What do a mute person do?

Recommended Posts

Here is an idea, Missy:

Use a soundboard.

Good luck, and don't give up on the game because you bumped into one asshole. :)

One? You think i bumped in to just one? hehe

And yeah, i am thinking about it, but it just seem to be so much work for a game.

Or you can become the mysterious silent survivor! Knock people out with a shot, bandage them, loot them and sneak away before they wake up.

Let's hope they fix the suppressor bug soon.

That would be so cool. The dampened "thud" from a suppressed .45, screen goes black. Then I wake up and my can opener is missing.

Hell, you're welcome to rob me any time. :)

Guess that is what i have been reduced to, a lone hermit in the woods only coming out at night to look for a bite to eat, as everyone seem to be out to kill the likes me lol! :D

Why don't you get one of those Stephen Hawking talkbox things?

You should also use the pen and paper in game to write a note and leave in their inventory instead of the stolen item, saying "You have been robbed by the "Silent Survivor", or something like that.

You are right, I do not fully know how it works but thanks for proving that even a person who cannot speak can be an asshole.   ;)

I'll add my input

I think it will be a challenge, so the best thing to do is join a friendly clan

There are a number of friendlies recruiting, the CQF might be a good choice for you as they are a decent bunch of guys and also run pretty large groups of 15-20 when running operations, they deal in mostly survivor rescue, assistance and anti bandit operations

What I'm thinking is that as a part of a large group like that you also won't have to constantly talk so it might make it easier without having to worry about saying too much but still have some people watching your back

Hope that helps

Yeah i am part of a group of people now, can call it a clan if you like. But as i have said, we are not always all one at the same time, but you are right when you say it is easyer. I can just make up the back of the troop and let the guys do all the talking etc :D

I was not trying to be an asshole, but i do expect people to know what they are talking about when making a suggestion like that. I can tell you that Stephen Hawking uses his eyes to control the computer, and it is very slow.

MissyX,

Michael "handi" Olson is a CS:GO player without arms. And he still plays like a pro.

I hope that inspires you and shows you how humans work when they really want to do something that nature disrupts.

Came into this thread a little late but glad to see you found some people who understand. It's a shame there's no text-only setting that the server could enforce to level the playing field for everyone.

Well, I don't think the game needs leveling. It's not like Missy can't play it just as good as anyone else. She just needs to play it slightly differently.

I never said that. As it would be per server I really fail to see your issue with it, what's wrong in allowing a deaf server admin to force everybody to use text? If you don't like it, don't play there, it's not like they'd ever make up the majority of servers available.

I think you missed my point.

There is really no point in making special servers for deaf people since there are plenty of computer programs that aid deaf people. Voice-to-text overlays and such.

The ideal is not to create a special millieu for people with a disability, because that results in segregation. And that's something I'd have a problem with.

I'm not going to discuss this any further with you. There's really no use.

I have no mic (But not mute) and I have met friendly players about 10 times in 77 hours.

And I usually shoot first or avoid people. The friendly player list doesn't include the people who killed me when I talked to them though.

Best one was when I got myself a very talkative guy with a mic when we both had nothing. I went to the surrender position and talked to him. Then after leaving pavlovo we split up to loot another town, I had to go for a while and when I logged back in I met an armed guy who I also surrendered to and he walked right past me. But that's experimental for you, they probably trusted me because they don't have permanent characters. I even had a baseball bat in my backpack all that time.

On the subject of a soundboard or prerecorded sayings you could play it up for laughs. Not that the situation itself is funny, but instead of explaining it or hoping that people won't ask why you keep repeating the same lines just go completely absurd with it. Play some Darth Vader sound clips, some robot sound clips, Wilhelmina screams, just whatever it takes to get them interested and laughing.

If you entertain them enough they won't want you to die. You could still communicate the basic yes/no/ " on your left"/ die mother f'r/ etc. through comedic or pop culture clips. Just have one or two for each, since if you're sneaking up on some bandits you don't want some loud booming Darth Vader voice.... But yeah like you said that's a lot of work just for a game.

Not really, no. I'm sick and tired of obsolete "feeling sorry for the disabled" views and have a pretty strong opinion on the matter, so in case you disagree with my opinion it's probably just better to agree to disagree.

I'd recommend you to read a little about "Crip-theory", although I doubt you'd take any recommendations from me.

I do not want this tread to turn out as a garbage dump for trolls and people not being able to have a adult discussion about a topic! :)

I am going to say tho, i know i represent a minority here, but i wish that all social media would have people like me and others in mind when they develop something. Just take DayZ in its current state as a example, i am a prime target because i can not fluidly speak to someone in the game and explain that i am mute. Ofc i can use a soundboard and other things, but that is not really a fluid forum for communication, besides i can only bind so many keys on my keyboard, and have someone do so many recordings for me. Do people honestly think it is fair that me as a mute have to go trough all that just to have a chance to play the game without being shot every 10min by someone because i can't talk?

And writing things in the chat is okei, but as the other topic clearly shows, people who type things in chat instead of talking will be shot on the spot. Don't anyone of you think that is a bit harsh? It don't make you for even a sec sit back and think "maybe this is not the way to go about this?"

Most people who respond do so in disbelief and reply in rude remarks about being a pretender, retard and what not, so i ask my self why is it so hard to believe that someone like me and many others play games? Do people really think it is all that fun running around pretending to be mute for a giggle? And is that something many people do in DayZ?

If i was going to recommend a game to some of my mute friends, this game is not it. After 10 days trying to find people to interact with i have not found any that was even willing to believe me, not only being female but also mute. And because most of my mute friends happens to be females i don't think this is the game for them

Well, I think the problem is that you are female AND mute. You probably wouldn't have as many problems if you were a guy. You would still have to deal with people shooting you for not talking but you wouldn't have people questioning whether or not you are actually mute.  I guess a lot of people still haven't gotten past the idea that there are now A LOT of female gamers out there so they still have the old "this person is really a dood" mentality.  But to be fair, there ARE some people out there who do that for whatever reason. Back when we first started Estrogen, we had a couple of guys who hated us and managed to join our clan by saying they were female gamers and didn't have mics. After they caused some drama we had to create a new "Everyone must have Ventrillo and a mic" rule. We didn't want to do it but we didn't have a choice unless we wanted to get trolled again. We haven't ever had a mute person want to join us so I'm not really sure how we would handle that type of situation. But anyway, my advice is not to let those people bother you and find a group to play with who can speak for you.

Hey, you're welcome to join up with me when I'm on... I usually play with my boyfriend and another friend. If someone has something to say to you, i'd be happy to taunt them on your behalf right before I put a sniper bullet through their head.  :o
