So will there be missions?

Recommended Posts

Nope, it's a sandbox game.

I hope one day Day Z Standalone will be really fun, it is ok now, but it will and could be a lot better. I can't wait to see what it will be like in full-release.

It just needs more to do. Like, a lot more to do...

Once there is a lot more gear, so much that it would take weeks to find all the top-tier items, and things like temperature and sickness are implemented and functioning correctly; I think surviving will be a lot more challenging and rewarding.

Not to mention repairing and maintaining vehicles and base building in whatever form it takes.

So will there be easter egg type missions or what?

Make your own missions.

I hope there will never be missions :P

The game should be enough in its sandbox form.

foolishness. Having small easter egg type missions would not interfere with the gameplay for those who do not need them. They are OPTIONAL

It would add to the game, not take away from it. There is nothing wrong with this at all.

As it stands, sandbox or not, there are very few things you can do:

You either team up with other players and shoot zombies, or avoid other people and shoot zombies/people. This gets boring after a while, and is guaranteed to have the game de-evolve into PvP. Trust me.

On the other-hand, if easter-egg hunt missions are integrated, it gives players that want this, a purpose for being in the game.

You know, since I hear a lot about laboratories and research of a cure and things like that, I don't see why there wouldn't be little optional missions or meta games. Not talking about a GTA-style mission progression system... Just some optional tasks. I think (read: think) that the devs have plans for this.

I don't care a whole lot either way.

Missions that will be currently up coming:

Medic - Search for survivors and help out the less fortunate with medical supplies, mending broken arms/legs, curing diseases etc

Support - Search for survivors or team mates and make sure everyone has enough ammo to help them fend of bandits and infected

Hunter -  Hunt wild game to gather food provisions for yourself or to hand out to others

Bandit/Badguy - Prey on the weak and either kill or rob them(hopefully kidnapping will come in to play at some point)

Bandit Hunter/Goodguy - Protect the weak and innocent from bandits and infected

Mechanic - Fix and repair automobiles for yourself, friends or random players

If you are looking for missions such as go kill 10 infected and bring back 10 infected brains, this is the wrong game for you.

Also, those are just made up names for the mission types based on playstyle just to simplify it.

Lack of missions have no effect on if the game becomes PvP or not, there are always people who will be the "Interweb tough guy" and feel the need to run around being a douchebag and killing people.  You put missions in, and the people trying to do the same mission will kill each other trying to get the "goal" complete... there will ALWAYS be PvP regardless

If you think this is what I mean by 'missions' this is very short sighted of you.

I am not suggesting that anyone bring anything back.

On the otherhand, missions that allow the player to solve certain mysteries surrounding the overall lore of the game would be fun.

For example, player comes across a note hinting to a kid who left a note to their parents about where they fled to escape zombies.  Player follows the trail of bread crumbs and finally discovers the zombified corpse of the little girl, and puts it out of its misery... or not.

Or follows a trail of clues that reveal how the outbreak started.  Or even following clues that eventually lead to hidden loot.

These little mystery side missions will only add character to the game. They do not require that you 'bring' anything back to anyone.

I can only see people using 'missions' as a means of 'griefing' others - for example your idea of finding a little girl zombie & putting it out of it's 'misery'. Unless the location of the child zombie was randomised (which would require the mission structure to account for the random nature of where the zombie child would be), you'd have people camping where the zombie child would spawn to a. kill it and deny you your objective and b. to snipe you.

It would also require time and coding which I personally think would be far better spent on other things, such as new mechanics to improve the overall gameplay/survival aspect. Make your own missions & storyline.

The devs have already stated they'll be adding lore to the game. It may possibly take the form of things like this, but I wouldn't call them 'missions' and there will never be NPC's or quest givers or anything like that.

You got a negative response because you used the word missions, but what you've written above is already planned as far as I am aware.

For example, player comes across a note

that is created by another player, we'll assume it's not a troll note, telling you his story of events that have happened since the outbreak.  The beauty of this game being a sandbox.  Create and do your own missions.

I wouldn't mind events, such as crashed helicopters every now and then, not too often. Much like the mod, but more realistic, less often, and harder to spot.

As this game is a sandbox survival game, I don't think that there will be any missions, but I do think that I would kinda be a cool idea, like find patient zero and discover the truth behind the zombie outbreak.

As arrogant as this is it is about attracting the right type of player...

The kind of player that must have those in game is not right for a game like this. Anything added in the way of "quest" or "mission" objectives sort of pours cement in the sandbox.

Everybody is crying sandbox on all the popular game forurms these days but I really wonder if any of them have ever actually played one?

So will there be easter egg (s)...?

Apparently, this short series by Dolce & Battlefield 4 suggests that Dean put an Easter egg in DayZ. They discuss the possibility in one of the episodes--I forget which one. At first, I thought they'd just done a fine job of crafting a story for us.

Here's Episode 1 of 3: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RBwkWclVU-8

Yes. you are right. This is arrogant (which is not bad in and of itself, as I too am arrogant albeit in a supremely good way). However, this statement was also foolish, and this makes it a bad thing.

The aim of this game is not to isolate anyone (except for those stupid knuckle dragging COD fanboys). The quests/missions I have in mind do not involve NPC's delivering them. However, if you do not want to take up these side story quests, then you simply have to ignore them. 10 to 1 says you wouldn't tho.

Don't want missions but server scripted events would be nice. Weapons drops or heli crashes in the mod were superb things. The initial rush at seeing it happen, to the paranoia of you approaching the goodies, then the panic as you get the gear and realise you are a sitting duck to the final joys of camping the site to catch out those who came late. Excellent stuff.

There are already community-created missions going on.  Players are making them up and posting about them in the forums.
