The Anti-Game - Why DayZ will stay a crappy game

Recommended Posts

There is so much you can implement:

- fortresses with human gatherings

- hunting

- vehicles

- maybe even special zombies

- wanted posters

- and so on

I really hope for something like that but until then we all just have to sit and wait...

Nothing of that will change the core. If you'd want to make that game really work, you'd have to change the core of it dramatically. Either to some coop game or more towards shooter. Right now it's bad in both departments. But if you change the core, it won't be a survival simulator anymore. It won't be what Dean had in mind.

I have lots of fun playing it, the experience is it's own reward, if you can't find the fun in the game and need some more main stream mechanics to make the game fun then there are literaly thousands of other games that you can play instead.  I get what you are saying, the game on paper shouldn't be fun, but that isn't the reality that we experience.  Players are always looking for a more hardcore experience, I take games such as Arma, S.t.a.l.k.e.r. and Dark Souls as an example.  Yes it is a niche market but it is a big one and a constantly growing one.  Maybe the problem is that you don't like the game and that is fine, there are other games you can play.  But saying it is a crappy game and it will always be a crappy game is unfair because lots of us are enjoying it even in this barebone alpha phase.  If they keep the current direction it will only get better for us, not for you and that is just the way the bread is buttered my friend.  Also saying the premise of the game is flawed is clearly wrong because it is the premise of the game that attracted us in the first place.

@tommes: Are you drunk?  So you did understand that DayZ doesn't want to be neither a coop game nor a shooter, and you tried it and didn't like it because it "Doesn't really work" (for you). And instead of moving on to something else, you came here to....what? Cry in front of us all?

*lol* I read WinowLickers answer and once again we are on the same page but he is so much more polite than me, so I think to myself "If  I were into clichés I'd say he is Canadian."

You are ignorant, the mod was fully formed and it never evolved past LOL LETS KILL FOR LAWLZ...the game was never taken seriously as a survival sim, cause it relied way too heavily on people treating it as such instead of the game creating parameters, when you make a virtual playground with guns...of course the only thing people will do is run around and shoot and be dicks...people are ass holes when there is no consequence or true risk involved.

There are missing parameters because they haven't been fully developed. God, people these days.

I love this thread, this is how I imagine it:

Yeah, a whole lot of opinions going around here. Reminds me of the cluster fuck several days back when Dean said that he was leaving Bohemia at the end of 2014, once he was no longer critical to the development.

DayZ is not like other games, you gotta find your own purpose for surviving the zompocalypse.

You won't find one. You'll have to make it yourself. Then you will have to get past the other players with your plans. Meanwhile you've spent a couple of hours to just even get to the point where making plans is an option...

Only thing that could save the game would be adding of skills and skill trees. Permanent ones. That adds goals for players to actually invest time in this

This is your solution to everything, isn't it?

--

But, OP, whether or not DayZ is a crappy game is your opinion. So...

How about you write down the story of your next life down on paper. Report wise it won't be more than half a page. Spawned. Ran around. Looted this. Looted that. Got a gun. Shot some sucker. Got shot by his friend. Rinse. Repeat. Cool story, bro.

Imagination is key.

Some of you need to calm down and stop being so aggressive.

Arma games were made to appeal to a SPECIFIC audience and they got by fine

DAYZ is the same, I played the mod for a year and a half and now play the standalone and im always having fun

Just because your not having fun doesn't mean others don't enjoy it

I understand, but maybe the post should be titled why DayZ isn't for me, the fun that I get out of it, currently is can I survive, I spawn in often late and on a full server the coast is literally empty, I've heard all the stories about players starving to death I'm scrounging heading to all the little towns that are out of the way looking for something.  Sometimes I've been lucky with this and I've gotten geared up other times I've been scrounging berries just to stay alive (now that's not fun) but I've done it I've survived where other can't.

Every time I encounter another player I wonder about how to approach the situation. Some I've been shot, some I've killed, some I've made a group and some I've walked away from.

Watching the game evolve is in it's own right something I enjoy, there is plenty of things to look forward too for myself anyway, I'm not sure what you expected are you mad because you died? I've died too you know lot's several from glitches some from bad judgment and some carelessness.

If the KoS mentality bother's you then why not join a group? I avoid KoS by not being seen, can I be sneakier then the sniper? some situations I've managed to talk my way out of. To me the freedom and mass murder that carries on is a challenge, being able to discern dodgy behavior, phrases and the tremor in their voice are they afraid of me, thinking I'm going to kill them or are they planning to kill me?

I enjoy they way this game plays out sometime I don't have a chance, sometimes I make a bad decision.

Finally if your so upset and angry at this game why are you posting here? are you looking for validation on your view's so you can leave the community with a bang of yeah I'm right, guess what next week someone is going to post here a similar thing before they leave and we still won't care.

Don't let the door hit you on the way out.

Surviving is easy once you figured out the mechanics. Don't stay at the coast. Go inland. Wait for server restart. Go low pop servers and everything is served on a platter. No challenge there. Just a lot of time taken by running around an empty landscape. That bores the hell outta me. I deliberatly joined high pop servers. Experimental and hardcore. The amount of fun compared to the time invested is poor at best.

I'm not angry. I don't really plan on leaving. I just had some thoughts lurking in the back of my mind and the session today made them pop out.

If you still get excited about DayZ you're in this early phase of a relationship, where everything is new and exciting, but I've done the mother often enough to see behind the mascara. Those scars can't be fixed. You just don't see em yet. Have fun while it lasts!

I've been alive now for about 150 hours I could write a damn good novel from the material of it a lone and it's still early dayZ  geddit? eh.. if you don't like it don't play it, i'm loving it though so..

I don't agree with OP. It is - of course - his opinion; but it feels like he has a pretty "traditional" game experience.

A few current titles and many titles in the future (not the casual one) have the focus to let the consumer see the bigger picture. It's like the modern art - but back in the 20th century.

While "traditional" games give you constant success or let you achieve different milestone to keep you up in mood - games like DayZ are not comparable with these titles. I'm actually too lazy to explain what I mean :D

I was completely off gaming for more than a year because everything "traditional" out there just sucked imo. DayZ made me buy a new machine and enjoying something new for a while. But know the magic is lost...or it's just too much nothing inbetween the shows. In retrospect, the magic was always spoiled by a lot of cheap bullshit. DayZ always was full of flaws. It always were the few special moments making you forget about the hours of boredom.

My only gripe with the standalone is the server hopping.  Players going from low pop to low pop to get the best shit and then join a high pop and pretend they are uber leet players that worked so hard to get their easy mode gear.

DayZ is a game.

A game is supposed to make fun.

Fun is the human minds response to a certain type of action, like success.

Success is achieving your goals.

You spawn. You run. You find nothing a lot. Then you find something. This goes on for like one to three hours. That part is mildly satisfying because finding stuff gives you a feeling of success.

Sometimes you meet someone and succesfully establish some interaction, which can be at least interesting.

Often enough you're cut off from fun right there, mostly because the other dude does not want to interact with you much for some reason. You either fight to the death in shitty melee combat or part your ways without further adoo. Both versions are rather not fun.

Games are sometimes for a challenge, and the reward of surviving for however long is enough for some people, for you its not apparently.

and as to your remark about how you find nothing for almost 3 hours except a shitty melee weapon,

GET OFF THE COAST,GET OFF FULL 40/40 SERVERS, STOP CHECKING BAD HOUSES.

But then don't you hardcore gamers promote exploration and that "true" DayZ experience is in 40/40 servers?

Looks like the true DayZ experience is broken..

Well OP, thats you opinion and I for one completely disagree with it.

Again, this game has been in pre-alpha for less than 3 months and people expect so much it's ridiculous.

This is what is says on the Steam page before you pay for it:

WARNING: THIS GAME IS EARLY ACCESS ALPHA. PLEASE DO NOT PURCHASE IT UNLESS YOU WANT TO ACTIVELY SUPPORT DEVELOPMENT OF THE GAME AND ARE PREPARED TO HANDLE WITH SERIOUS ISSUES AND POSSIBLE INTERRUPTIONS OF GAME FUNCTIONING.

Pretty fucking clear to me.

...and heres what it says every time you play the game:

Thank you for participating in the DayZ Early
Access! This game is in Alpha, and will be for
sometime. This, means you will experience bugs,
unfinished features, problematic design decision, and
many more things that disrupt your game
experience. We will be working with the
community to fix these, to help us please visit
dayzgame.com for developmental information.

Above all, please remember this game is not
finished, and is a work in progress.

It doesn't get any clearer than that.
You people refuse to understand what an unfinished game in alpha testing is.
If you buy the game now, you are paying to test the game. Period!
Not to have fun. If you have fun great, but the game is far from done and to expect more than what you are getting after 2 1/2 months of early access alpha testing is fucking childish and really doesn't make any sense.
How can you people not understand this, and keep expecting a fully functional game every time you click away the warning each time you play it?

I feel bad for Dean and all the hard work he and Bohemia are putting into this game, and all you can do is bitch and moan over what should be expected from an unfinished game that has been out for less than 3 months in early access alpha stage.
Yes I keep repeating myself, because you people don't seem to get it.

It's like explaining music to a deaf person or colors to a blind man. You'll just never get it.

As mentioned in the last Q&A stream (26.02)

No ETA on respawning loot, but it is being worked on; only ETA that can be given: Soon.

And as mentioned on reddit, the 0.37 version (with respawning Zs) will go to stable this Wednesday (if nothing major happens)

Well I'm dropping the two cents that I have grouped with random players and we had a good time feels nice having someone to watch your back, if your having trouble meeting people in game why not find some outside the game and play with them

I've not been keeping too close of an eye on this thread reading it every now and then, but the "concept being fundamentally flawed" has popped up several times, this seems to be the magic shield that everyone who's criticizing is hiding behind, Dean said that and now it's your go to straw man.  The thing your missing is everything is flawed if there was a flawless, truly flawless, game then everyone would play that and we wouldn't be here.  Your entitled to your opinion and all that but I don't recall ever eating olives and thinking that shit is disgusting I've gotta get me some more of that, no it's that shit is disgusting, never again.

If you don't enjoy something then why do it, if you truly believe this game is ruined then why are you playing there is no reason for you to be here stirring the pot. Why are you being a troll?

Yeah, Dean realized it too. DayZ will never be what he had in mind. And it will never be nearly as great as everyone imagines it to be after full release. It can't. You'll still run around for even less scraps for hours just to meet some guy who doesn't want to interact with or will just want to kill you. That core aspect won't change. There'll be only more fancy shit around to cover that.

I was playing SA now for like 30 hours. I'll gave it a try. I'll found the few fun moments don't outweigh the long periods of boredom. And if you listened to where DayZ is heading, it will rather be more of that boredom circle and less of the firefighting part I enjoy much more. You might enjoy that. A lot of people enjoy games I'd not touch but Candy Crush offers more excitement than DayZ...and it's fucking unforgiving. I'm level 525 now.  Even Flappy Bird has a much higher level of density. 5 minutes Flappy Bird equals 15 hours of DayZ in terms having ecxitement.

I'm not trolling. I just give you my opinion. Why are you reading it? Didn't invite you. It's an early alpha opinion so don't give me shit for it even if it's fundamentally flawed!

Fun? If I wanted fun, I'd be back in nullsec wormhole mining while some Estars trying to smart bomb me out of the black for his youtube montage. Fun means little Johnny wouldn't of been podded three seconds out of his frigate because he didn't train drones enough to specialize scouts. Now Johnny's got no legs, stuck flying a scooter.

Sorry, to much Eve Online.....

No gonna read all of this... but just for the record, I don't at all think Rocket meant anything like what OP is ranting about when threw out that fundamentally flawed comment. Pretty sure the comment didn't concern the lack of hearty amusement for casual kittens in the game.

Playing DayZ is as good an investement as investing time with games goes. (Not necessarily saying much.) But playing an alpha when not realizing its an alpha probably is not.
