Clarification Regarding Linux Client

Recommended Posts

So I would really like to see a "blue" post on the matter most of all for the clarification on whether or not DayZ will see a Linux Client/Server (I heard yes for the server but I'm more interested in a Client TBH)

As most of us know since DayZ is purchased via Steam, SteamOS is now Beta and moving along quite fast and is getting quite a lot acomplished.

A quote from a recent news article regarding Linux and steam games

To be successful, SteamOS and Steam Machines need games. At this year's LinuxCon, Gabe Newell did something unusual: he gave a presentation slide to SDL (Simple Direct MediaLayer, created by Sam Lantinga), a low-level cross-platform abstraction layer that end users never see. To developers like me, this is interesting because Valve is putting its full resources behind SDL to make Linux both a good platform for games and an easy platform to port games to. Experienced cross-platform game developers know that SDL is one of the best cross-platform foundational layers around. If a game is cross-platform, there's an excellent chance it uses SDL in some manner. (Disclaimer: I have had the privilege of being a contributor to SDL.)

Newell also announced that Valve is working on a Linux debugger, because that's the most requested developer tool. This again shows Valve's commitment to its platform. (In contrast, the Android NDK completely falls down here, but I'll get to that later.)

In addition, other PC game companies may find SteamOS and Steam Machines appealing if Valve can succeed in eliminating the problems many Windows users have with drivers and incompatible hardware. If Valve can attract companies such as Blizzard (best known for World of Warcraft, Starcraft, and Diablo), SteamOS/Steam Machines has a real shot of succeeding.

Valve was able to use its clout to get video card manufacturers such as Nvidia to fix their drivers to work well on Linux. (This is in stark contrast to Linux creator Linus Torvalds's expletive-laden dismissal of Nvidia, only a year ago, for their terrible drivers and lack of cooperation.)

SteamOS Beta is the first public release of our Linux-based operating system. The base system draws from Debian 7, code named Debian Wheezy.

Please DayZ make a working Native Linux Client and Server :)

Again I would really like to see a "blue" post regarding the matter

Blue post just means from a developer/mod etc

No. It would be a too big effort to switch drom DirectX to OpenGL. Major parts of the rendering engine would need to completely rewritten. So it wont happen (please note that i also would love a linux version).

I'm pretty sure that's what the SDL (Simple Direct MediaLayer, created by Sam Lantinga), a low-level cross-platform abstraction layer is being developed for.

It's just this is getting insane the shear amount of garbage Windows and such are becoming. They in themselves are becoming spyware along with the new model Cisco Linksys could routers... they will literally brick your router if you break there terms LOL...

I'm growing tired of the forced control these companies are putting on us and I'm ever so close to saying enough I'm no longer supporting your corruption, I mean at least Google's using the revenue from ad's to move us to a new age of technology and life where Microsoft is just doing it to know everything about us and force feed us what they want how they want.

Has anyone used Wine to play DayZ and if so how does it react?

Rocket wants to, if it happens though it likely won't be for a long time.

Q: Can we expect a Linux version of DayZ?

A: I really hope we can. We will be splitting the renderer out. But it won't be priority number 1. I just hope we can do that as part of everything else.

They plan to entirely replace the renderer at some point so that they are not reliant on DX. (Some aspects are based on DX7) At the moment it's closely bound to simulation so it's going to be difficult to change. So they need to split it all out so the core engine can have its renderer changed easily. This makes it easier, say to clip in openGL, etc... Its something a programmer will be devoted onto for a long time, branched off, with a horrendous merge at some point in the future.

That's exactly what I wanted to hear minus the time-frame but It's worth the wait esp if I can play decent with wine currently still waiting for a response to that though.

and REALLY DX7...................... that explains a lot... no really.

when this comes to fruition it'll be amazing :) OpenGL has made some very impressive advancements as of late.

Hate double posting but I just read this on BattlEyes website

The BattlEye Anti-Cheat Engine will support the upcoming release of Urban Terror v4.0 (standalone) with its powerful capabilities.

Urban Terror will be the first game to use the BE Client on Linux as well. In addition, this marks the fundamental change of the BattlEye system: BattlEye will no longer require a central master server but use the separate BE Server module directly integrated into the game server.

The game will be released shortly. And that's no April's fool! Check www.urbanterror.net for more information.

So that means they have a BattlEye Linux client just need to update it I would assume correct?
