What are you doing to have 700 ping? Is your local network alright?

Zeppa 562 Posted February 25, 2014 (edited) Not really, thats an awfull connection you got there... you and anyone you meet will get annoyed as you warp around. You get annoyed because there will be constant delay between your commands and the tasks. Mullraugh 1151 Posted February 25, 2014 doesn't... everyone get their internet from satellites?
Korsbaek 1778 Posted February 25, 2014 doesn't... everyone get their internet from satellites? Not the way he does. I don't know how it works, just that there are some different kinds of satellite networks...
dulix11 731 Posted February 25, 2014 I think, with broadband and wireless broadband, the signal goes from the router to the exchange, and then the exchange to the satellite, but with satellite internet, it just goes straight up.
enforcer1975 1111 Posted February 25, 2014 Up to 150ms is bearable for a in Europe connection if you want to connect from the west coast to Moscow. Anything beyond 200ms is pulling down on server performance and not really enjoyable.

The best servers for me are the UK and German ones which offer around 130 ping, these are fine for me. The rest of Europe offers around 150 ping which is playable but I really wouldn't like to go any higher than that. Edited February 25, 2014 by Mos1ey
TD808 71 Posted February 25, 2014 (edited) doesn't... everyone get their internet from satellites? There is a network of fibre optic cables laid under the ocean that connect landmasses. Satellite broadband is just for people who are outside of the telephone broadband or cable network. Edited February 25, 2014 by TD808
enforcer1975 1111 Posted February 25, 2014 Maybe he lives in such a place. A buddy of mine lived in a town in the forest of odes and had a really bad connection. The provider had to pump up the power what was currently available at the hub so he had 1/2MBit at home. He needed two of those so he could use teamspeak one one and play on the other. By now they have about 6MBit+ or so i guess but he moved away anyway.
woots 82 Posted February 25, 2014 (edited) What part of Canada do you live? Do you have any other options? I live in a rural area where a 6 or 7 years back the only options were 56k or satelite. My cousin had the Satelite connection and pinged about 200-300 ms pinging on speedtest to Seattle Now I moved here and they have some sort of long distance Wireless that you pick up with a certain type of antenna. I get crap download speeds but I get decent ping. Edited February 25, 2014 by WooTs
deebz1234 243 Posted February 26, 2014 ya that satellite stuff is scary. satellite generally only offers download @ reasonable speeds, but the upload is a separate connection i believe. So you use satellite for down and 56k or isdn for UP. (if i recall correctly) however the down speed is generally pretty quick OP I wouldnt suggest it for SA at the moment. If you want to test, try googling Arma Free and DayZ mod. you can cobble something together and test it in the cheapest way possible, but a 700 ping is just scary

mosibfu 71 Posted February 27, 2014 (edited) Satellite is not meant for gaming, you get at least 150 ping to any server.why?a mid orbit satellite is around 20.000.000 meter above the earth.the speed of light is slightly under 300.000.000 meter per second.so just sending a signal to a satellite, in the best conditions, will take 0.06 seconds, or 60ms, (ping)then the signal has to get back down to earth.. add another 60msthen have some hops on the wired network towards a server.. add 10/20ms since you hardly ever have a satellite directly overhead, the sending signals to the satellite will probably take longer then the 60ms, and same goes for the signal from the satellite back to earth. I would not recommend satellite internet for anyone that wants to play interactive content unless they can live with the fact that they are dead on my screen for half a second, before they even know im there on their screen. satellite will bring internet to everywhere, but with these latency's, i would not suggest satellite connection for multiplayer games Edited February 27, 2014 by mosibfu
