Why do zombies spawn out of thin air (experimental)

Recommended Posts

I kinda dislike that after I shot once, I killed other zombies with hatchet only, yet still more and more spawned and went right after me.

But yeah, we will see where this goes.

What's trouble me more, on experimental, is the desync. Kinda hard to melee zombies, plus it's pain if your buddy running next to you start "warping"  around. I can see why they did not move this to the stable, the desync needs to go first.

It's only a placeholder as the DEV's have stated and I don't care, I still like it. At least they pose some sort of threat now. Gives you something to do besides worry bout other survivors.

One thing I found interesting in testing that a maximum of 4 zombies can be focused on a single player at once. I was trying to gather all the zombies in Berezino to form a horde and every time I'd get a 5th zombie, one of the previous 4 would "forget" about me.

I like they way they are on experimental as well. I killed one on the way into a building and got attacked on the way out by a new one. It keeps you on your toes much more than when they only spawned on server restart.

As to how they spawn, I agree that just popping into existence out of thin air is a little weak. However, given the back story, rising out of the ground doesn't fit (really cool idea though). Maybe they can just spawn laying down and have to stand up so that popping into existence doesn't look so weird.

Yeah....

  • DayZ Early Access Alpha: Feature development, during which the vast majority of major bugs are created/occur.
  • DayZ Early Access Beta: Content development, during which the "meat on the bones" is added to the title, alongside the beginnings of major bug fixing surrounding issues created during the feature development of alpha.
  • DayZ Early Access RC (Final Beta stages): Bug Fix, optimization, and balancing. During which the stone is polished, until the DayZ dev team feels the title is ready to go live.

Zombies: Simple respawn mechanic implemented for zombies, pending more robust method

...so why arguing here?

Sure it is a placeholder, but what do we need it for? It doenst even add to immersion or affect the core gameplay in a big way. You just need to get your axe out more often and wait for the animations to finish..

well....to test the system. Because in it's core it will stay the same (zombie dead? Spawn new zombie!), so it's not a placeholder it's...well...an alpha ;) Zombie-respawn-early-access-alpha-experimental.

Try not to fire a weapon if you don't want to see the swarm of Z's...it's that simple.

Not really. Sometimes the spawning is triggered even when you don't make a sound. And they always know where you are and run straight for you. They never spawn and just walk around, they're always part of a steady trickle of never ending zombies that come straight for the player.

it would be awesome if they would crawl out of the ground instead of spawning standing up.

Wouldn't make sense either because they are not undead as per story, they are just infected people with a rage virus.

What about only at cemeteries? ..like the church ones. I sort of like that idea.. I mean its not quite Dayz, but it could fit. They could add more, actual cemeteries, to the map as well eventually. Make them dangerous as all hell :)

I would also love to see dead players rising up into zeds after being killed, rather than just lie there dead until clean-up script or restart. Would be nice feature.. but I understand if this is too much for Dayz with it being an "infected" type scenario. Maybe that stuff is best for the modding community once they can get their hands on this game.

Still, I don't know how plausible that would be, since they are not "dead" so I don't think either scenario - graveyard zombies or player post-mortem zombies... but yea mods will probably come that will alter that, though it wouldn't feel right fighting with myself to get my gear back..

I know you guys are trying to add respawning zombies, but just randomly spawning zombies around people doesn't help anyone. I've literally stood on the airfield, in the bushes, and dettered waves and waves of zombies one after another, all of them spawning randomly, some in plain sight. This is absurd to say the least and doesn't help us test the game nor you to figure out what to do next.

Shut up and get immersed

LOL, I hear you.. I happen to think that would be hilarious. You lose to yourself and end up on the coast again.... LOLZ

The new zombies are awesome, and responsible for my most intense and adrenaline pumping moments in the game yet.

Ok, maybe I should clarify, because I have yet to see a zombie spawn out of thin air. I was in a town, and got hit by a zombie. I saw another one approaching but it was of the slower kind so I thought I would have the time to bandage so I dropped my shotgun on the ground. However other zombies came running from behind houses and from inside a courtyard and attacked me so I had to run and find a different spot. And bandage again, because I started bleeding again. It took me four tries to get back to my shotgun and pick it up. Three of the times I started bleeding from zombie attacks. I eventually decided to try and shoot them with my revolver. That didn't make things any better though. I thought I was going to die several times. I managed to get out of there, with my shotgun.

So yes, I had an awesome time. I'm sorry you guys don't like being attacked by zombies in a zombie game. ;)

Um, perhaps we should clarify also?

Because no one said they don't like being attacked by zombies. No one.

I know. That's what the  ;) was for. But you are saying you don't like the zombies as they are currently.

The thing is:

- They're a placeholder (and I know you said you don't like placeholders as well).

- They're a test.

If the only thing you don't like about them is that they spawn in thin air (which I have yet to experience) then why not just wait until they fix that? They probably just want to test if this system is going to work before they spend time on fancy "stand up from prone, hidden in the grass" animations or trackers that check where your character is looking to spawn zombies behind you, or spawning them behind terrain so that zombies come stumbling out from behind a bush etc. It's wasted work if the system isn't working at all.

The title of the thread is a pretty irrelevant question. "Why do zombies spawn out of thin air?"

The obvious answer is "Because they're not finished. They're still being tested".

Of course they're not going to leave it as it is. So more constructive feedback would be to name the thread "Suggestions on how to make zombie spawning more immersive" and place it in the Suggestion forum.

You're posting a question with an obvious answer in General Discussion.

Can you now see how it comes off as "whiny"?

Its not my thread..

And about waiting to play until its fixed.. the thing is, as of now I can play fine. On stable. Its experimental that I have issues with. Mainly desync and secondly, the hacker zombies. I call them that because that is how they come across.. hacking. I know.. its a joke.

Stable is updating to exp. build this Wednesday. Which means I have a few days left before I am forced to deal with the immersion breaking, physics defying, magical zeds from BohemiaLand... Or RocketVille... maybe Deantown. I dunno.

I think it is part of a plan to keep losers from sitting in the same spot for hours so they can camp high traffic areas.

Wait, what? Robbing/ambushing is being a loser now? I thought that was called playing the game. And it doesn't prevent it, fyi.

Why would anyone bother camping popular loot spots when they can just patrol or camp the most obvious paths between them, without fear of zombies?

Right you are. It's not your thread. Let me correct that last part:

This thread is posing a question with an obvious answer in General Discussion.

Can you see how people might think it's a whining thread?

Except it's not a whining thread. I really want to know what kind of data devs are hoping to collect by having people deal with magical zombies.

If you are sitting on the coast camping fresh spawns, yes, you are a loser.

If you are hunting other players for fun and don't care about their loot, yes, you are a loser.

If you want to just sit and snipe people for shits n' giggles all day, there are games like Battlefield for that.
