Where am I?

Recommended Posts

Is there a way to give yourself a general idea of where you are on the map? Whether its using some in-game coordinates or some other method. It was nighttime and I must have wandered around woods and open fields for over an hour and barely found more than a few old shacks and rotten fruit, until mercifully I died of starvation. When I press the map button I'm brought to a completely black screen, so there must be some map out there, but I sure haven't located anything. Any tips for a newbie?

Play some more. In daytime. With practice you will learn the basic layout of the map. Or check out the DayZ database map and consult the road signs to figure out where you are.

Well I have tried using some road signs on occasion but can never seem to locate any of the names on the maps. It doesn't help that in general I have a horrible sense of direction. I'm just amazed by how huge the map is in this game.

There are several ways to get your bearings.

If you know what time it is on the server, you can tell your bearing by the sun (It's in the west in the morning, and the east in the evening). You can also navigate by the stars if you teach yourself how to find North.

You're right that there's a map, but it's in several pieces, and you have to find them. Hope this helps.

Practice makes perfect. You will either get the hang of it or stop playing due to frustration. This is no your average CoD or BF game whith 1km² battlefields. It's about reading the environment and knowing your general heading, if you can't master those basics you will never suceed. Everyone started this way even me, the map is not something you know in a 5 min. tutorial you need a couple of days or weeks on foot, by car and maybe by aircraft to know every nook and cranny.

Learn the map: http://dayzdb.com/map. Learn the general locale of the spawn points. Learn to determine direction from the enviroment: http://forums.dayzgame.com/index.php?/topic/170905-navigation-guide-common-spwans-cardinal-directions-map-reading/?hl=navigation. Get in game and move around the map. Nothing beats being on the ground and familiarising yourself with the terrain.

The rest comes with experience...

One small tip is when you spawn or happen to be by the coast, when the ocean is on your left side you are probably heading west/southwest. If the ocean is on the right side you are heading east/northeast.

Get a compass as It will help you immensely when traveling.

If your ever lost look for roads or follow power lines as they will always lead you to signs.

Like someone else said the best way to navigate is to memorize the dayzdb map and remember the names of cities off of that map.

A compass is very much your friend and you can generally find one in most of the larger towns. I've found them in all sorts of places that spawn loot so make sure you search everywhere.

Once you have a compass you can find North and after that everything is gravy. Landmarks will tell you which town you're in - for example Elektro and Cherno both have coastal industrial areas with a single inlet marina. Berezino has a larger multi harbour marina and also a long promenade down the middle of the city, with tank statues (a harsh killzone, so be careful in there).

Once you know roughly where you are along the coast, your compass (or your directional sense if you're good at reading the environment) can tell you which way to head to get inland to some of the other villages and cities. The main roads will have signs on them at almost every intersection and once you've been to places a few times, you'll learn to recognise the names even though they're in a completely different language. Do not walk on the main roads however. Stay off to the side and follow the lay of the road through the land. Walking on the road is asking for someone to rob you blind or murder you.

Walk softly, and carry a big gun. Good luck out there.

Yeah, do what these three did and kick the fucking thing in a stream. It's useless.
