feel free to comment on my idea, and ask any questions about it. Thanks for reading!

I highly doubt in Chernarus lore they were a rich enough country to have subs.

People are a stickler for things such as that!

Actually, the Chernarussians are quite a strong democratic power. They even send their troops abroad with the UN. Just because it's "Former Soviet" and "Eastern Europe" doesn't mean it's a third world cesspool.

If that is a concern, it could easily be said that the Russians left subs behind which the Chernarus military used. Also, they probably could afford the subs, considering they have three military bases in such close proximity, as well as various city areas. Either way, the backstory can be changed, to simply have been abandoned once Russia left, depending on if it is required.

After the civil war the chernarussian government became even more powerful. Keep in mind that Chernarus is a very large country. In the game we are only exploring a small portion of it, the South Zagoria Province

This is certainly an idea I can get behind. Would be a very characterful addition to the map and an absolute deathtrap to explore if a 'gang' ever set themselves up inside. Wouldn't like it to be absolutely massive though, maybe large enough to house a single submarine (which could either be 'wrecked' inside the pen or on the coast nearby). I reckon at that inlet north-east of Svetlojarsk.

In addition I'd like to see a naval harbour added in, with a small military vessel. Maybe Svetlojarsk could be modified slightly to include a small military base (for naval personnel) and include a minesweeper or a coastal patrol vessel in the harbour or floating out in Guba bay.

I am not very knowledgable on the History of Chernarus, so if we are in a small part of a larger whole, it would make sense they continued with the base after Russia left. Not only could they as a country afford to So, but also they would need it for defence reasons. Thanks for your contribution =D

I was thinking of suggesting some of the area be radioactive, as the subs themselves would have been.

It would fit Chernarus massively, it is a coastal area set in a place that used be USSR, so just like in Ukraine there is a high chance of sub bases built in USSR times, so even if they aren't used now they would be quite likely to still be there, much like the ones Top Gear found on their road trip to the Crimea.

Sure, Chernarus seems pretty poor, but the Soviet Union would have funded the construction; back before the collapse. Maybe the Chernarussians maintained the base, maybe they didn't. There probably wouldn't be a submarine left there (If Chernarus had any submarines, the would have fled the zombie apocalypse, like the Chinese sub if you read World War Z) but the base/bunker itself would be a really cool map area.

What if it was so damaged they couldnt escape with it, there could be place for two and there is one left, how about that?

Why would the subs be radioactive? Did they spray them with radioactive waste? Radiation doesn't work that way unless you blow up the reactor.

Yeah, the Soviets as well as the US and other used nuclear power to make their subs run. I understand this is fro. Wikipedia, but still it sums up when the soviets started using nuclear reactor subs nicely.

"The Soviet Union soon followed the United States in developing nuclear-powered submarines in the 1950s. Stimulated by the U.S. development of the Nautilus, Soviet work on nuclear propulsion reactors began in the early 1950s at the Institute of Physics and Power Engineering, in Obninsk, under Anatoliy P. Alexandrov, later to become head of the Kurchatov Institute. In 1956, the first Soviet propulsion reactor designed by his team began operational testing. Meanwhile, a design team under Vladimir N. Peregudov worked on the vessel that would house the reactor."

That is the idea, zombies and looting in a place, you need to be careful when entering, as people could be hiding inside, or enter in after you.

Great idea. I just don't see any place it could actaully fit on the map, seeing as these bases were masskve, probably around Elecktro size. Maybe just a Beached sub.

Some custom loot should spawn there, to, like Russian Navy blue/white striped shirts, Navy hats, and Radioactive protection gear (Which is carried on nuclear submarines, just in case) and just imagine firefights on the Sub...

I personally want some derelict ships to be Random events, much like heli crash sites, that could be boarded for loots.

I didn't mean that kind of radioactive...why would the surrounding area be contaminated? They'd be stupid to let it become radioactive where people walk around don't you think? And if there was a leak that would be the last place i wanted to be for around 20km radius even with a hazmat suit...remember Chernobyl and Fukushima?

Oh I see what you mean. I would say that if the base was to be radioactive, it would be minimal so as long as you didn't stay there for a very very long time, you should be ok. While I would not mind if the base was radioactive! and while it may be more realistic! it would probably be better as you suggest just to leave it radioactive free.

I love the idea, the base could be made at Utes when included in Chernarus map.

Yeah there is nothing really. When I searched before posting submarines where only really just mentioned in other threads.
